Have and have had 1911s in 45 and 9 so familiar with the platform.

In 9mm to use as my example most come with 12 lb recoil springs and most of us who compete go to 9 or 10. Now in 40 Wolff lists the norm as a 18, yet all I have read shows most use 12s. Taking into account PF we use compared to factory why such a wide spread but not in 9? When both are high pressure rounds.

Can't speak for Wolff, but STI recommends a 14 lb spring in their 5" .40 guns. From their FAQ:

Q: What is the recoil spring weight in my gun?

A:

  • Compensated pistols 8 pounds
  • 5″ 9mm guns 10 pounds
  • 5″ .40 S&W guns 14 pounds
  • 5″ .45 ACP guns 18 pounds
  • 6″ 9mm guns 8 pounds
  • 6″ .40 S&W guns 12 pounds
  • 6″ .45 ACP guns 14 pounds

I don't know if this helps but my stock Colt .38 Super Auto seemed to come with a #14 spring which worked with a variety of factory and minor PF loads. I am now using a #9 spring with a Dawson aluminum guide rod/buffer for minor PF loads. The gun cycles smoothly and so far no reliability issues.

what spring weight would you go down to if switching from .40 major to minor in a 1911????

I would hazard a guess that if you are right around the 130-135 range to go with what is recommended in 9mm (10# or possibly a 12#).
