jkrispies
So, I'm now out of my primary powder and my backup powder for 9mm! I have a buddy who is willing to trade me a pound or two of HP38 for some rifle powder. I have exactly zero experience with HP38 (or Win 231 which I guess is it's clone???) so any info is appreciated. I have found a couple recipes for HP38, but not as many as I'd like for proper cross-referencing... and I don't think I've found any for 147gr. Perusing some of the posts here at benos, though, it does sound like HP38 is a well-used powder in in 9mm so maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. Basically, I just want a good Minor 9mm load that will get me through this powder crisis. I do have some 147gr moly coated lead bullets on the way to me, but if this powder won't work for that bullet weight, I'd like to know so I can get a more appropriate bullet-- no preferences at this point other than wanting some workable ammo till I can get back to my usual!!! Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
RDA
Hodgdon HP-38 and Winchester 231 are exactly the same powder, not close, not similar, not a clone, they are the exact same powder with different labels. Search is your friend: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=171781 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=169917 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=196338 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=113540 Those were just a few I found searching for 147 and 231 from the first page of results. polizei1
There's a TON of people that use HP38/Win231 for 9mm minor, myself included. It's a fantastic powder. I believe I was using ~3.5gr for my 147gr loads. I use 4.5gr for my 124gr loads at 1.140", so I would start at 3.2gr and work your way up. Hi-Power Jack
I would start at 3.2gr and work your way up. +1. WW231 is excellent. Start around 3.2 and 1.125" OAL, and you should have good results.
450AK
These guys are right it is a awesome powder for nine miner. The loads I run in my open gun when shooting steel challenge is 4.7 grains with a 115 grain extream HP or a 124 extream and 4.5 grains of W231/HP38. ZackJones
I ran some of my brother's loads through my M&P Pro with 40-to-9 conversion barrel and it was very soft shooting. He was using a 147g Berry with 3.6g of 231 at 1.155. Average PF was 128.
jkrispies
With the 3.2 starting load on a 147, is that all with plated/FMJ, or has anybody tried it with lead? Thanks for the assistance! Edited July 30, 2014 by jkrispies
polizei1
After talking to BBI, they suggested a 10% reduction for their coated lead (vs. FMJ), so the 3.2gr is for FMJ. With lead, I would start at 3gr.

nelly
Here's my 2cents- Really like HP38, loaded 115gr FMJ RN (Precision Delta) with 4.7grs of HP38, Sm Pist Primers OAL 1.125 and ran it thru two different Glocks without issue( G-17 & G19 ). Easy shooting.I was turned on to HP38 by a buddy who told me I would really like it and he was right.
