For USPSA tactical class optics

legal, as long as both parts stay mounted on the rifle for the whole match.

In other words, you can't take off the magnifier and put it in your bag, on the close-up stages. It has to stay on the gun.

Pardon the thread jack here, but are you saying Bruce then that a Tac Optics division competitor can shoot an AR w/ the Aimpoint Red dot on the AR w/ the magnifier behind it in tandem or piggy back mode, and now w/ these new (Larue?) swing out mounts, you can swing the magnifier out of the way?

I'm new to AR's and 3 gun in general so I have to ask.

So you can swing the magnifier out of the way for the close up hose 'em down stages, and then flip the magnifier back into position for the longer more precise stages?

How much would a set up like that cost w/ the aimpoint, the magnifier and the appropriate mounts?

Much grass!

Yup.

From the NROI interpretation, approved by the Board 9/29/05:

A magnifier may be used with an optical sight in Tactical division without violating the "one optic" rule, provided: a) the magnifier does not contain an aiming reticle B) the magnifier can not be used as an aiming device by itself c) the magnifier is mounted in the same location on the rifle for the entire match If these provisions are satisfied, a) the magnifier will not be considered a second/separate optic, B) and the competitor may start and use their optic in either magnified or unmagnified mode without further restriction.

Can't help you with the cost. Don't know.

Aimpoint CompM3 with Larue mount = $550

http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=19

Aimpoint magnifier = $500

http://www.swfa.com/p-7755-aimpoint-3x-magnifyer.aspx

Larue mount for magnifier = $150

http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=131

...adds up to about $1200

Versus a Meopta K-dot 1-4x for about $750 (plus rings)

$.02

Meopta Meostar 1-4 KDot w/Larue mount = $971.00

Aimpoint comp ML3 + 3x Magnifier w/Larue cantilever and Pivot mounts = $1,092.00

$121.00 price difference

I like my Meopta better for three gun but my aimpoint has a cool factor.

as long as you can't use it as a stand-alone aiming device... yup, we've said it is not an optic. Well, to be more precise, we have said that it is functionally no different than a variable-power scope, and does not violate the "no more than one optic" rule.
