  1. Thank you! I was easy to spot, a guy who shot poorly and was still happy about it! I appreciate everyone welcoming us into the SC community, I can’t say enough things about how we were treated, and the overall positive atmosphere of the shoot. Every one of the RO’s were kind and professional and quick with a word of encouragement after each stage. I am thankful that I was able to participate.
  2. He turned 10 on 4/21. I bought him a practice pass for WSSC this week. He is in love with it now. I didn’t get to watch every squad I wanted to, but we had a ton of encounters with the pros up in the practice bays. Now I just need a second job to pay for ammo, cuz he is ready to practice and go back to CMP for his first match in June. Thanks, David
  3. Just an Update. I had a blast, got to practice with members of the Super Squad, got to shoot with the junior Super Squad, and everyone I met was supportive and encouraging. I shot Limited and finished with no missed plates and no procedurals. Had a clean match and I left feeling great about my future involvement in the sport. My son turned 10 this week, and everyone asked if he was going to shoot next year. When my son was practicing, Muneki came over to watch him, and proceeded to give him a clinic in .22 pistol, and 9mm pistol. He worked on his grip, stance, and recoil control. I could not have asked for a better encounter with a professional shooter. Lance Bratcher, Jr. is a joy to be around too, and I had the supreme privilege of watching him shoot 1.08 on a Smoke n Hope string with PCCI. It was THE most perfect performance of the entire week. His demeanor is fantastic, and I plan of taking a class with him later in the year. I finished last in Limited and missed D Class with a 39.23%, but who cares, I had one of the most exceptional weeks of my life. Thanks again for all the encouragement!
  4. Looking at Squads just now and remembered this post. Glad yall are getting to shoot together!
  5. Thanks bigdawg! That is exactly what I was looking for. I am very excited to be there, and I’m appreciative that I got a spot so late. I just want to have a good time and learn what I can. Thanks again, David
  6. Hello, Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I got on the waiting list, sent a short, polite email to Zach Jones, and this evening I got opened up to squad! I’m shooting Squad 37 Thursday PM. That will give me time to go check things out and see what’s up, and get a chance to use the Practice Bay. If you have any tips on large match etiquette, I would appreciate it. Is it okay to talk to the Super Squad after they finish all stages? Thanks again, David West
  7. Yes, steel challenge is what I meant. I think the limited movement in Steel Challenge and the instant, audible feedback would be better for him. Thanks for the input!
  8. My son is 10 and he loves to shoot. He has not wanted to go with me to a competition in the past, but he came to one recently and he loved it and asked me when we could go and shoot together. He knows and obeys safe firearm practices and he is proficient with a .22LR rifle or pistol. Is there an age limit, and how soon is too soon to let them shoot in a comp? I am thinking a local SC match would be great. Thanks, David
  9. Find myself in the same place that I have been in so many times. I find something that I love to do, I get a good start, then family and work take up every single waking hour that I have. I have to be okay with going off and doing something for myself, even if they are not. I need to recover and rejuvenate myself so that I can help them to be their best also. From a shooting standpoint, I have not been dry firing per se, but I am working on my grip. It is one thing to go out and shoot one or two magazines on in the back of the property at the end of the work day, but it is another to create a sustainable performance over a long course of fire. I was focusing on my draw, and I realized even with that, I was holding the pistol in an uncontrollable manner the faster that I went. I need to find a grip that is stable and repeatable, and will diminish recoil.
  10. I am new to competitive shooting and I have gotten plugged in with this group. A very humble bunch of shooters who take pride in the matches they put on, and work hard to create a welcoming environment for all participants. 10/10 would highly recommend! David
  11. I shot an SOF match this past weekend. I completed the match and was able to perform all physical tasks that were required of me. I had some hiccups in the first few stages, and I just stopped and cried in between stage three and four. I do not believe it was about the shooting, it was about the inadequacy that I felt in life, and in caring for my family. Also the stress of Covid and losing members of the family that I had never grieved for. I just got it all out and moved on to the next stage. I finished the match with a new peace and I was thankful that I was getting a chance to get out and participate in such a fun and challenging sport. My most proud moment was engaging steel at 250yds on the first shot while basically standing on my head. It was the RPGI SOF match I shot: MPA DS9 Hybrid 9mm Millenium Custom Limited 9mm Daniel Defense/Razor LPVO Ammo: Winchester White Box 124gr Hornady Frontier 5.56 55gr
  12. JD40 its very well balanced and the undercuts and aggressive aluminum grip just weld it into position. I ordered a holster from them and got to talk directly to David Lyell who is a USPSA Grandmaster and head of tech support for them. I'm not sure what other custom gun works give you direct access to an expert end user of the product. When I was researching it, I read several many posts from people who had contacted him directly and he helped them plan and order a gun based on each person's needs. I'm new to shooting sports, but I think that is excellent customer service.
  13. Right hand shooter, left eye dominant, with astigmatism. I just recently started wearing bifocals. I feel like the day is coming soon where I will need my doc to measure me more precisely. I appreciate the tip on the Hunters HD Gold. David
  14. 100% I bought a Millenium Customs 2011 because it is an amazing pistol, not because I thought it would win matches for me. I am a gun collector first and now a competitor distant second. Now that I have started competing though, I realize that the pistol and my shooting are acceptable, it’s my movement, planning, and efficiency that need all the work. This game is hard, no matter what you bring!
  15. Thanks for this tip. I am a firm believer in silicon lubricant, and will definitely do this the next time I have the mags apart. David
  16. Interesting topic. Had a class this weekend and everyone recommended a thumb rest, but this thread makes it seem to be a mixed bag. I will just work on locking my wrist out and keeping my thumb off the slide, and I think I will get better results.
  17. Thank you, right now I’m new enough that I just like competing against myself. Maybe I’ll complain too when I get better
  18. I’m expecting that to happen over the next year too. David
  19. Yes I will be there all week. Are there other things to do, like clinics or RO courses, or should I just try to plug in as a volunteer. Also I will try to contact Zack. Thanks, David
  20. THIS IS MY FIRST NEW “custom” pistol. All tolerances are super tight, and I am interested to see what it settles out to once I get up past 1000 rounds. My SN is over 1000. I will say that the fit finish and feel is so much better than any other pistol in that price range. My FFL carries an 8’ case of 2K-4K pistols and the DS9 was the best overall. I hope they have success going forward, and that they set a new precedent for the quality you should get at that price point. David
  21. Hello, I live less than one hour from Talladega, AL. I am new to SC this year. I am also off the week of the WSSC. I am definitely going to be there during the week, but I am wondering if I would be able to shoot? I do not even have a rating yet, since all I have shot are local matches. I know I would not be overwhelmed or out of place, and I would definitely like the experience. Any and all feedback is appreciated! David
  22. I have a MR .22wmr rifle with thumbhole stock that comes in at 4.5 lbs, I would like to shoot RFO with it. It has the Ruger enhanced trigger in it. What would you recommend for a better trigger? Sorry to be a bit off topic, but I appreciate the help.
