Dead Buff
Can anyone help. The company I work for has over this weekend implemented some new internet server rules. For one thing I can not access any gun related sites any more - even BE.com. To get to the forums I now go to the direct address....and this route sucks. Is there a way to access some websites - like BE, Glock and many other gun stuff sites - without the server knowing? Going via a site which displays whatever you want but the server doesn't see? Greg G
Try this link they have worked for me in the past in the same situation http://www.space.net.au/~thomas/quickbrowse.html
Dead Buff
The server blocks that site - seem to be really going into the " We'll give you the net, but make it impossible to use" thingy...
cpty1
Sometimes you get there thru Google or another search engine. Some firewalls block certain sites, but you can still visit those sites by linking to them thru a search engine.
robomanusa
there has been many attempts of isp's blocking FQDN's and IP #'s, most of these attemtps at the isp level block by IP address and as a result end up blocking 1000's of legitimate websites in the process just trying to block 1 single porn site. This practice has been proven to violate the 1st ammendment and is illegal.
robomanusa
woops, I just re-read your post and overlooked the MY COMPANY part, lol since its internal it may just be a script your Internal techs are using to catch and re-direct domain names. Do you know if the techs implemented any IE upgrades or not?
D.Hayden
The usually block them at the proxy server. Not a local script. But the IT people usually know most of the anonymous servers. The link above just lists a few of them like: http://www.proxyweb.net http://www.snoopblocker.com http://webwarper.net These probably won't work for you either. Do a search for anaonymous proxies, you might find one they haven't got on thier list yet.
robomanusa
The company I worked for up until today implemented a script instead of proxy server as its way cheaper, maybe you will luck out and thats all your company did. Try using another web browser...ie..mozilla http://www.mozilla.org/
Rob Boudrie
Check to see if your company has blocked outgoing connections to your home IP address (assuming you are on a high speed connection), and configure a forwarding port on your router. You can then use windows desktop sharing, or VNC (www.realvnc.com) to do the browsing from your home system, and view the desktop from work. Ron Ankeny
Before you go circumventing your company's security efforts, you might want to consider any potential fall out. In some organizations, tinkering around with network traffic is grounds for dismissal.

Shooter Grrl
I used to get around the blocks at work by typing in the direct IP address. However, I have no idea what it is now that we're on ibforums.com
mcoliver
How about doing a reverse DNS lookup to get the IP add?

Dead Buff
Thanx for the help...will see what can be done. They did upgrades on the internet switch/server. Two different blocks: company prohibited and non-work related. The non-work related stuff is open during non-working hours the other stuff never... They dumped ALL gun related sites (ipsc.org, brianenos.com, glock.com, winchester.com, sapsa.co.za, doublealpha, ericgrauffel, jeff coopers commentaries, etc...name 'em all) into the company prohibited. It seems as if certain words are identified on the pages for the blocking rules. for them gun = sex I must assume
Patrick Sweeney
Thread drift warning! I only wish gun=sex, since I'm a gun writer! "Sure send me two redheads, a blond and a Korean, next day air." Imagine the testing procedure!
Dead Buff
.....two redheads, a blond and a Korean, next day air." Imagine the testing procedure! Some fetish... But that thought still does nothing to keep me around here....altough some might be happy to see me go....I guess that by next week my access to BE will disappear unless I find a way to keep it up.... Patrick Sweeney
Sorry if that didn't help. My brother spent some time in the computer tech field, and once had the sorry job of riding herd on the company computer internet access protocols. From his recounting of the experience, I can tell you a few things; "If the staff worked as hard at their jobs as they did at evading the system limits, we'd all be hip-deep in bonuses." Quote from my brother. People will try. They will fail, because 1) someone is assigned to keep them away from certain sites, and 2) that someone will take it in the neck if they don't keep you out. Don't expect bonuses or promotions if you figure out a way to evade the system limits, unless you immediately report it. Then expect to get the job of keeping everyone away from certain sites, and incur the wrath of your fellow employees. Someone high up feels that the staff is wasting company time cruising various superfluous sites. As long as they feel that way, you're blocked. Asking for exemptions for this or that won't help. Two things will help: a new job, or a new boss. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll have to visit the Enosverse from home.

Rob Boudrie
Many web servers now days use name based url resolution, where the name passed by your browser is used to resolve which of several websites you are visiting - so in many (perhaps most) cases, using the numeric IP will not get you to the web site.
