We bought some guns from STI, but didn't see the .22 conversion unit or the new production pistol. I guess we were just tired. Several companies are making the old thirty caliber carbine...just wish they would make it in some pistol calibers. 9X23 would be an excellent start. It is just a dandy size rifle to pack or shoot. A gunsmith named Rogers (the literature and business cards I shipped home have not arrived so I can't remember some of the details) had a dark gray 1911. The finish was some sort of ceramic and it was beautiful, to me. I like dark guns without the flash. A few days before I left for the SHOT Show, I bought a CZ 9mm Tactical Sport, to use for steel. I went to the CZ booth hoping to get some info from Angus about modifying it and a holster recommendation. Oh well, another story. Anyway, they had some custom shop pistols that had my mouth watering and I'm a 1911 freak! Les Baer's move is to another state, but only 13 miles from his present location. He has a double stack now. It is a Caspian frame and Caspian's unusual grip safety. The grip felt large in my hands, but no larger than a Para. I wish he would have used STI's frame. If your into the black guns (AR's) there were zillions. The arm chair nijis and play-like SWAT guys were playing dress-up and going crazy, sweeping everyone and every thing in sight. Yes, I know the guns are disabled, however, I just can't get use to having someone point a gun at me. Just me, I guess. Saw some very nice AR's in about any configuration you could think of. Olympic Arms has a new .22 pistol. I have seen it somewhere before and don't remember exactly where. It looks like a space gun and it is made from polymer. Weighs next to nothing. Getting swepped constantly is bad enough, but I hear that often the FIRST thing that show-go ers often do when they pick up a gun is put there finger on the trigger. Any truth to this? And if so, how did gun safety get this bad in America? Also heard there was a ND - which makes all the sweeping and fingering that much more serious. Hold on to your hat, it listed for $2800 and something! I have three Baer pistols and they are top shelf, but I wouldn't pay that kind of money for them. The guy at Olympic Arms said that they bought the design from someone else and then designed it as a polymer pistol. The name Wolverine does ring a bell. Not from the people at Olympic Arms, but long ago. You probably nailed it. You are right, all of the guys at Louder Than Words do phenomenal work. Every one of them was a gentleman and easy to talk to. Carlos, many of the guys I saw handling pistols checked the chambers and some locked the slide back and did their "sighting". It seemed the pistol guys were more oriented toward safety than others. I didn't hear about any problems with AD's. Each gun is suppose to have a yellow tag with a number on it. It signifies that the gun has been checked by an official of the SHOT Show and the gun is disabled. Most have the firing pin removed. On one or two you could not rack the slide, it was pinned or something. To top that all off, no live ammo is allowed inside the show. They take safety seriously. I was a policeman for over 30 years and just can't get use to having someone point a gun at me...loaded or not. I wasn't knocking the show with my comments, I go every year. It is just some of the folks that claim to be experts act like kids without parental guidance. I would recommend anyone that likes guns go if the opportunity presents itself. It is unbelievable. As a matter of fact, I like skateboard tape better than checkering. Seems easier to hold on to and can be changed if it becomes damaged or worn. They said they will start shipping March/April. Meopta is working on a K-dot with some hash marks on the bottom stadia, but they have no idea when they will be ready. Millett was really happy (and surprised) how well their 30mm 1-4 illumininated scopes are selling. I joked about them jacking up the price as a consequence (as I ordered a case of 'em ). A bullpup switch-barrel (switch-caliber, actually) mag-fed bolt-action rifle was spiffy...very VERY nice trigger, user-adjustable from two-stage to single-stage. "Shock" electric training knife that was amazing; hurt like hell to get "cut" with it. I ordered a couple to use in "avoiding edged weapon" classes, as they turn the usual chalk knife "ha, you got me" thing into "OUCH!". Heh heh... Neat (if slightly unfinished) drop-in M14 bullpup kit... Tons of flashlights. Boatloads of ARs and AR crap. Rubber chickens. Penius-shaped flashlights (really). SHOT needs to "vet" their venders better, and segregate the crapfest that is airsoft, non-firearms stuff like doggie training toys and booties/vests for Fido, flea market crap, and clothing into SEPARATE SECTIONS so folks don't have to wander through intermingled crap looking for the diamond in the dung. Still, quite fun. Got to chat with a lot of folks, including some I never met before (like that "Sheriff" Jim Wilson guy...he is a short little fellow in his high-heeled shoes and big hat). Introduced my dad to Jerry and Kay, which was entertaining, and a few other top shooters. Lost money in some casinos, broke even in others, and won fairly large at the airport (go figure). Not a whole lot new for competition shooters. GRF,DA2,EDN. Every one had new AR parts like rails, stocks and sights, naturally every time you asked about delivery on a really cool new item it was 4 months out. Magpul has a 20 round mag out and some cool stocks on the way. Looks like Bushmaster bought there rifle? Kel-Tec has the new short .308 that takes FAL mags that looks fun. J. Allen Ent. has a sweet M1A stock system as well as a new chassies that takes there own mags? for the Remington 700 that makes the AICS look like a 2x4. Yep 4 months out?? The Badger bottom metal for AI mags is still the bomb. Several production versions of piston uppers with different takes on the same concept, some much better than others. Speaking of the good ones Para now has ZM Weapons. All seem geared at the police market. JP's booth was filled with great rifles that would serve dual roles. Production is rolling on the .308 and .260. JP is now distributing for Nordic components, that Benelli tube is the nicest out there. Progressive Machine and Tool has the titanium carriers and they are works of art, as are the Benelli Ti. charging handles. Sun Devil Mfg. had a slick new billet upper and lower with a great idea for keeping them tightly mated. cool colors to. S&W had some neat new revolvers as well as the M&P Pro as there 9mm production gun in waiting. Despite all the rumor's it was confirmed by both a head sales rep and a team shooter that its not due out till like March?????? The new Millett DMS series looks promising, picked up a DMS 1x4 to test out may just be the wholly grail in 3-gun scopes as the reticle is brighter than the gen 1. The TRS and LRS series look good for budget precision scopes. Disgusted with the new 1x4 Accupoint. It has a duplex reticle with huge distracting side bars and a tiny dot that does not draw your eye, BAC will not work for me with this scope as it does with most of there others. Waited a long time to be disappointed. The Trijicon reps I talked with were clear they made it as a hunting scope. About 50 new makers of packs and clothing. Eberlestock still seems to be leading the quality and features war. Some gorgeous high end glass. Horus has that awesome reticle system. Nightforce is doing zero stops for civilians now. U.S. Optics has more versions to baffle you with brilliant quality. Leupold has a staggering array of models and the quality seems to be keeping up with production. Plus many new lower cost makers showing good glass and features, Konus and Vortex come to mind for low and mid price ranges. Flying over sitting with one of the show models made for a quick flight. Found out SHOT pays models much better than the photo convention next door. Cant forget all the great people I saw and met. Found out to late many others were there I missed.
