judgecrater
Check out the photo of my M&P45. What are these for? They don't seem to have a purpose.

Derek Wallace
I know they used to stamp the frames with dots to mark the generation/run of the gun. It could be something similar?
Bevenue
I think it was on smith-wesson forum the other night. Someone asked the same question and it was to identify the machine it was machined on. Just what I heard. Not that I have first hand knowledge.
Sudden Death
Just guessing, locating points for a second step set-up machining ????
judgecrater
So do these dimples appear on your M&P as well? Same number and placement?
nathandewalt
I don't have any on mine but I have a pro 9.
GT1
I have three dimples on my 45 slide. Two far apart on one side and one on the other in the middle compared to the other two.
MarkCO
My 9Pro has them.
beastfrog
Simply to tell which machine made them.
Sin-ster
My 9 Pro and 45 FS both have them, although neither are the same-- nor the same as your picture. Beast's answer (and those like it) make the most sense.
jdphotoguy
Neither my 9L nor 40 M&P have them. I wonder if it's a method to shave off weight if the slide is out of spec Edited March 28, 2012 by jdphotoguy
Wilkenstein
Neither my 9L nor 40 M&P have them. I wonder if it's a method to shave off weight if the slide is out of spec That's what I always thought it was. My 9pro has them.
MGMorden
I can't remember the pattern, but my M&P 9L has similar dots as well.
Jhp147
I took a tour of S&W in 2007, I remember the guy talking about them when they were showing us the CAD machines cutting the slides. It seems like beastfrog's description or something like that was it, but I thought he mentioned something about measuring wear on the machines too. The main point the guy made about them were that they weren't any kind of secret code and he was tired of answering the question.,
