Hi, I'm ordering a new sit trubor 38super, what options to get?

Just about to put in an order for a standard STI Trubor in 38super blued. Want to try my hand at open platform. Hoped to find out what options to get or stay away from. As some background, i've been shooting production for a while and generally shoot a 2.25 lb trigger 1911 format, i'm right handed, right eye dominant.

Thought about getting the heavy STI magwell as i generally prefer a heavier gun and am a bit recoil sensitive, as well as 2 lb trigger, polished ramp, extended magazine release. Never had a slide racker, are there drawbacks to this option? I'd love to get thoughts and recommendations as to which options to get, which to stay away from, preferred brands etc. thanks

Get a slide racker...gives you a built-in kickstand for table starts and makes it easier to rack the slide, especially on unloaded gun starts. Also try an Aftec 9mm/38 SC extractor and shoot 38 Super Comp...better reliability and one more round in the big sticks.

go with super comp only if your ready to pay a little more for brass, and be prepared for times when folks may be out of super comp. i like shooting super comp, and i knew what i was getting into. theres honestly not much you need on your open gun. slide racker is just somethin you should have for the reasons above. extended mag release sounds good to have. i dont have one cause im too lazy to have it done by my smith. a good magwell is good. otherwise your good to go. once you get the gun, start testing bullets and powder, then shoot the snot out of it.

Coming from production myself, I'd suggest the 90 degree C-more mount. Quinn II is nice, as is Cheely's. It really makes the transition from iron to dot seamless. Get yourself a pair of 170 mags, and a pair of 140 mags. You won't need to run them all on your belt, but it's nice to have a backup ready to go. I usually start with a 170 in the gun, a 170 on the belt, and a 140 on the belt. For the mag guts, I like Grams spring and followers, and have been running the Dawson basepad, but I'm gonna try the Gram basepads. I think too many people get caught up in trying to get 30 or 31 rounds in a 170. If it's a long course, there's always room for a mag change, and coming from production...I'm sure you're used to mag changes.

The extended as in paddle mag release ? I didnt like too far back dug into my hand and I hit it. The plain round button is ok, I did go with an extra power mag catch spring.

I dont like STI's thumb safties. Too small. I use single sided large wilson combats. Stay with a conventional guide rod and spring, no recoil masters.

If I was ordering new I would go 9mm and either tune or have tuned some magazines.

The Trubore (my first open gun) is a pretty beefy gun so I don't know if you'll need the heavy mag well. I'd say try it as it comes and if needed add a heavy mag well later. I personally favor 38 Super Comp. I mark my brass and get most of it back. Lots of folks really love the sideways mounts. I think that's another personal preference thing. Try some of both styles from other shooters in your area and see which you like better. The gun should run (eject) with either mount if it's tuned right so it really just comes down to what you feel more comfortable with. Speaking of tuning the gun, you may consider ordering it from Dawson or Brazos and get their enhancement packages on it to make sure it runs 100%. That's what I did because I've read/heard of some STI guns straight from the factory that aren't 100%.

However, once you add the enhancement package to a Trubore, you're getting pretty close in price to a 'Yakuza' custom build from Akai Custom Guns. I'd suggest you give Shay a call and get a quote from him on what you're looking for. I'm sure he'll work with you on options to help fit your budget. His guns are ridiculously accurate, look awesome, run 100%, and his support is fantastic! Some of the fastest custom build times out there as well! Check out his vendor area here on the forums!

thanks everyone, that helped a lot. i think i'm going to stick with the original mag well, do the trigger and polish work and shoot it for a while then I'll have to find out which slide racker to get and who best to install it.

Mayer,

The best advice that many people have offered is to have a custom built 2011 Open gun.....done by Akai Custom Guns.... ask for Shay.

Open guns are called Race guns for a reason go to a specialist and order the best. Don't settle for off the shelf pre-built guns.

Pricing is about the same but you get a custom built gun.

I sent my slide to Matt Cheeley and he cut the slide and installed a ball detent Sidewinder...had the slide back within a week...and couldn't be happier.

Sorry to interrupt the thread, but,

Dirt, I've never shot a "custom race gun", but own two Tru-Bors.

Have you ever shot a Tru-Bor?

What is the difference? I haven't found out in four years.

Is the custom gun more accurate, does the dot move less? What

is the advantage to the custom gun?

I bought the TruBors because of the price difference and the

shipping speed - takes months to get a custom gun, and weeks to

get a TruBor.

Thanks,

Jack

There is nothing really that different, customs are generally better fitted with tighter tolerances and smoother actions, better triggers, etc. I have seen plenty of trubors that run and shoot great. The customs give better options for what you like: Safeties, grip mods already done, parts used for the build, custom slide lightening, and so on. There is also the build time to consider. You are the only one that can decide if the differences are worth it or not.

Before you order a custom with a really light slide shoot someone elses that is close to what you think you want. Not everyone likes the really light slides and how they shoot. I see a lot less, and more consistant, dot rise with my old major open gun than I do when I shoot other peoples extremely lightened slides. Although I agree they look a lot better they just do not shoot better for me.

Custom or pre-built....it's the Indian not the bow.

But you'd better believe that the chief's bow looks a lot different from the others.

I don't know if my Limcats shoot any better than a stock TruBor, but I do know that it's tuned exactly for me, as my wife's is tuned exactly for her.

Oh yeah, and they look pretty damned good too. Kind of like what I'd want if I ever become a chief.

I think the best advice is to find some guys here that are nearby, and shoot as many different guns as you can. If you're going to drop $3K to $6K on something,

I think it's worth driving a couple of hours and checking out what works best for you. If you're in Illinois, you're welcome to try mine.

Start a thread that says, "I'm in BFE and need help finding the right Open gun for me". You'll be surprised at the offers you get.
