  1. Absolutely and I have yet to see anyone with a gun to their head at ANY shooting competition I have been too. If you dont like the basic rules of the game, dont play. I shoot everything I can afford the time and money for and I like it all. I like some more than others and they generally see me way more at those events than at the ones that I just dont like. Larry P
  2. My 1911 9mm is my favorite gun to shoot. I like it the best, I think I am faster and smoother with both the Glocks and the 45 1911 (I actually proved I shoot a 45 faster and more accurately a couple years ago shooting the same stage a # of times with 9mm PF loads compared to 45 hardball) The recoil impulse used to give me problems with the 9mm, its very different (TO ME) from a 45 even with Full power ammo. Thats about the best discription I can give. Its very different. The gun has been down for a while and I have been shooting a Glock so I dont know how I would do now that I am USED to shooting a 9mm. Mine is a S/A and its plenty accurate, I think it will outshoot me at any give time. I never could get it to group worth a crap but right before the Nats in 2002 I shot a drill with a friend at 25 yds IIRC. Concealed Draw shoot a index card in 2.5 seconds 10 times in a row. The first three shots were misses to the left but they were in a group you could have covered with a quarter. BTW you miss You Fail. cut the edge You Fail The practice is cheap, but reloads in a 45 can be had for VERY VERY Cheap. Buying lead you can shoot for around $5/100 a box (I stopped shooting 45 2 yrs ago to concentrate on SSP and ESP) but you have to buy your stuff in bulk 8# of powder, 3-5 K bullets, a sleave of primers 5K, have your own brass. Look for good buys etc and haggle at gunshows... Its still cheaper than buying 9mm. 9mm can be reloaded for about the same but using jacketed bullets if you find them right... If you dont want to reload then I am unaware of any 45 bullet that can be bought for the same price as 9mm. If you buy it plan on changing the Extractor as someone said, best choice IMO is the AFTEC. Some will say theirs works fine, yea thats wonderful. Plan on replacing it. These 9mms are also much more sensitive to anything being wrong. A 45 seems to have a lot of forgiveness built in the 9mm has to be RIGHT to work 100% and may not then. The Mags as everyone has told you are the real weak link in the system, you get them figured out and you are ready to go. Wilson is supposed to have one or have one comming out that will be "THE" answer to the problem. Those of us shooting the 9mm 1911 have heard that before too! I dont think I would buy a 9mm as a practice gun for a 1911 45 (But I reload) But I would most definately buy one for an ESP gun. I love mine even, if it did cost me a national match.....Or was that the Ed Brown Extractor..... Larry P Oh, Vincent is on the money on loading them long too!
  3. OK Ill jump in here cause I think I know why.. I disagree with Johnny 100% too. Answer: Because some cheating a_-hole figured out that he could do a Speedload and blame it on a Malfunction or whatever and get away with it.... SO instead of penalizing THAT F'in Bastard and leaving it at that we end up over thinking it and worrying about someone that really is innocent of all of it. The problem here is the people from IPSC set up their guns (Limited and Limited 10) to not lock back because they do speedloads and never run dry (an old tactic that has much merrit). They bring the same gun over to IDPA to try a new sport and it hinders them...Then there are the .5% of shooters out there that will cheat and they have figured out a way to CHEAT around the gun locking back by calling it a malfunction ... If the person is truely shooting empty without the slide locking back it will do nothing but hurt their score....I see zero problem...You wanna screw yourself Ill let you. Honestly I think its STUPID to even worry about this, any SO thats on his toes will catch it if its wrong in all but 99% of the cases (there is a reason they might not catch it but I am not going to splain it for the bastards to learn from) At that point in a best case situation a .2-.4 second advantage of a speedload just cost you 3 seconds min for doing a speedload. Not worth the risk in my book. If they take the time to rack the slide I dont care if the gun locks back or not. Its just like the using the slingshot method to release the slide...... SLOW, And that is not only used in competition but TAUGHT by "tactical" instructors that think I am so inept I cant hit a slide release! Racking the slide is no different NONE in fact its worse. SO if they have their gun set up to do it they are hurting themselves WAY more than helping. To be cheating with it they would have to do so on EVERY STAGE and I dont think they will get away with it for that long. In addition to that worring about that is an invitation to insanity. Ive seen way to many factory and factory custom guns that wont lock the slide back from the factory and I am talking about regular Kimbers, Sprinfields, Wilsons, Baers etc 1911 45s not the ones from S?I. many slide stops are sold with detents so deep there is no freakin way you will get it to lock the slide back. Last but not least IF I was going to do it I know enough about a 1911 to make it impossible to tell without a mastergunsmith and either taking the gun apart and or miking the parts involved and I am an amature Gunsmith so anyone that knows more than me should be able to do it even better... there are a few ways to do it where it would be impossible to be sure that it was done on purpose..........This is a waste of time and energy for all involved! Glocks are bad about it. because the slide release is right under the thumb. Tell me how to say that was done on purpose? We are wasting our time with this one ....Teach the SOs what to look for and that will take care of that.....otherwise we are dealing with malfunctioning guns (which there are WAY more of than people trying to cheat) and guns set up for IPSC Ditto the above PLUS these guys are competitiors also and they will correct their guns on their own when they realize that its hurting their times.. IMO we are going to hurt the good guys while trying to catch the .5% that are cheaters.....Personally I think thats the wrong way to go as the only thing it really accomplishes is pissing "good" people off. Lets go after the KNOWN cheaters and put them under a microscope.......get them out. Instead of looking for things like this that will cause a bigger problem than they fix! Johnny you know I respect your opinions, and you. I think this is one where you are wrong. I think you have fallen prey to things that "can" happen but very rarely do! I dont think this deserves the discussion its gotten here already, much less the amount that it has gotten in other places.... See ya soon and we'll talk about it face to face! JMO Larry P
  4. Hey I just realized I can "see target" COOL!
  5. Presently NO Neither currently are illegal. But if you make a big deal out of it someone will decide that youre gun not locking back is somehow an advantage and make it illegal for the slide stop not to work. Larry P
  6. Well its been around 2 1/2 years since I visited this thread and posted last time. Since its back on the board I thought I would give an update on some things I have learned that may help some of you guys too. One of the biggest gains I had in my reloads were from someone on this thread saying "most people just lazily get their hand to the mag and back up to the gun" That was a TREMENDOUS help. You can take 1/2 second off most peoples reloads that are simply not doing this! Learning to RELAX was HUGE to me, I cant tell you how to relax only that you MUST. The first time you relax and hit a mag change KNOWING you are relaxed....its an eye opening experience. Next is I was having a serious problem not hitting the hole. I did something people talk about with the Draw. I reverse "engineered" it. I really did it by accident at first and realized it would help a lot. I was practicing my RWRs for IDPA and relaized that taking the mag out correctly would also line the gun up for a reload. I simply placed the gun where it should be to be in line with my arm for the most effient and smootest reload. It made a HUGE difference in being able to hit the hole. even without a magwell! Also in looking at the magwell I learned that I can look at different points to move the mag insertion point IE: I was always missing low so I moved my focus from the lower edge to the Top edge of the magwell If you consistently miss the same way move your focus around on the well until you find where "YOU" need to look. Worked for me anyway! The next really big gain in live fire or matches, and the reason most of us have problems doing it in a match, is you MUST learn to reload INSTANTLY the milisecond the last shot is fired. Most people can pick up substantial time learning to do this alone. KNOW where you will reload and DO IT NOW! The next was learning to keep the gun out farther. I never new how much this helped but using Steves book in DF it will take .1 - .2 off your reloads. Another thing I tried that seems to help me smooth things out (I dont know WHY) but the "Tactical" guys say to wait until the reload has been touched (making sure its there) before dropping your current mag (assuming its not empty and you are speedloading) This wont work for some of you and probably wouldnt for me (hitting the falling mag with the new one) anymore either but it did smooth things out for a while, possibly just a trick of the day thing to make my attention be focused elsewhere. Anyway there are my tips. I havent practiced with a 1911 in almost 2 yrs so I have no idea my reload times with it now. BUT My best reload recorded with a Glock G17 with no magwell at 7 yds on an IDPA tgt was high .8s I can normally hit around 1 second on demand and have yet to go below 1.2 in a match that I know of! All that is about to change thought I started dry practice again after a 6 month hiatus and I am seeing many things that will help me improve everywere. In the reload dept I think I can hit some of those sub second "drill type" reloads now after just a couple weeks. Oh someone asked about RWR times and TL times. Last time I practiced them my best "LIVE FIRE" RWR was in the real low 1.4s the best tac load is in the mid 1.6s both with a Glock 17. Thanks to all of you for the help, and I hope some of this will help someone else! Larry Pogue
  7. If you are drawing as fast as you can smoothly/correctly draw a HG....Youre drawing at 100% of your ability. Ditto all the other things we do! When your draw (or whatever) gets Jerky etc your trying to go faster than you can control the weapon, which means you are trying to go faster than your present ability allows. (nothing wrong with that BTW, thats how you learn and accel. you will never know your ability unless you go beyond it) IE: Presently my controled fast draw times with guaranteed hits are in the high .9s to low 1s at 7yds. I am capable of taking .2 - .3 off that time. At .7 There is no telling where in the hell the bullet is gonna go though! To me drawing at 100% means around a 1 second draw with a 95% chance of a -0. Drawing at 130% means I have a 90% chance of hiting the tgt, and 70% chance of hitting -1 and about a 40% chance of hitting the -0 In other words I am HOPING to hit the -0 I dont like telling myself to "hold back" (shoot at 85 -90%) I would rather tell myself "go as fast as your ability will allow" Where the change in attitude came from I dont know but a guy said that to me the other day on the range, "only shoot 90% and it just clicked"....No dont HOLD BACK, shoot to YOUR ability. if that takes 10 seconds, it takes 10 seconds. The trouble comes (IMO) when you "TRY" to make it take 8 seconds to beat whoever, now you are out of your ability zone by 20% (120%). Shooting 90% means you know you can do it 100% at 10 seconds but youre telling yourself to slow down to 90% and run an 11. OOPS I just figured out where it came from: Brian Enos - something like "The time to make the shot is what it is". Jack, your post was great, gives me a way to push just a little without putting #s on stuff. Thanks. Larry P
  8. Rhino, Then I did it 4 times in a row. I was using a stock Gateway mouse (performance center breathed on it and I have taken it apart and polished the mating surfaces though) I have a special mouse pad that may have helped (very sensitive to movement) and BTW I did change the screen Color to crimison RED! So when I "See Red" as I often do, I recognize the change more quickly. you guys have fun! Oh, talk about creepin, A buddy sent me a screen picture of a .001 Larry P Edit: oops thats a .01
  9. Well you guys were so much faster than me I tried for about 1 minute again. At .03 it says, "You have the reflexes of a snake!" Im done now I dont care who beats me or by how much... Larry P
  10. Thanks everyone. I noticed that I am getting better at calling my shots too. I havent done much work at all with this but I seem to be in one of those learning stages where; when I do ANYTHING I learn something. I guess taking 6 months off was a good thing. I think I am right on the edge of another level of shooting.... MAYBE! Gonna try to start devoting 30 min a day to it
  11. Rich, I havent even half commited yet. Ive been just toying around with it. As I said in the Sale forum, I think this DF alone will make a bigger difference in one WEEK, than the DF & livefire I was doing before the nats last year for 6 months. Im a Nut when I get into it, HOURS a day! Too much to do right now though, shooting has to be a back priority....Of course I could....Stop typing on the internet..... Steve, Have you figured out a percentage of increase that seems to be an avg or something similar for the more complicated stuff? How close are your times in LF? I havent built the plate rack but its coming. I do some woodwork for a living and I built some scaled tgts 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 out of 3/4" plywood with a outside coating that is very close to Buff color. You may have seen Matts! I also do 4" circles out of 3/8" plywood and Paint them white. Unfortunately I dont have the space for fullsize tgts to do anything but a Draw, so I have to use 1/2. Those 1/8 scale tgts....THEY will make you concentrate..... I honestly havent even looked at the Plate Drills yet. There is quite a bit of stuff that will make a bigger difference at matches that I need to work on first, and I am going to focus on that for a while. Larry P
  12. I did the Shoot 6, Reload, and shoot 6 the other afternoon. In Dryfire I run a 5 sec Par with a G17. Its not Comfortable and I am at this point pushing a bit, a missed draw or reload or distraction will blow it. but I can get what I think are good consistent sight pics and transtitions. At 4.9 I am not making it. normally dont get the last shot. Well in Live fire I am running in the high sixes. I was SOing an IDPA stage and when everyone was gone I would practice. I only shot it 5 times, 3 after an hour break between each & 2 back to back. I ran a 6.4 something but dropped a -3 and a couple -1s. 4 runs were very close at 6.8, 6.79, 6.74, 6.92 most of that was dropping 2-3 points. The two together were the fastest and slowest. Draw to sight pic in Dryfire par is .8 @ 10yds actual shooting I ran several 1 shot draws in the high .9 range which makes sense because I am starting to get the -0.1 par of .7 I want to do this again when I have more time and I can actually play a little. In the DF I run through all the other drills in order getting to this one. My Draws are ON, & reloads down by the time I get there. I wonder if thats part of the time difference. The other thing is I think my splits are running (again) right at .2s.... .2 x5 reload .2 x5 = 2 seconds HMM almost the exact difference.... But I dont think my reloads were ON today either. Best reload today was a 1.3 something.... Draws were still TOTALLY inconsistant too, anywhere from 1.16 to 1.37 so I still have MUCH work to do on consistency..... So are any of you running times consistent with your Dry Fire Drills and what have you found to help you get in sync? Thanks Larry P
  13. To apply that logic you absolutely HAVE to be a FREAKIN ATTORNEY! Let me make sure I understand this. BECAUSE it says National and State Level "Sanctioned" matches, but makes no mention of "Regional Sanctioned" matches, nothing in the rule applies to "Regional Sanctioned" matches that applies to National or State "Sanctioned" matches????? Just out of curiosity what would the purpose of having a regional match “Sanctioned" be? So what if it’s just a plain old "Sanctioned" match? "You can’t promote me, we are at a "Regional" match, and they are not covered by the rule book...." Yep, he’s right. Strictly interprited, thats what it says...IDPA is going to HAVE to have technical writers! OK Ill one up you. Go back to the front of the rulebook, where it says the Range Master can pretty much do whatever he wants and he is the FINAL arbiter at a match!!! DONE....... you’ve been moved up and out ranked and its "sanctioned" by HQ. Furthermore if you call HQ and tell them you were moved from X to Y at the ------ Regional match and you want to know if that move stands referencing the logic above, I think someone is probably going to laugh at you thinking you are joking. Johnny just make the rulebook say "all sanctioned matches" I don’t mind the alias stuff, what I hate is having to type a 15 character name, then having to keep going back to and seeing how its spelled, such nonsense. Larry P
  14. On some of the more complicated Drills like Shoot 6 Reload Shoot 6 What is the difference between you guys Dry times and your "RL" Times? Im running almost 2 seconds slower on actual shooting times. On the plus side I am dropping about as many points as I call when I dryfire. So I am calling my shots better! You know being honest and all I still manage to drop points when I dryfire... Maybe I should start a new thread on this? Larry P
  15. The biggest problem with the classifier is that almost 30% of it (27 to be exact) is shot at a range of 20 yds. Im just curious here but, when was the last time someone went to a major match that 27% of it was shot at 20yds or more?? at the nats that would have been something like 75-100 rounds... Kinda Goofy aint it! I have yet to see that. Also 9 shots on heads. another 10% again at the nats we are talking 25 - 35 headshots! Those two kill more classifications than anything else in the classifier. Doesnt matter though regardless what we do to it, I dont know how you could ever make it like shooing a match! Dont get me wrong I think the classifier is an EXCELLENT skills test of shooting ability.......but it has little to do with "match" performance! Larry P
  16. Yea, cause some, if not most, people dont have a CLUE what torture is! They cant even comprehend it.. Sadam knows though! Larry P
  17. Quite honestly I don’t give a flying Fig what they did to those prisoners..... if they had to kill three of those bastards to keep another 911 from happening, so freakin be it! draw and quarter them! I’m so sick of hearing how terrible this is.... no I don’t condone it, I don’t like it. But I won’t loose sleep over it either! The dichotomy of this situation is amazing to me.... We can Kill, Maim, destroy property and lives on both sides and that’s acceptable, but we cant humiliate some freakin TRASH that are most likely terrorists to get a info out of them....... WTF? Yea there are times when they went to far and I understand and agree that they shouldn’t have... Hell I may even agree than they should be punished. But having prisoners walk around nude in front of women, having them ridden like horses by women, having the women laugh at them and point at their genitals, stacking them like cordwood while they are nude......Sleep deprivation, making them stay in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time …. THAT was the big part of the news story that had everyone so upset........... WHO GIVES A F#$$!!!!!!! WTF are they supposed to do feed them milk and cookies!!! Now there were other things that SUPPOSEDLY went on and I understand that those things were out of line but don’t ask me to feel all gooey because of it! KISS MY @$$..... They better be glad we didn’t just yell "kill’em all and let God sort em out" and turn the place 2000 degrees after they cut off….excuse me SAWED off the kids head ! and mutilated our boys SCREW THEM! ! This whole freakin thing should have been a news blurb and been GONE! In fact, according to some people it was released about 6 months ago and the American people YAWNED ...there were no pictures then.... THATS THE THING WE SHOULD BE PISSED OFF ABOUT....They let some IDIOT take pictures..........MORONS! We are simply to fat dumb and happy in this country for our own good! Apparently 911 hasn’t awaken the idiots in this country to the fact that the world is not all Roses ……..There are THORNS We act like these guys stole a loaf of bread or something!!! Of course the media hasn’t made much of the fact that most (if not all) of them are known or suspected Al Quaida. Hell John Carry is a Presidential candidate and admits to committing war atrocities that involved much worse...... THAT seems to be OK though.......hell it IS "OK" he is currently a Senator......OF course his partner Senator Kennedy killed a lady that’s OK too!!! Give me a freakin BREAK is there even such a thing as Logic anymore????? Sorry for the rant....... ...NO IM NOT, THIS IS BS and it drives me NUTS!!!!!!!!! Im so sick of hearing it I want to Scream (that’s why I’m posting) I guess I am just a Wolf and don’t get this Sheep crap I wonder how big a story this would be if it had happened about 7 months from now....You know AFTER The elections were OVER! Larry P Wow, I almost feel better!
  18. Whats "thinking"? Congrats....
  19. It certainly was to me... as was breaking the 1 second reload. etc Congradulations. Larry P
  20. Shred, send me the video, I'll dub in some dumb comments and put us up a website. We'll make millions! Ok, so a new video camera got the best of me... One-Footed ISO .50 AE (WMV, 1.3MB) Plus the video that must never be shown to the uninitiated (750K WMV) LMAOTMSH! THATS FUNNY! ! You need to send that to him!!!! his response will be "but you only shot TWO rounds!!!! The egret!!!! I love it!!!! Hmm, maybe I should put up a video of me shooting that 2.73 second -0 Bill Drill. In the dark. With a 44 mag and full power 240gr loads, using a 4" 329 that weighs 26 ozs.... Larry P Shred is my Hero!
  21. I have a bit of a hard time believing one of Mikey's films was the best artistic entry at Cannes. His films are not what I'd call 'high cinematic art'. Couple that with his 20 minute ovation (so lets see, if the longewst previos ovation was, say, 2 minutes, then his film was not just the best but it was 10 times better than anything else?) and you get one conclusion. We Hate Bush and Will Do Anything (including prostrating our art and prostituting Cannes) To Make That Point...Again. You know, Saddam Hussein won 100% of the vote in his last election! - Gabe Gabe, AMEN. He cant even get Disney to release it. If it was that good, Disney would, if not Disney others would have been standing in line to release it.....Didnt happen. 300#er, not that I think highly of Hitler but this guy only has Cukes following him. And not even many of them. hell hollywood booed him at the emmys (?) No he is NOT a Hitler.....He wishes he had the 1millionth the oratory abilitly that Hitler did.... Hitler didnt have anywhere near the production ability that Moore has and he still had half the world believing he was the savior........ Moore is a cuke that has the ability to produce a movie...nothing more and a lot less..... Freakin MORON, thats about sums him up! He is not Ignorant, he is STUPID, course he is laughing all the way to the bank even with the little following he has! Sorry, Like BE I HATE THAT F*&*ING #&%#@($)(@#$(*@!$(!)(^%!(*@$)(@!&)#* ( oh hell just insert Carlens 7 words here) but make it worse.....Youll get the idea. Quentin Tarantino was a part of it Larry P
  22. Brian, Why don't you tell us how you really feel about "Somebody that we don't need to talk about on the SHOOTING forum"? Glad to see you're not conflicted about him.... My opinion of Quentin Tarantino rises with everything I read about the man... Let me take him down a notch for you. He was the head of the commitee (? or whatever its called) that nominated and approved Moores movie! Larry P
  23. Very true. And not only is there no time, it would be presumptious and rude to 'correct' people and 'instruct' them on anything (defense or competition oriented) without their request or, at the absolute very least, their permission. - Gabe I have to disagree there. "sometimes" Club shooters I correct all the time, but I know them and they know me. At the Nats I corrected a shooter for wrapping his off hand thumb around his the pistol like it was a Wheelgun. His grip was so low that he didnt get hurt but I was worried that he might! He thanked me, made a special point to thank me after the match, then complained to the MD about me saying I was rude and condesending. Not sure I "care" what anyone does anymore! Larry P
