konkapot
I'll be mounting a new RDS to a slide; I used the mounting system that uses the existing dovetail cut. I've done it 3 times before, and I get it done but it takes a lot of pounding and cosmetically looks like an angry dude beat on it with a hammer in his garage. Any suggestions to make this go smoother and look better?
shred
This is for sights, but same-same for dovetails (maybe go a bit tighter for a scope mount)

Kilrb
I bought a Sight Pusher makes this so much easier
zzt
If the angles are correct, take a tiny bit off the bottom and try again. If no go, take a little bit more off. Eventually you will be able to drift it in without beating the crap out of it. Also, check your dovetail. Some are set up so the mount/sight has to be inserted from one side. Usually that is left to right. By tine bit I mean a thou at a time. If you go a little too far, drill and tap for two set screws. Use Blue Loctite. It won't budge.
