Best Gun for GSSF - Know nothing about Glock's

First, I think I have fired a Glock 2 or 3 times in my life so I know very little about them.

I have a Glock certificate and I think I want to shoot some GSSF matches. Talked to a friend that I shoot with that has a lot of Glocks and his suggestion was a G-30SF. His reasoning is that I can shoot just about any GSSF division with that gun. Looking at the rules he is correct. I am hesitating because I am not sure that I can shoot that gun all that well. Small gun, .45 ACP, me a 1911 / 2011 guy. I have an XDs that I can shoot pretty well but it adds a second or two to my plate rack times.

Would I be better off with a G17, or some other model, that would be easy and cheep to shoot and limit me to a class or two less or the G-30 that would get me in a lot of classes but would be harder to shoot well?

I am a competitive B Limited shooter and have been shooting for about 3 years. I am set up to reload 9mm, .40, and .45.

I would not pick a Glock based on the GSSF matches alone. Pick the one that you think you will enjoy and shoot the best/most. GSSF matches have two major groups...newer shooters and a small group of specialists. B class will likely put you in the upper third, but not at the top of the heap, regardless of which Glock you shoot in whatever division it fits into.

i went through the same choice when I won my first GSSF match this year (with borrowed gear). I shot a g 34/35 (whichever the 9mm is) and a g20 in 45. I'm a 1911/2011 guy myself and the 45 barked pretty hard for me. As a B shooter, I got grouped in with the new people so I won my division, and came in second in another. I would personally pick a Glock 17. It allows you to shoot everything but subcompact, and do pretty well in all of them. Competition, stock, open, all that good stuff. It also seems like a great all-around HD, truck, range, 3 gun blaster as well.

I'm waiting on my Gen 4 17 to show up since it has extra mags and a better grip set up. I did a similar search a few months ago here so a better searcher should be able to pull it up.

Get the Glock 17. It'll work in Amatuer, Competition, Master Stock and Unlimited, (But don't enter the last two unless you just want practice). Yes a 30 SF will work for everything, but it will only do one division well. The Glock 17 is also just a great all around gun.

I am leaning pretty hard towards the G17 Gen4. It fits in well with what I have (more what I don't have, which is a full size 9mm duty gun) and I think it would be more fun to shoot.

I am assuming that the Gen4 would be the choice as there is no up charge for it.

It would be nice to be able to shoot all divisions with one pistol, but i think it will be hard to be competitive in most of them with a subcompact 45. I would lean towards getting a 17. I think whether you get a gen 3 or gen 4 is just preference. I have a couple of both and they work just as good. I like the gen 4 more mainly because of the frame being textured more. I don't feel like i need to use tape with it. Not a fan of the new spring assembly though.

Depends on the match, its sometimes hard to shoot all the classes and get all the stages in. G17 will get you in most classes. if your not use to shooting a short barrel (G30, G26, G27, etc) I wouldn't go that route unless its your second/other gun.

In general I'd go with a G17 since you'll most liekly will be shooting the more common divisions. As you said the G29, G30, and G39 are legal in all divisions but maybe not the best one to use for all divisions. I have done well shooting my G30 in MSub and Sub, often better than the G17. Without considering anything else the G21 would be my choice for Master Stock, Competion, and Heavy Metal and the G30 for Major Sub and Sub, and the G17 for Unlimited.

I used a G22 for a while and won 5 amature divisions with it and I bet one of very few GSSF shooters to use and win with a .40.
