DTC 2008 Video

I shot my first major this past weekend at the Double Tap Championship. Other than mag problems, I think I shot a pretty solid match. I ended up getting 2nd in unclassified Limited, which I didn't expect at all. I got all of my hits except two mikes for the whole match. One thing I noticed from the videos, was that I was moving a lot slower than it felt when I was shooting the stages.

Let me know what you think.

Deleted due to email! (Not from Gunner)

Gunner If I was offensive in any way I apologize. I did not think I was and did not intend to be.

Yeah I know, and I know what the problem is. I had ordered some new mag springs, but they didn't come in before I left for the match.

Hmmmm....old mag springs won't make those mags fall out. You gotta big mag release button on that gun ???

Watching it again, it sure seems like you are having issues beyond mag springs. Gauging the ammo in the actual chamber is a good idea (take the barrel out of the gun). It seems like a few pounds heavier on the recoil spring might help in feeding too (assuming the extractor is properly tuned).

Sorry to keep preaching on that, but bringing "stuff that works" is the number one thing on my list of things to do to perform well.

What about the shooting?

The shooting looked pretty solid. You look smooth and in control. That comes of as deliberate, but i don't think I'd change that. Just keep on paying attention.

At least I think it is the mag springs. I was having problems with a failure to feed. One of the mag springs is second hand with an arredondo +5 basepad. This was the mag that gave me the most trouble. I do have an extended mag release, but probly not for long after this weekend.

I am using factory WWB ammo with a tungsten guide rod and 13 lb. ISMI spring. I got the 15 lb. ISMI spring in a few days before the match, but didn't want to change anything that late.

I feel like I'm getting used to the gun, I've only been shooting it since January.

All right, Ross - had a chance to watch this a couple of times, now... ;)

Guys, I can tell you, Ross has come a long way in a short period of time. You should have seen how he was hitting the target, and what his grip and stance were like last year, when I had a chance to work with him for half a day. Ross, you've taken everything we went over in that lesson, and are putting it to good use. I'm very glad to see the progress you've made!!!

Two mikes - one on a swinger that was mostly hidden between barrels (blame that miss on your malf earlier in the stage), and one on funky hardcover that makes calling shots hard... Nothing to sweat a bunch there, man. Keep doing what you're doing ;)

I don't have to tell you what the malfunctions cost you in the match - that's pretty obvious, and had to be frustrating as heck. Shouldn't be too hard to get those issues worked out, though. If you're shooting TX Open, that gives you a month and a half or so to square the gear and ammo situation away before then.

As far as what I can suggest, based on the vid - Keep the gun up in your peripheral vision when you're not shooting (moving, etc) - that will help with acquiring the gun when you start to go back to shooting it again. When you move more than a step or two, dismount your left hand from the gun, and move hard - see all those little tiny steps you're taking? See if you can get those lengthened out some (I have the same tendency - it feels fast, but you're not covering any ground) - getting the left hand off the gun helps you pump your arms a bit to get moving, etc.

Aside from the bumpy stuff with the malfs, it looks like a very solid match for you. ;) Keep up the good work in practice, man - its paying off in dividends!

Ross, you looked very smooth and had great hits out there. You made it real easy on the score keepers! Darn fine performance and congrats on the trophy! You really seemed to be able to get your head in the game and focus. That's something I struggle with (yeah, I'm the idiot who dropped the dummy in front of the wall !) I could tell you've been working with Dave by your stage rehearsals and it looks like it's paying off.

Gear-wise, it sounds like you have it figured out from talking to you. I don't like less than a 15# spring in .40 myself. I sometimes run stock and honestly can't tell that much difference, but the slide on my G24 is heavier. I had issues with mags too when I was using springs that let me cram 20 rounds in. I ditched them and run the extra power springs that I buy from Dawson. Only 19 rounds, but my mags all run fine now. Chamber check all your ammo with the barrel, even with factory ammo. Yes, even with a Glock. Ask me how I know!

Nice shooting with you, hope to see you on the range again soon!

Dave:

I noticed how small my step were too, it felt like I was moving a lot faster than I was. I'll to work on some drills for stretching out my steps.

I really think that taking my weak hand off the gun will help a lot too. I didn't really notice till you said something, but I don't think I ever took my hand off the gun except for a reload.

Mike: It was great getting to meet you and shoot with you. Thanks for the support, and hope to shoot with you soon.

Either of y'all going to ALSPPC this weekend?

Doh - I was the RO on stage 1 and I recalled thinking "CRAP"!!! What a time to have a gun go down!!

You did a good job on recovering and taking the shot on the swinger between the barrels. For the record, you were the only one to attempt a shot at the target between the barrels and actually hit the target. You did the right thing by:

1 - engaging the target so you didn't get an FTE and

2 - only shooting at it once...

Keep up the good work, it'll come.

I had similar problems when I switched to extended pads for Glock. Ended up cleaning up the insides of the mags and then they worked. Little pieces of plastic and metal from the holes in mags. You did have a good grip on the gun. Looked like you kept your cool thru the problems. I might make it out to ALSPPC. I normally go to Bullethole, but it's a longer drive.

Hey Mike- What did you do to clean out the mags? I have the same thing inside of mine.

Thanks

Ross is a swingin' bachelor  No emery boards laying around, I'm sure ;) (but easily found at the grocery store or whatever...)

Haha...you got that right. I'm only 19 Chris I hope I got a few more years to go...

Thanks for the info though...I'll have to go buy one.

Hey Ross, congratulations on your first major match. I haven't shot one yet and watching your video inspired me. Besides being smooth and in control even during the gun farts, the one thing that stuck in my mind was that your finger was sticking straight out, out of the trigger guard during any and all movement between target arrays, etc. Good job  Something I myself need to pay closer attention to.

It was an enjoyable video to watch. I've seen a couple of vid's of myself and I look like a chicken with his head cut off.

Keep up the hard work.

  • 3 weeks later...

Beyond the equipment advice, I would add two things:

On movement, there are a couple of issues. One is getting started. I have a buddy who is a competitive ultimate frisbee player, and while the layman (me) often thinks it's about the throwing, it's really about the running. His advice is that when you need to accelerate, short steps are best.

However, we're talking about short, powerful steps to get speed up. Your steps looked more like you have learned to slow them down so that you weren't waiting on your reload or target acquisition, a kind of self-handicapping. GET to that next position, and if you get to the position before the reload is done, so be it. You're just that much more stable when the grip comes back.

Second, you're transitioning much more slowly than you're shooting pairs. If I recall the DTC range, you probably weren't looking at many shots over 10 yards, so your splits and transitions should sound roughly alike.

That being said, very smooth, clean moves overall, and get that gun running! Our glocks have crappy enough triggers that we need to be able to brag about reliability!

H.
