Jon Merricks
One of my para mag tubes broke so I got a STI replacement. It just does'nt run good with the Para follower. So what followers are working the best. Was thinking about Grams followers, springs and base pads but I already have wolff springs and Arredondo pads, his red followers dont fit right. Also how many coils need to be on the spring. Thanks for the help.
Chriss Grube
Jon, Sti follower. The factory para won't work. The SV comp followers add one round, but they have a tendency to pop off the spring. I use wollf springs 170mm and cut, i think 3 coils off. I'll check in the morning. Got a kid hanging on the shoulder now so I'll get back to you on that. 3quartertime
I use STI followers in my STI for para tubes as well. They fit right in with no modifications. There is a difference in the shape though. You might want to check this out before you buy one or the other. A couple of mine are flat on the top. So the slide doesn't lock open at empty. The others are angled on top and the slide locks. I also tried some Arrendondo +1 followers, the small red ones. They didn't fit and the vendor said to 'sand' them to fit. I sanded alittle and before I knew it they fit so well they shot right out the top of the tube!!! I called the vendor back to tell him how well I had 'tuned' the followers, he laughed and said " just don't shoot 'em dry, they'll be fine". If your interested I could let you have them 'custom tuned +1 race red' Arrendondos for a song!!! I don't mean to butt in on your thread Jon but I have a question that may help you too. My setup; STI for para tubes, STI followers, Dawson +2 pads and Wollf springs. I usually only load to 16 maybe 17 for reliability. Is this 'normal' considering the different profile of the STI tubes? At 16 the mags run flawless, I only go to 17 when I'm afraid I'll run dry.
Flexmoney
16-17 rounds in a Para? I hope that is a 45???
3quartertime
No .40, I should have done a search before asking a question like this. I imagine there are lots of post about capacity in .40 STI for para tubes. The 'eternally lazy newbie' strikes again'!!!
Flexmoney
3qt, I'm not sure about the capacity...just givin' ya a hard time. I know that the STI tubes for the Para lose a bit of capacity. The para tubes with Dawson or Gramms pads get 20+
jhgtyre
[chiming in mode on] Yeah, my .45 para mags with Gramms pads and internals get 17. I can get 18 in them but I can't get them in the gun without really slamming them in. Chriss Grube
STI for Para dawson BP STI Follower (old style not the new flat) 19 rds of forty and no problem seating the mag. The new followers suck you lose a round.
TMC
[chiming in mode on] Para tube, Dawson BP, Para follower and Wolf +10% springs = 21 plus room for the reload. [chiming in mode off]
Flexmoney
I am not sure if this info is current (it is a from 1998), but Brownells talks about some of this STI/PO stuff here: http://www.brownells.com/benchtalk/02sprin...angeability.asp
Jon Merricks
I did the search but could'nt find anything. The wolff spings I have are too wide at coil 3 & 4 counting from the top front. I assume there is a way to bend the the coils so I can get the top of the spring closer to the top so the follwer will sit higher.
Chriss Grube
Jon, You have to get the STI springs for the STI/PAra tubes. The Para springs are totally different. They will slide right in with no mods. I checked and it is the 170's with 3 coils clipped. Brownells has them in 1,3 and 10 packs.
Jon Merricks
I have the STI springs. I had to squeeze this tube front to back to get the size right. I quess I'll have to adjust the width as well.
Jon Merricks
Found out my problems were with the springs. Compared to the new springs I just got the others had no taper in them at all and the width was fine.
Thomas Moore
just my 2 cents....para tubes, dawson bp and modified follower, and wolf +10% spring. with this setup i can push 21 and one in the tube for a total of 22 rounds.
Jon Merricks
I can only get 19 with SV follower, dp pads and 11 coils on the wolff. (Dont know what the standard way to count coils but I'm counting on the front at the top cut to the bottem cut) Went back and reread your post 40. We are talking about the sti/para tubes. Thomas Moore
please help me out. why would anyone want to use sti tubes in their para? are you able to use the mags in a sti as well? i don't understand the whole sti/para tubes. if it was me i would have just purchase the para tubes. jhgtyre
The STI tubes are narrower at the top and make reloading easier. Unfortunately they also hold fewer rounds making reloading more frequent.
Thomas Moore
thanks for the lesson.
Flexmoney
STI makes tubes for the Para...I don't think the same tubes will run in an STI. I think I'd rather have the 22 rounds that the Para for Para tubes give...and not have to worry about reloading at all on many stages
Chriss Grube
That's why you have both. The STI for those mandatory reloads and the stages the require a fast reload no matter what. The Para's for the stages that you can run w/o the reload.
Jon Merricks
The LAMR is almost always with a Para. When shooting L-10 the sti helps out lots. And like Chriss says on the mandatory reload stages again is a plus to have the sti's.
Julien Boit
Hey all, I was wondering if the Para mags made by STI works in a STI frame. Also, I know they are available in 140mm length but are there some 126mm on the market ? DVC Julien
lynn jones
the mags don't fit unless you modify the mag by enlarging the mag release hole. lynn jones
Julien Boit
Is it the only thing to modify ? It's no big deal. Thanks DVC Julien
