wanttolearn
hi, does anyone know where i can get a ,581 in x 40 thread cutting die? i checked brownells and they're really expensive. its something i'll likely only ever use once. if i have to i'll purchase it there (they're a great company) but hopeing to find other options. thanks
BeerBaron
I can often find cheap tools on eBay but you sometimes get screwed on the quality. Unfortunately some of the specialist gun smith taps and dies (and cutters for that matter) just aren't mainstream enough to be cheap. Try ebay but otherwise you might have to pay the $$ at Brownells. Can
So I looked up.581-40 threads in my machinist hand book it looks like it's not an kind of standard thread. So it will be a special order type thing. However. I would try to see of some of the large machine tool suppliers would be able to get you one. Try calling msc or western tools or some company like that rather than getting them from a company that specializes in gun stuff who I'm shure marks the prices up quite a bit. www.mscdirect.com www.westtool.com/default.aspx www.blackhawkid.com www.swifttool.com I'm not affiliated with any of these but these are typically the company's used by the machine shops in my area. RecoilJunkie
I'll see if I can find the link, but there was a company that leased out gunsmithing tools. I had a guy want an off the wall chamber and I didn't want to buy the reamer and gauges so I rented it from them. They carried other stuff and might have something like that. what is it for? do you have the option of enlarging the hole to a more common size? theWacoKid
When I needed an 11/16-40 die and the normal places I looked weren't working I searched on Amazon and scored.
JonSnow
http://www.4-dproducts.commight be what kylelee is talking about but I don't think they have comp dies. I bought an adjustable one off amazon although I haven't tried it yet. Edited June 6, 2016 by JonSnow
Braxton1
It may just be cheaper to have a machinist cut those threads on a lathe.
Can
You can get better / stronger threads by getting them ground and thread rolled than cutting them on a lathe and probably for comparable cost. Edited June 9, 2016 by Can
