  1. Thanks for all the responses. I tried all of the powders mentioned above with the Precision's. WST was the best experience. BTW, +1 to David of Precision for taking the time to respond to email with solid recommendations. He (along with others on this thread) pointed out that a barrel with even the slightest amount of lead build-up would lead more, and most likely strip the coating off. I'm settling on 5.2 grains of WST under the Precision 200 RNFP for the GAP load. This chrono'd just around 850. I will try some Clays if I ever get some. Scott
  2. Thank you for the information. Today I tried WSF with a little more powder. The result was much less unburned powder, but quite a bit of lead. So I'm still looking for a .45 GAP load for 200 grain Precision's RNFP. Scott
  3. All, First off, thank you for the great information on the forums. That said, I have read all the threads I can find on 45 GAP and still have a few questions for those with more experience. I recently switched from shooting Single Stack to revolvers. I am interested in .45 GAP because I have more small primers than I do large primers. On to the questions... The first question is about crimping: I'm using 45 ACP Dillon dies on a 550 and can't get enough crimp to stop bullet pull. The die bottoms out on the shell plate so the max crimp I can get is about .468 -ish... not enough to stop bullet pull at less than major loads. I'm loading 200 Precision's with Speer brass. My question about crimping is: How do you crimp your rounds and will a crimp loose enough to allow bullet pull lower the FPS and/or cause unburned powder? My second topic is about working up a load. To date I have chrono'd eight loads using a 200 grain Precision RN with Speer brass. ........................WIN....................CCI ...................Small Pistol..........Small Rifle WSF 5..............612......................640 WSF 5.5...........677......................656 n340 5.4..........592......................641 n340 5.9..........699......................739 All of these loads had a LOT of unburned powder, but no signs of pressure. I also chrono'd my .45 ACP load, which is 230 grain Zero FMJ over 6.2 grains of WSF with Federal large pistol primer at: 747 fps. This load chrono's almost the same out of my Kimber. I have two questions here: Why so much unburned powder and does anyone have a .45 GAP load for 200 grain Precision bullets? Thanks again, Scott
  4. I work in this space for a large company... I've seen a lot of synch issues that result from 'delegated authority'. In other words, allowing another user to also manage the schedule from another mailbox. Give me some background... who hosts your mail server? Is it M.S. Exchange? Are they running Blackberry Enterprise Server? Also, can you describe the synch issues? Thanks, Scott
  5. Having recently made the switch to the round-gun (may even get to shoot the Nationals!) I have become interested in a Model 17 or 617. On the way home from work, I visited a couple of less frequented gun stores and came across a 17-3 with a six-inch barrel. I would estimate it at 70-80%; the finish and crown are rough, the bore looked good and the the lock-work seemed very good. They are asking $550 plus tax which seems high to me considering the other store had a new 617 for $730 plus tax. Your feedback is appreciated. Scott
  6. Saw one today at a gun show in Atlanta for $560.
  7. Good point... the thumb-through method may also help keep my hand from getting to close to the end of the barrel... maybe a 5-inch barrel would help as well
  8. Great advice! I discovered that after my first match I now keep a couple of moonclips full of shot brass and use them to begin the reload sequence. Scott
  9. Yes, it's a 625, bought it from a guy here race ready. I'll go back and give the the thumb-through method another try. Thanks for the comments!
  10. A video showing three reloads... I'm a lefty and use the "thumb over the top" method with my right hand when reloading. Looking for advice, feedback or comments (especially regarding weight or baldness ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gI_rmEO9n4
  11. How fast do you push a 150 grain bullet in 30-06? Using Remington, Lake City and Greek brass, I'm getting flat primers at 2750 fps. I've received conflicting opinions on the whether or not this is safe and or acceptable and wanted to open the discussion up to a wider audience. These are fired out of a 1942 K98 Mauser action, and a 1903A3 Springfield. Thanks!
  12. Thanks for the responses. I'll give it another go with the sand paper.
  13. I have three different springs: one from the older, LE mag, the Dawson spring and the springs that come in the newer mags. I've had the most success using the new(er) standard spring... then I can get +3 in the mag, but it won't feed correctly. Thanks!

    Dawson Basepads

So I have searched the forums and read a tremendous amount of information and I am still only getting +2 using Dawson +5 basepads. This is on Glock 22 mags, with both #5 and #8 followers using new style and older (LE Only) mags. What gets me is several people on the forum report +5 with no issues. I would really appreciate any help on this matter.
  15. To all the revolver shooters on the forums! I was able to find answers to all my questions about revolver shooting, from equipment to loads to lefty reloading techniques. Thanks again!

    Great dealer, fantastic service.
  17. Regarding basement workspace, do you generally consider the area near the electric panel or sub-panel as more sensitive than other areas? I think common sense dictates that powder, primers and loaded ammo be stored away from any place that can generate sparks, but what about bullets in cardboard boxes? Or loading manuals, or brass? Thanks!
  18. What (semi)-premium 1911 would you buy if you had $2500 to spend? I've had a few Kimbers, a Colt, a Springfield and a Spartan. Thanks and I look forward to the witty repartee
  19. I can help. I've been in software dev for years and have done a variety of websites. I'll also shoot you a PM.
  20. I use an OpenBSD based firewall. OpenBSD comes with PF (Packet Filter) and with it you can do some pretty interesting things. For example, I have a rule that detects brute-force attempts to login via SSH. It has a threshold and too many failed attempts too close together results in that IP being blocked. The pertinent lines from my pf.conf file are below: === # tables table <bruteforce> persist # Block bruteforce attempts block log quick from <bruteforce> pass quick proto tcp from any to any port ssh flags S/SA keep state (max-src-conn 15, max-src-conn-rate 5/3, overload <bruteforce> flush global) === Below is a readout of the IP's that have been blocked so far: sybill:/home/scottr/sysadmin $ sudo pfctl -t bruteforce -T show 58.30.19.23 59.41.39.101 59.63.25.158 61.92.29.236 61.128.234.216 64.20.61.114 83.240.39.137 94.136.34.213 132.216.35.26 200.74.160.178 200.111.64.171 201.47.187.138 202.8.157.123 202.117.56.29 202.124.181.41 219.76.75.6 219.155.46.233 sybill:/home/scottr/sysadmin $

If you don't have what I called about, tell me when I call and don't have me drive across town during rush hour. Business may be good now, but this is no way to win friends and influence people.
  22. Noticed that several competitors did not complete all stages... was that weather related?
  23. Congrats Odie! I shot with him at the Area 6, quality guy.
  24. G-Man, You're on the right track... thinking of actually shooting what I carry... currently shoot a Glock in prod (mid C) and carry a j-frame and trying to come up with a platform I can shoot and carry. Thanks!
