30wcf questions

searching for answers to my questions about .30WCF  'short range cartridge.' ammo.

 As I understand it,  the .30WCF is: .30-6-100 { a 100gr. 30 caliber lead bullet and 6 grains of powder}

1)  is .30WCF cartridge, actually the same cartridge dimensions as a 30-30 cartridge, and simply using a 100 gr. bullet and not a 150 gr bullet, and uses less powder than a 30-30 cartridge??.....then perhaps the cartridge length is shortened some? would the cartridge or bullet need to be cannelured?

2) Are .30WCF cartridges available from any ammo manufacture, so I wouldn't have to make some?

3) Or would I have to make my own from a 30-30 cartridge? and is that a possible undertaking?

4) is there another cartridge available other than a 30wcf,  to purchase today, for use in a 30-30 rifle, like I'm talking about and designed to use for small game harvesting?

5) Would cowboy action shooters use or have need to make a .30WCF cartridge?

30 WCF is an older name for the 30-30 Winchester cartridge

I am not aware of any manufacture offering low power ammunition such as you describe

Such low powered ammunition would need to be loaded by you.

There used to be adapters that would allow using another cartridge, such as a 30 Carbine in larger cartridge chambered rifles.  I do not know if they are still available, or is the 30-30 was included.

Cowboy Action mostly used pistol caliber lever actions.  I believe they do have some matches at longer ranges using rifles, but the ammunition would not be as low powered as you describe.

There could, of course, be exceptions that I'm not aware of, but the above is as I understand things.

There are safe ways to get around most things. I had a friend (much older than me and now deceased) who would cast light weight bullets for his 30-06 and propell them with pistol powder. They may have been M1 Carbine bullets. He used it for small game. Very mild report, similar to a 22lr.

If I had a need I wouldn't hesitate to do this myself. You might find info on this at TFL, or Cast Boolits websites.

Wrong, .30 WCF is the original name for .30-30.  Marlin and others labeled guns and ammo .30-30 to keep from putting their competitor's trademark on their products.

Given that, there were in the day reduced loads for "gallery" and small game, sometimes called "miniature" loads.

1.  The cartridge is the same.

2.  Not that I know of.

3.  It would be a routine handloading project.  Lyman has data for such light loads and Ed Harris did a lot of work on them.  Modifying factory loads would not be any simpler.

4.  There are chamber inserts that would let you shoot .32 pistol and revolver ammo or .30 carbine in a .30-30 but they are not usually real accurate.

5.  Not much.  Main match CAS rifles must shoot revolver calibers.  The occasional side match might use such a light load but most tend to the higher side of cast bullet velocity.

Thank you  to all of you who have responded! Terrific info from each!  You have helped me better understand, thank you! Your responses have me re-thinking  my questions and now I'm  thinking this:

1) Although used to harvest dear, moose, etc, Is it generally recognized that the 30-30 cartridge is considered  a 'short range' cartridge?

2) Is there a general census that the 30-30 cartridge, gives effectively 32-20 performance?

3)  could simply using a 30-30 casing, and a 86- 115 gr.  bullet, and using pistol powder,  suffice as the small game (rabbit, and squirrel, and coyote etc.)  'short range cartridge') I'm seeking, and give respectful performance say? Would the bullets need to be resized?

4) Would pistol powder be best to use?
would the cartridge or bullet need to be cannelured?

5)  If I used a chamber insert to fire 32 pistol or .30 pistol ammo in the 30-30 lever,  each round would have to be inserted by hand correct?

6) Seeing how I'm a novice/ beginner re loader, who is actually contemplating reloading just to have this round I'm dreaming of, and one who has no reloading equipment, no bullet molds, no experience, etc. might it be better for me to find some one who reloads 30-30, to load the low power rounds for me? I do have plenty of empty 30-30 casings. I wonder where I would look for such an individual and what it might cost to have say 20 or 30 rounds made?

Thank you, I look forward to reading your informative reply.

1 kinda, but the new gummy tip bullets have helped, and the 3030 will shoot further effectively than most people think.

2 3030 is much more powerful than a 32-20, but it can be loaded down to 3220 power

3 yes and i am not sure what you are asking about resizing bullets

4 yep,it works great. Bullseye, unique, and titegroup all are good at this, I am sure there are others as well

5 not sure, but I wouldn't fool with them

6 Just start reloading, its not rocket surgery. Back before internet, i learned it all out of a book

No need for all of that. All are welcome here, we just have forum rules to follow. No harm, no foul.
