EAA Witness EGT Open 9mm info?

Welcome to the forum, and yes BeerBaron and Kneelingatlas and the rest will soon show up with bundles of knowledge.

From my limited understanding, they are very good guns, but abusively loud and make sure to get a 38 super one because they bleed so much gas with all those holes.

Good luck!

The Tanfo Open gun in 9 major is a bit more difficult to work with do to not as many load options making major with all of those barrel ports, but it can be done.

The other issue is the availability of a dedicated 9mm 170mm big stick. You can have one welded up though until a better option comes along. Some guys are able to run there 9's in there 38 Super big sticks.

There is another guy on here also that builds his own Tanfoglio Open guns in 9 major and 38 SC. He builds them using the Limited Tanfo platform, less barrel porting. a real good guy named gennaro. You can see his stuff in the Tanfoglio porn thread. Also , Welcome to the forums.

Indeed, I'm big fan of 9 major, but not of the factory Gold Team; too many holes and not enough comp. You can make major with a 9mm GT (easier with a 38), but it's blasty, hard in the hand and hard on the gun. I really enjoy this one I made from a Limited:

Thank you all for your input. I'm now on the fence. Does it kick really bad even in 38 with any kind of powder used to meet major? Also if I or should I say can I replace Comp on 9 barrel that has one port and also have another hole drilled by a Smith help? Thanks all for the Welcomes.

If you're not afraid to have some gunsmithing done I would get a Limited 9mm to start. Just looking at Oak Hill the Gold Team is $1,800 and the Limited is $1,100. I did a build using the second barrel from a GT with a bored out comp and fewer holes:

It was an improvement, but the two port comp is just not enough. The three port comp pictured above is a big improvement and it's a factory unit available from Eric Grauffel for ~160 USD; the 6" plain barrel to go with it can be had for ~$210 from EAA. Then you can drill holes until you're satisfied.

I have a limited 9mm top end I would like to turn into a open setup. Question just to make sure I'm understanding the process. The barrel I need to purchase is the 6 inch straight barrel from Eaa? And so then with the comp on t works out of the limited slide I guess. My other question is I see Eric Grauffel shop has two comps you can buy. One with 2 holes and some poppets, and the 3 hole version. Which one is recommended? Thanks for any insight.

Correct, get the 6'' inch straight barrel from EAA.

Cut it and thread it , thread is 15mm X 0.75 pitch.

Get the 3 port Eric Grauffel Cone/Comp.

Leave enough clearance between the comp and front of the slide so they don't make contact upon lock-up.

Yep that's right. You will need to cut the 6inch barrel to length then thread it and crown it.

I'd suggest the 3 chamber comp. then add any popple holes to the barrel. The smaller 2 chamber one with the 4 popple holes is what they use on the v12 gt. it works 'ok' but has 8 extra popple holes in the barrel to support it. The 3 chamber comp with just 3-4 popple holes in the barrel is a nicer setup. Especially if you're going to shoot 9mm.

For the op: If you want an out of the box solution I'd suggest the v12 gold team in super. With powder like 3n38 they are a flat shooting gun (albeit very loud). If you are willing to tinker a bit with a custom comp/barrel setup then 9 will be fine. But for the factory gt super is really the way to go.

One thing I always forget to tell people (I only remember today because I did it last night) is that you must also grind/mill off the lower corners of the barrel to get it inside the front of a Limited slide, some fitting of the breech might also be required, here's a picture:

Awesome info. Am I able to get 30 round mags? If so where?

http://highercapacity.us/

Bill will cut two tubes to length and weld them together

VR4145.

Bill does a great job welding up a couple of magazines for you to make a big stick out of.

However , from what I understand, for the Tanfoglio guns, the magazines will still Not be capable of holding 30 Rounds.

Reason being they have to fit in the 171.25 USPSA guage that Bill uses to make them legal for competition use.

Bill will recommend to you to use the factory follower , and give up one or two rounds so the mags have a higher reliability and function better. That would put you at or around 26 or 27 , even 28 with a Gramms spring and follower.

I don't think the 30 round magazines for the Tanfo platform are here yet. Hopefully in the near future.

Bill is a really good guy and does a tremendous job welding mags together for competition shooters.

I have a 9mm big stick from Bill made from two Mecgar K9s which held 30 +1 using a Grams follower and ten coil spring, the spring wore out pretty quickly and now I've been messing around with it trying to get it to run reliably again. #openproblems

That's the problem , Reliability.

I know someone that had two big sticks using 9mm Mec-Gar mags welded up buy Bill, and he was really happy with his work.

But Bill told him these will not hold 30 rounds, and if you were to get 30 in them, the reliability would not be there.

I trust Bill to be honest when it comes to the magazines he's building and what he recommends, and all his stuff he builds fits in the USPSA guage for legal use in a match.

For me personally, do I want a 30 round mag that is Not 100% reliable when the stage or match is on the line ?

Or a mag that runs a few less rounds and works every time.

Always take the gun that's working , then you have a chance at winning.

Not here to offend, JMHO.

Again I have not yet heard of a 30 round 100% reliable magazine for the Tanfoglio platform.

It would be great to have them though. That's why we are all constantly trying different things to make our equipment better.

And it seems open guns require the most effort when it comes to getting longevity and consistent reliability out of them.

But how I do so enjoy shooting them.

Originally close. The spring goes into the cavity but the bullets wouldn't. So the 170 got the same as the 140.

Working on enlarging it and still having grip on the mag. No wobble.
