(read: a synopsis of my last visit This is going to sound nuts, but the croissants are better here than anywhere else on earth: crisp, fresh, flaky. Waaay better than the soggy, stale facsimiles served in the U.S. I simply could not wait to get up for breakfast because these things are so damned good! ======================================================== And in a bitter twist of irony, the last time I was here I got a 3 day dissertation on the technical prowess of French automotive manufacturing. So....what's the brand of my rental car? A freaking Peugeot!! I'm sooo going to enjoy trashing this sucker on the way through the Alps to Skywalker's house tomorrow. I think I read somewhere that France consumes about 60% of the butter produced in the world. I disagree that the food is crappy. Some restaurants are, but in general the food was very good. It's very different from what I'm used to flavor-wise, but it wasn't like Paris where I was getting served stuff I wouldn't feed my dog. The people in southern France are miles ahead of Parisiens in the personality department too. Unless you just *have* to go to see the Champs Elysees and it's delights, I'd head straight for southern France if I were planning a vacation. fryeg7 Posted March 17, 2007 Share Posted March 17, 2007 (edited) my ex-wife of 8 years was french, and i can attest to the fact that the staples of food in france are better than here. i never liked the fru-fru food very much at all, but all the basics were better. of course, they always use real butter and real animal fat (not veggie oil). she was from the south of france on the mediterranean, so seafood was big, but i don't like seafood that still looks like the animal it came from . all in all though, after a few extended visits, my impressions of france were that it is a socialist, welfare armpit that is just a hair above a 3rd world country. the people, especially parisians, for the most part, have a serious attitude problem, too. the food wasn't that good to put up with that for longer than a month or so . . . . BigDave Posted March 17, 2007 Share Posted March 17, 2007 I have the same opinion of Italy and their food, especially Tuscan. One thing I found remarkable is that I never had the "stuffed" feeling after eating a meal there that I do here. I don't know if it is the portion size, the pace or the wine, but dining was always a pleasure and very comforting. Oh, and Eric is spot on about the pastry. The BEST croissant I've ever had was from the counter at an Exxon station near Arezzo (Italy) last fall. OMG! And the espresso!!! Starbucks just needs to stop for gas in Italy and take notes.
