Being called in to work

I got a call today requesting that I report to work on Midnight shift. I was on my way to the beach with plans to eat at my favorite restaurant. The gulf breeze blowing through a Tiki hut while drinking adult beverages and eating Fresh Apalachicola oysters and watching FSU play in the college world series.

I went and did my thing but it wasn't the same knowing I had to report to work tonight.

I was going to shoot the Match at East Alabama Gun Club in the morning but now that is a no go!

I feel your pain. I'm on call 24/7/365 unless I'm on vacation. Even though it doesn't happen that much, the mere chance, gives me a headache!

Me too... I find it impossible to relax when I am carrying the pager, which is 24/7/365 and has been for over 12 years.

I also a on call or report to work at my job. I'm lucky though because its shift work. As long as I don't pick up the phone I have nothing to worry about. Did you see you were called in. Yes but I didn't get the message until such and such time because I went out of town. No pagers for us, only by telephone.

I have yet to be made to report to work in almost 14yrs. Now if I'm at work and they need someone to work an extra shift at the prison then thats a different story. I have a ton of mandations under my belt. They will never catch me on my off days, ever.

I'm in the same boat as you. I work Administrative Shift. I'm the Range Master, Mon-Fri weekends and holidays off. Most of the place is on shift work. I'm on call by phone only too.

Guess who calls. One of my firearms instructors. A shooting buddy and Friend. So of course I answered.

He worked the shift with me and I reminded him all night that I was not taking any more of his phone calls.

As a matter of fact his number is blocked on my phone.

It is supposed to be 100 degrees, 95% humidity Monday. I think he may need to police some brassdevil.gif

I gotta throw my .02 in this one!

I too am on call 24/365. I try not to worry about it. I just figure if they call I will go. One nice thing is my supervision is very good and no one gets mad if you can't come. That said...here's how the past several days have gone.

I started nights (6pm-2am) on tuesday. At 4pm Tuesday I get called in for a baby death. (I'm a homicide detective). Work on that all night and then assist the other crew that got called in for the homicide. Go home at 2. Wednesday I go into work normal time and then get a homicide at 11pm. Work that until 8am. Then go directly to court where I stay until noon. I head home, sleep for 3 hours and go back to work. At 10:30pm Thursday I get another homicide and work that until 5:30am Friday. Head home again to try to sleep. At 9:30 fri morning they call me in again because my suspect has been arrested. I work on that whole mess straight through until 2am.

I am just now starting to feel normal...

I can also relate to the misery of holding the pager. Getting called in when your not expecting it makes a crappy job particularly more odious. Thankfully as of last Wednesday, when this happens in the future it wont nearly be as bad, but the suckage always remains...

I hate the cell phone here. I finally got one day mostly off to actually attend a shoot in May after having worked all day then driving all night to get to the match and showed up 15 min before shooters meeting. Cell phone kept going off the hook throughout the day. I about asked to have it placed on the rifle stage as a bonus target

I have worked 24 hr call for most of the last 20 yrs. Even on vacation I get calls. Sitting in a casino in Shreveport, I got a call looking for a unit on a drilling rig. It felt gd to tell them that I would be in after a few days if they could wait. I gave the call over to another supervisor and let them deal with it. We are off on call ever other weekend, I still have not figured it out. I just leave town and tell when I will be back.
