Gameplayer
Happened this morning to my wife while at work. She was across the hall from her office when this guy made off with her wallet. Not knowing he just stole her wallet she escorted the guy down to the emergency room (she feels like a fool). Didn't take him no time (less than an hour) to rack up almost $300 in charges before she noticed it was gone. Luckily, I was able to cancel both cards before anymore damage is done. Now the fun part begins in getting her SSN card, DL and all the other PITA stuff.
boz1911
Be glad you caught it that fast. You will still have a lot of work to do. My disgust with a thief cannot be expressed on this forum!
JThompson
You better get a service to check your credit report.... once a week, or even every day. Since they have the SS, addy etc... they can apply for more cards online and you won't even know until the bills come. They could already be doing this right now! PS Don't carry your SS cards on your person, don't put it on your checks or on your DL either. Edited January 25, 2008 by JThompson
Flatland Shooter
I've never had a problem with Identity Theft, but I keep this information handy just in case. You can contact each of the three credit reporting agencies listed below and put you wife's info on a "Fraud Alert". I believe the alert is good for 90 days and can then be renewed. It may stop a thief from getting additional credit or doing any more damage than they already have. Let us know if they catch the sleeze ball. Bill EQUIFAX 1-800-525-6285 P.O. glockrocker
Check out Lifelock.com. For $10 bucks a month they will keep your fraud alerts updated, send you a credit report to review every year, get you off the junk mailing lists (snail mail), take care of everything for you to replace the stuff in your wallet if it is lost or stolen, and they will take care of everything for you if your identity is still stolen while you are a member. Most of what they do (except the million dollar guarantee) you can do yourself, but for the $10 bucks it is out of site and out of mind and taken care of without all the hassle. I am a happy customer.
Johann the Horrible
Used to love investigating cases like that. You go to all the stores were the cards were used and look at the security tapes. Sooner or later the fool gives him/herself away. It always gave me a lot of pleasure to nail a bastard like that. Man I miss that. What I do not miss is when people died, especially children Unfortunately you cannot have the one without the other, still sometimes I miss the job a lot. Put some preasure on the cops to thoroughly investigate the case. If done diligently it normally leads to a arrest and then the bastard has the opportunity to becomes someones bitch. For some reason I like the idea, a lot.

One minor correction/addition. If you contact any of the three credit bureaus, they are required to notify the other two...so you can save two phone calls. I can't tell you how many times we see this happen and it just pisses me off to no end....all I want is one minute with these dirtbags in a very remote area with no questions asked afterwards

I am a happy customer. When I joined it was $8.00 a month for NRA Members. So far I'm happy with their sevice. Sorry to hear about this happening. I'm retired from a Maximun Security Prison and we had Inmates doing this with their families on the street.

I pulled everything out of our accounts (at the suggestion of the bank manager) and now I'm just waiting to see if it was used anywhere else before I had the chance to cancel the cards. After the bank returns the stolen funds I will then close the accounts and open new ones. Thanks to everyone for their advice and support.
Johann the Horrible
When I got to work this morning I found that the bastards broke into my shop. Not much was stolen but quite a bit of damage was done. Obviously the alarm company was involved as the thieves never tripped the alarm. They knew better that me where the passives would not pick up. The bank next door also got knocked over and their alarm also never tripped. Problem is that quite a bit of damage was done. The stupids even broke a safe out of the floor. I wish I could see their faces when they found out that there was noting in the safe. I will need to talk to my alarm company about the break-in. What on earth is the need of a alarm if the client must inform the alarm company of break-ins? Man I am mad enough to chew nails and spit rust. Flatland Shooter
just remember that every time your credit is checked, you are dropping your FICA 10 points. sorry to hear. I was taken for 2+k in 4 hours. I have never heard of this. Does it apply only when credit is checked to get a loan, or will it also affect your FICA if you are trying to be prudent and subscribe to one of the services that allow you to check your credit history on a regular basis?
