Tactical Solutions 2211 trouble shooting

Hey guys,

I bought one of these a while back as a trainer for my STI trojan. I've put probably 1500 rounds through it so break in should be complete.

In nearly every mag I get a fail to feed in both my trojan and my double stack edge. I use tacsol mags in both. Same kind of problems in both kits.

It either doesnt seat the round fully in the chamber so I have to push the slide home or it gives me a 3 point jam where it jams on the top of the chamber, feed ramp and bottom of breach face. The 3 point jam requires me to dump the mag to rectify it.

These kits seem fairly popular and some people have expensive race guns built around them and most say their conversion eats anything.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to achieve this kind of reliability? I need to buy 3 more mags to compete in an upcoming steel challenge event but I'm wary about spending another $300 on it only to have jams at the match when a ruger 22/45 is around $400 and should be spot on.

I'm in Australia so gunsmiths are few and far between and nobody I know has the same kit.

Thanks,
Dan

It has been years since I had the metal TacSol mags, so I don't remember my exact issues with them but I do remember I hated them.

I sold them and got these: STI mags

These work much better and are less than half the price. Depending on your gun you MAY need to modify them just a bit. I modify mine anyway so that they hold 18 rounds.

Dan. Pull your barrel and look down the chamber. See if there is a ring of gunk in the front of the chamber. Sometimes there is a sharp edge due to the barrel liner on the back of the barrel. Polish that area, but don't take any material away. Also hand chamber rounds and eject them, seeing if there is any marking on the bullet. I have seen the extractor cut on the barrel push into the chamber, and mark the bullet. A few minutes and a round file fixes this up.

Last, make sure your hands/thumbs don't ride the slide. Most of my friends have went to the Swenson shielded safeties and their malfunctions went away.

Hope this helps....It is a great unit and when you get it figured out it will give you years of pleasure!

In addition to what Doug commented, I found that at about every 500 rounds or so the .22 chambers are gummed up. Use JB bore and use a good brass brush and chuck up in a power drill. Only work the chamber area. Be sure to clean out the JB. .22's build up a shellac that is pretty tough. Simple cleaning solutions aren't strong enough. Hopes this helps, .22's build up a lot gunk.

Are you using two separate .22 conversion uppers, one for each frame or the same conversion kit on two different frames? If you are using the same kit on two frames, make sure the barrel is centered in the frame when you tighten down the barrel. I ran into a problem when one of the frames I was using was cut wider for the barrel foot than another frame. Sometimes when I used the frame with the wider cut it would work OK, but other times it would be malfunctions galore because the barrel would not be centered in relation to the breachface. I align the barrel to breachface by chambering an aluminum dummy round, I think it is an A-Zoom Action Proving Dummy, then tightening down the barrel with the dummy round in the chamber.

Any ideas where I can buy these from that will ship overseas? It's hard to get stuff sent to Aust. :( Brownells is good for things under $100 but they don't list the advantage arms gear.

Thanks Doug, There is a sharp edge between the ramp and barrel there that seems to clog up by trimming the projectiles down. I will give it a polish. No marks on bullets I chamber and eject. It does it when I'm not riding the slide, I was hoping that was all I was doing.

I gave it a good clean last night which was more thorough than previous efforts. I had to pick lead out of the muzzle end with a pick. My version has sort of a shroud that hangs over the barrel by half an inch, Im guessing to meet length requirements and it was full of lead that was hard to get off.

1 top end between 2 guns. I don't have to tighten the barrel down. It's just held in with the slide stop, the guide rod doesn't tighten on this version.

Only half the slide moves, the sights are fixed to the barrel.

Thanks for all the help guys. Hopefully I can get it working good in time for steel challenge next month.

I slowly chambered rounds last night after the deep clean and it seemed to function better except when I had to hold the slide stop down to chamber the last round. This would give me the 3 point jam every time so maybe that is mag related. Also once the round wouldnt chamber completely, it appeared that the round below it got onto the feed ramp at the same time so the top round got wedged against it and the top of the chamber.

Sounds like it could certainly be mag-related or maybe even mag catch-related. Do you have Dawson posi-locks for mag catchs? Maybe holding the mag a hair high? Just thinking in text...

Just an update.

I gave the kit the clean of its life last week and took the sharp edge off the barrel just above the feed ramp. I also didn't oil between the .22 slide and the barrel like I have been. Someone mentioned to run it dry so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I ran 200 40 grain RN mini mags through it this morning with 0 failures. :goof:

After that I got through 15 rounds of the bulk remington stuff I had before getting a failure to feed. After that I got a ftf every few rounds. It seems the case of the bullet gets stuck in the chamber and won't allow the slide to close. It might just be that the remington stuff is filthy and clogging up the chamber or the cases are out of spec.

Ordered 3 more mags so I'll just make sure I clean it well and use the mini mags before the match in a few weeks.

Thanks for your help guys.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had one for a while and had a lot of problems too. It went back to Tacsol for tuning. The mags were a pain. I too had to soften the sharp edge at the chamber as in the case of Mini Mags it was shaving off the coating which would pile up at the chamber. Mini Mags have a waxy coating that I eventually gave up on. I settled on CCI Blazers without the coating and they worked best. I run a Nelson conversion now which I find superior. Larry Nelson and his company are super people who will help you no end. The Nelson mags are 1/3 of what the Tacsols cost me.
