Franklin SR
I purchased 500 boattail round, I noticed the bullet (Hornady FMJ BT) fits on the case without Chamfering. Is this step still necessary? Thanks in advance. R-Bros_JLR
Necessary? Probably not, but I do it anyways.
gohuskers
Not necessary in my opinion but to each his own...
Powder Finger
Go ahead and seat some bullets, then look to see if any copper shaving is present. If it is decide if you think it's good for the bullet.
kamikaze1a
With BT bullets, the only time I chamfer is after trimming the case...but with flat base, it depends on the brass and bullet. A trial seating will tell you if you need to chamfer after each sizing.
Poppa Bear
Only when I trim cases.
anachronism
I feel it's important to prevent shaving the sides of the bullet during seating, even with boat tails. It's not a big deal, you could chamfer a hundred cases in a couple of minutes. My trimmer does it for me automatically now, inside & out. I've never met a piece of once-fired 223 brass that didn't need trimming anyway.
dauntedfuture
Only when you trim. If you are shaving bullets and they still shoot I would not worry too much; you could run into a risk where you shave a big chunk off if things are extreme and the round would not chamber.
