PistolPete
I'm getting an open top end for my SV in .38 super and was just curious if you can buy .38 super factory ammo. I don't recall ever seeing it. Or, will I always have to reload it? thanks, Pete
kimel
I have seen factory ammo for sale at various times over the years but my understanding is that it isn't loaded hot enough to work the comp in an open gun.
stingerjg
Yes, Remmington sells a 38 super +P load. It will work in you gun, but even at 'thier' +P loading it will not make major. If i remember right its not even that close.
George
I tried a box of factory (Remington I believe) .38 super 130gr FMJ back when I first got into a super and it gave me just over a 150 PF if I remember correctly. Call it about equal to a +P 9x19 loading. -- Regards,
texasag93
Yes, but even +P is pretty weak compared to major loads in open guns. I have seen them for sale at Wal Mart. TXAG
kdj
Corbon make a load that would work most Open guns, I think. Their loads have PFs of 167 and 181, using the factory figures! Kevin
ong45
amscor sells .38 super that they claim will make major. James
BSeevers
The 130 gr Armscor I shot was going around 1150 fps
stingerjg
The 130 gr Armscor I shot was going around 1150 fps that would be 149.5 PF
BSeevers
The reason I tried it is was selling for $6 a box. I would retire the Dillion for that! Even with the heavy bullet.
blackdragon
The Armscor standard 38 super is designed for guns with unsupported chambers. What you need is the 38 super rimless IPSC loaded ammo. It is a little longer and a lot hotter it will make major in a standard comp gun, such as mine, if you have the man holes in your barrel you need to chrono it. Kingman
IF you need to buy ammo, I know a couple people that will load ammo for you major in just about any caliber you want. One of my friends just picked some 124's up major for $150 on his brass.
Bruce
Aguila sells .38 super ammo, have not tried it in an open gun. Georgia Arms sells .38 super, same story there. I have shot both, and both ran flawlessly in my STI...the GA stuff I had was very, very accurate.
Tokarev
Natchez Shooter's Supply has Remington 130 FMJ ammo on special for $8.47 a box. That's a good price for new ammo with nice nickled brass.
