98 SE and disabling programs at startup

Recommended Posts

First : I am a computer idiot so speak slowly.

The problem :

I cannot run defrag or scan disk because something keeps writing to the drive.

" drive contents changed starting over " is the error message.

I use a NT 4.0 at work and can shutdown programs easily.

I cannot find a similar feature in 98 SE.

Nor can I find a method of determining which program is causing the problem.

How do you shut down a program you cannot find ?

Any help appreciated.

I am being driven nucking futz by this.

I got along with DOS much better.

That’s a fairly common problem in Win98. The “work around” is to start in “safe mode” and then scan disk and defrag. It’s been awhile (okay, a LONG while) but I THINK if you boot your computer and AS SOON as it start coming back up start tapping F8 and when it hit’s the right spot it’ll quit loading and give you the option of starting in safe mode. Back "in the day", we had an office full of computers that required this.

Good Luck,

Ed

All of the above answers are correct but there is another way ...

Search the net for a program called pview95.exe and it will handle the problem for you. It is a small program that shows EVERYTHING that is running and allows you to kill any running procedure. Particularly nice when you are remotely controlling a computer and need to kill a task ... the usual ctrl-alt-del will only make YOUR task manager come up. If you cannot find it, I can send it to you.

Lazy way:

ctrl-alt-del to bring up the the Close Program box

turn off EVERYTHING except Explorer and Systray

when that's done, ctrl-alt-del one more time to make sure & cancel

Start. Run. Type in Defrag. Choose drive. Hit OK.

Cold reboot when you're done.

PS - the F8 still works but the timing can be really tricky. Compac & other makers like to "dumb down" the display while booting up and you can miss a lot.
