twister
Is it possible to change a 7 shot L frame to a 6 shot? Thanks for any help,Dave.
Toolguy
The short answer is yes. If you're lucky and the cylinder fits the frame and barrel all you have to do is change the cylinder and hand. If not lucky ( about a 50 - 50 chance) then you have to fit the cylinder.
Hi-Power Jack
why?
twister
Because I'd like a 5" l frame to compete with. The only way I can get one is to build it myself.
granderojo
I was able to make it work w/out any fitting problems. I started with a 7 shot (686+) and found a nice 6 shot cylinder for a good price and it works. Timing and clearances are all good. I needed a 6 shot gun for one of the games. NOSAJ19
I have a S&W 686 5" 7 shot. It was a great shooter as a 7 shot. I had the cylinder replaced with a 6 shot cylinder & it was terrible. It required an experienced gunsmith to get it just right. It's now fantastic & a keeper. I'm considering fitting a 4" barrel. Cheers, Ando. Toolguy
I'm sure you'll like the 4" a lot better. You can send me that junky old 5" barrel.
toothguy
I'm sure you'll like the 4" a lot better. You can send me that junky old 5" barrel. And I will be gracious enough to accept the discarded 7 shot cylinder.
westczek
It is very doable. I swaped a 6 shot cyliner from one gun into my 686 plus, worked without issue. I even fitted a new from the factory 6 shot cyliner. A small but sharp file and some patience is all that is needed. Westczek
Jim Watson
My six shot cylinder dropped right into my seven shot gun, timing, gap, and all. So I ordered a loose cylinder off the www. IT didn't fit. So I coughed up the money to have S&W furnish and fit one. I have way more in the gun than I will ever get out of it, but it is a good shooter.
