TANFARM
I'm trying to work up a minor match load for my STI 2011. My last load was 3.6 grns. Of Vih N320 with 147 Montana gold CJM. I loaded to 1.15 COL. My 5 chrono strings averaged 876..... With lows of 850 to highs of 918. I really do NOT want to increase my charge beyond 3.6 grains . Will DECREASING my COL help increase my averages ...giving me a better margin over Minor factor minimum of 875??? Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated !!!.....this was a very comfortable and accurate load in my pistol. Thanks!,
Nimitz
things that effect PF are bullet weight, powder charge & COL so you could decrease it but shorter bullets tend to have feed issues over longer ones ... that's why you here the rule of thumb when making a new load of: first determine the longest COL you can use and still pass the 'plunk' test and then figure out an appropriate powder charge to get the PF & accuracy you want , assuming a specific bullet weight ... Hi-Power Jack
Have to agree with Nimitz ^^^^^ But, your current load seems adequate, to me - if the lowest velocity you get is 124.8 PF, I think you're safe. Don't believe you can get into too much trouble, on the other hand, by slowly shortening your OAL - using a chrono, of course . Go to 1.14" and see what that does to velocity - and then keep dropping the OAL until you get where you'd like to be - no harm in that if you do it slowly/cautiously with a chrono. Miranda
I am not recommending you do this...yet what is the reason you do not want to increase the powder? the VV load table says 3.8 powder upper limit with a shorter OAL. You should be safe going up a bit. so I am curious. and like the others here say, shorter OAL should get the FPS up a bit. miranda
TANFARM
Thank you for the input !!......I'm going to try a COL reduction to 1.148 and re-chrono.....shorter length might help, with a better cushin on FPS......appreciate the help........ 9x45
1.150 -1.148 = .002" That's the typical +/- variation of a progressive loader. You need to drop at least .010" and check the OAL with full stations on the press. Also use the same head stamp for chrono.
