rhino
So as not to detract from Sig Lady's Kimber topic further, I thought I should start this for my own Kimber Eclipse Target II as it evolves over time. Here is how it looked before I got it: In a following message, I will post the pics of how it looks in the photos I snapped today showing the short trigger and some interesting contoured stocks. rhino
Here are the images (Thanks, SG!) as of 16MAY03. Changes: Short trigger (added the day I got it; probably taken from an old Colt) Radically contoured micarta grip panels from Navridex The grips are an interim measure until I can get my new, short grip screw bushings installed. Then I'll slap on the ultra-think micarta grips I have (also Navridex).

Yeah, I think you can see Larry Bird's footprint just to the right in the photo before I cropped it! Thanks for the compliment, sir! You're welcome to fondle and shoot the Kimber any time. As we discussed on the range last Tuesday (when I was NOT practicing), it still needs to earn a name!

Step in (it) at your own risk. --Dances with Kimbers What she said! We have to stick together! I shot the Kimber in our Special Classifier twice today. Zero malfunctions over eight stages! Unfortunately I seem to have developed a "reloading disorder." I used to be able to reload my SA 1911A1 loaded smoothely ... I wasn't exceptionally fast, but it was smooth and sure. Then I started shooting the Colt with the S&A magwell . . . apparently it allowed me to get sloppy. Now I'm having trouble hitting the opening on the bottom of the Kimber with my magazines. I did shoot "Speed E Standards" rather well (by my own standards), and my reloads on it were not bad.
3quartertime
I can attest that the evolution is coming quite nicely. I believe I even witnessed some 'Kimber worship' coming from He who loves da feets!!!

I wonder . . . if he had to ditch either his Kimber or his feet-porn collection, which would he choose?
rhino
Okay . . . the new short grip screw bushings and ultra-thin grips were installed today (21MAY03) by my Friendly Local Gunsmith (FLG). The grips look pretty much like any other double diamond checkered grips, until you feel it or look from behind. They were made by some of my homies in the Philippines at Navridex. Here is how it looks from the sides now . . . nothing unusual . . . Now the rear view . . . you can really see the difference now! NEXT UP: A proper magwell . . . will it be S&A or something else? rhino
Cool Thanks! Today was yet another lesson for me, though. When my FLG removed the old bushings and installed the new, it looked really easy. After watching, I figured I could do it myself on my Springfield Armory "Loaded" gun. Needless to say, I was once again reminded why I am not allowed to use tools. Just wait until I start working on a magwell!

Indeed, that would be our pal Darrel in Cayuga. So far he hasn't had to really do any "fixin'" on it, which is a delightful surprise and change for me (I've had bad luck with my 1911s in the past). When I swap to a higher beavertail, then he'll get to do some real "work." Of course, he doesn't have time to do any smithin' work anymore, so I don't have any idea when it will get done! DougBarnes101
Yeah I know what you mean about not knowng when it will be done. The ColtI am shooting now was left with him before Thanksgiving with a approximate delivery of Jan 1. I finally got it back about a week and a half after the shot show. I had him change the trigger, lower the ejection port, dovetail the slide for a fiberoptic front sight and replace the rear sight. The work was great - the wait was a bi*ch. rhino
Alas . . . The Kimber choked today for the first time. And it wasn't just once, but twice! I a match! (IDPA) Let's hope that's the end of that nonsense!
rhino
I had another malfunction yesterday during another IDPA match. That makes three total malfunctions in 693 rounds. This time when it failed to go all the way into battery, I tried to rack the slide. When I did it, the loaded round hanging on the extractor fell into the chamber and there was an empy case in still in the ejection port. Since it's still new, I'm not going to worry too much until I get at least 1000 rounds through it, but it's tough to ignore these things. I did make a minor change prior to yesteday's match, though. I put an 18# ISMI recoil spring in it, replacing the factory-installed 16# spring. All problems so far have been with MFS 230gr FMJ factory loads from Hungary. Many of the rounds tend to be sticky in the case gauge too.
mgmcaleer
Rhino, Are you using shock-buffs? My Kimber choked three times while using shock buffs. I removed the buff and have had no problems since.
Jon Merricks
The first Kimber I had gave me some problems until I got it broke in. Took about 2k then it never failed.
Loves2Shoot
Rhino, My Kimber jambed also, I called Kimber and they said call us back if it jambs after 1500 rounds. After about 1200 it started working right.
rhino
No shocky buffs for me! Thanks for the input, guys! I was at my FLG's shop yesterday and showed it to him. He checked the extractor and it was a little too loose, so he put a bit more tension on it. We'll see how that goes, along with another thousand rounds or so!!
