wooddog
I have an older Bushmaster (before they were sold) that has a round aluminum hand guard. How the hell do I get it off? Should twist off, Correct? I tried a strap wrench but nothing moved.
wooddog
The reason I am taking it off is that the bolt will not go into battery (think a blown primer is jammed in the bolt) I cannot take it apart. Tried from rear, took off everything including recoil spring tube, NO Go. Looks like only way is to remove barrel but ... hand guard is stopping me. alma
Like a military style hand guard. Pictures would help.
Dan Sierpina
A large pipe wrench should do it. Wrap the handguard with about 10 wraps of duct tape if you don't want the wrench to dig in. It's just threaded on, when you put it back on, use some grease or anti sieze compound.
Stlhead
Buy it a nice dinner, then possibly a movie or some dancing, then soft music, candles and hot oil?
wooddog
Thanks Dan, I will give it a try, if I mess up the hand guard will just have to replace it with a firebird I guess
Dan Sierpina
Did you pull the gas tube out? I don't know if Bushmaster ever had them, but DPMS uses 2 piece tubes on some guns. The front unscrews from the actual nut, then you can use a regular barrel nut wrench.
Bryan 45
I've taken off a couple DPMS two piece tubes. A little heat really helped break the tube off the nut.
GM2B
A rubber oil filter wrench, Heat gun or lightly torch it the torch might discolor the handgaurd
cas
^. That sounds like what I'd try. You know I have one on on of my guns, but it can't remember if its one piece or two. But them I used it on one upper for years where it wasn't even tight, the gas tube was the only thing keeping it on. Did this happen while you were shooting? (Just want to be sure it's not an oopsie with the firing pin installation and the cam pin isn't just out of place.)
mdschappell
I have a similar handguard... it is one piece and just threads on. Mine came loose once, and I could twist it slightly back and forth until it was stopped by the gas tube. Even though it was only slightly loose, it destroyed accuracy until I got it tightened back down.
TA338
Why don't you open the pins holding lower and upper together ? This way you could separate lower and upper. You should use a upper receiver clamp to prevent destroying it. If you just use brute force on then free float tube you might bend and destroy the upper.
