  1. I tried to walk them in at 300 - only the wind gusted 10-35 as I shot so the correction was never right. Seems like no matter how far I held off to the right, it hit a half-target left. I am pretty slow, and except for when I made a horrible mistake in planning and execution, only came close to timing out a couple times and that was "bang-beeeep". There were some first-match-ever shooters who timed out alot. While we welcome them, a big match is a tough place for a new shooter.
  2. All bays and the rifle range are being used for stages, so do not count on being able to check zero. There is an outside possibility we can break someone free, but the last minute stuff will keep the staff busy. We cannot discriminate - if sight-in is available for one it has to be for all. Lee
  3. http://texasmultigun.com/tmg/Docs/2011%20Texas%20Multigun%20Championship%20Stage%20Descriptions%20v1.pdf That link might not work if the stages change, so you might go for the match page and click on the stage descriptions link. Lee
  4. Looked like Mardi Gras beads, to me. Being originally from New Orleans, seen them before. Good time for a reminder to closely adhere to the 55 mph speed limit through Liberty Hill. They are VERY picky about that.
  5. Sheldon got the email with the request, so its done. Scoring - will be a local variant of stage points, not cumulative time. Calculated like stage points elsewhere, except points on each stage based on number of targets on that stage. Thanks, Mike.
  6. Didn't DPMS change their receiver rail height? Something annoyingly small but significant? Front sight not the issue but rear, maybe. DPMS Forum topic Lee
  7. The range might be able to accept shipments. However, if Sheldon doesn't already have something arranged for out to towners shipping ammo send me a PM and i will forward my Commercial Office address for you to ship too. I will be an RO so i will be around. If tthere is a shipping address already arranged I would prefer you use that. Well, its kindof late, but there is no prearranged address to ship ammo. One possibility is to ship to your hotel. Usually they will accept packages for guests, but call first. The range will be closed, or at least, no one will be at the office to guarantee delivery. Lee
  8. Try GT! GT Distributors I believe they are a match sponsor as well! Kyle GT is conveniently not far off 183. If I needed to buy buckshot or slugs or handgun or rifle ammo or a Glock or an M&P or an AR or a holster, or, well, lots of stuff, GT is at the top of the list. But birdshot? Call first. If you stop by GT then there is Dick's close by, too.
  9. Steel jacketed ammo is steel jacket with a lead core, and it is not armor piercing. In fact, lots of steel targets get shot with it to no immediate effect. I shot lots of matches with steel targets and saw lots of Wolf and Bear cases on the ground, and no holes or pockmarks on the targets. Now, that was a particular set of steel, and it is plausible that the targets are worn out faster, but there was no visible damage. Change that to US M855 or any NATO with SS109 bullets, and the targets get damage. By the way, lots of US 7.62x51 is copper washed steel jacket. And pretty much all the USGI M2 ball (30-06) has steel jacket. So if you buy "cheap" 30 cal surplus bullets, be sure they do not attract a magnet. Far from armor piercing, but get you DQ'ed. Lee
  10. Academy has 2 locations on US183. They carry STS, but they will also have a selection of 12 ga birdshot around $6.50/25 in case they do not have your exact flavor. The 2nd one, Cedar Park location (1104 C-Bar Ranch Trail,Cedar Park,TX,78613) is a little easier to get to, if you are going airport->range, but if there is something special you want, stop at both. Lee
  11. Shooter at a match recently had PMC Bronze 223 not ignite. He got it from a guy who also had trouble with it ("Woohoo! Free ammo!" Oops ). What looked like a problem with one gun is probably a problem with recent ammo. I have shot 1000's of PMC Bronze, but I am just finishing an old hoard, and I probably will not buy more until I see someone else take the plunge. Some isolated posts on ar15.com agree. Right now for 223, I am using Silver Bear for up close (<100 yds) and Prvi Partisan 75gr for far, although I did break out a stash of Black Hills 68gr blue box (reman) and that groups better than the PPU. POI to 100 yds are not that different. Looking at dusting off the 223 dies to make "good" ammo, but it is not worth my time to reload the hoser ammo for what I can get Silver Bear, or even XM193. I hate hosing with expensive ammo at paper 5 yds away. As was said, some matches do not care that the Silver Bear is steel jacket, not steel core, and ban it and anything that attracts a magnet. Lee
  12. What hotel/motels look good? I stayed someplace before, but I am open to suggestion. There is the complex with HI Express, Hampton, Comfort, and Fairfield on I-35, exit 141. There or elsewhere? Lee
  13. The Wilderness. Basically just push the mag in and friction holds it. I wish Blade Tech made a DPMS-ish mag holder, I like that system better. Lee
  14. Wow, there are some big names pretty far down on that list. It will be interesting to hear more stories about the match. Looks like some have 3 stages left, some have 2, so the ones with 3 left are short some points.
  15. First, the technology has advanced and they will survive lots of rounds. My only experience RO-ing a suppressed gun was not a good one for the RO. The timer barely picked up the sound and I had to get close. When the shooter stuck the muzzle through a port, no shots were picked up. Not a USPSA match, but still tricky. I bumped into the shooter trying to get the timer where it would trigger, so he got a reshoot. Still not sure if all the shots registered. Hard to hold the timer where it picks up shots, watch the display, and the shooter. BTW - it was a night match. If allowed a vote, I would say "no suppressors because the timer might not pick it up". Lee
  16. As of this writing, it is time+penalties=score, lowest wins. However, it is under discussion to use stage points.
  17. Probably no reason except SMM 3-Gun says the same thing. I will poke the MD. Need to talk to him anyway. Also, I am not sure it is a good assumption that we will be able to drive from stage to stage. Most of the bays are pretty close together, and there will be basically 2 squads at every bay. The traffic jam would be epic. Lee
  18. Best case is about 45 minutes (I drive by the airport going home from Liberty Hill), if you take the 183A toll road (tolls are not much but there is no cash lane on that stretch - either you have an electronic tag or they mail you a bill - check with the rental company if you rent a car). Otherwise an hour, on Sunday evening. Add in car return, bag checkin (with guns), etc. Alternate route would be US183A-SH45-SH130-SH71 (all toll except 71), and this would be better Monday AM. Lee
  19. AUS (Austin Bergstrom) for airline, Georgetown for private, in case you have your own plane. San Antonio...well, maybe AlamoShooter is offering to run a bus, but San Antonio is a but farther. Lee
  20. Well, they were plates at the monthly matches, not paper. But be careful, he-who-rules-the-stage-design may read this and get the last laugh. Per the posted rules (you may need to clear your browser cache to get the right doc), there is nothing regarding slings. However, no slings are required, neither rifle nor shotgun. In fact, a sling may get in the way more than help. The Texas Multigun site got a new look so check there for more info, like the Match Squad Schedule. Lee
  21. Normally our Texas Multigun 3 gun match is scheduled for the 3rd Sundays of the month, for March we are scheduling it to Saturday, March 19th. Expect 5 to 6 multigun stages with approximate round counts of 100 rifle, 75 pistol, and 40 birdshot (5 slugs). Long shots as usual. More to come. Match Location: Best of the West Lee
