  1. I built a 9mm upper half on my SBR. 10" RRA barrel, CMMG ramped bolt, regular 5.56 upper and charging handle. I use a top-drop-in Hahn mag block, and I run either Metalform 32-rounders or modified UZI mags (including a 40-rounder and Frankenmag 63-rounder). The gun handles pretty much the same as my 5.56 rifles, but with more felt recoil due to the blowback system of operation. Here is a photo, and video of me running it in a match today:

Ive been thinking of getting a 9mm upper, but everytime I shoot one, I get surprised over how much they jump compared to my .223s.

Have you been playing around with bullet weights, comps and buffers at all? Wondering if you could get it smoother by using some really light bullets and a healthy scoop of really slow powder, or is there just too much moving mass to do much about it?

  2. PPC shooting teaches pure shooting fundamentals from many different shooting positions. You will become a better shooter in what ever shooting sport you combine it with. The time limits are generous to allow for the reloading of revolvers before speed loaders. When I shot PPC civilians were not allowed at the nationals but I heard they changed that.

According to the NRA rule book, you still need to be LE to participate in official events.

  3. I don't, but if you have an smart phone. You should be able to download the istrelok app and it will give you drops and you can scale targets onto the reticle.

I have that, but I want to know the thickness of the lines, the dots and all the other measurements of the reticle.

  4. I know I had one somewhere, but cant find it and google isnt very helpful either. The only thing I find are diagrams over the drops, but I want the full diagram with line/dot thickness etc. For some reason that reticle is missing in the technical spec doc on Swarovskis site as well

    Anyone have it laying around?

  5. I forget what match it was, but we had to engage a plate rack at about 40 yards with 00 buckshot. I would have switched my choke to a super full, but we had to shoot slugs on the same stage. Needless to say there were plenty of plates left standing by all competitors. Another vote for no slugs / buckshot.

A silly stage in one match shouldnt be the what slugs and buckshot are judged on. Voting no on silly stage design would be better ;)

Properly used they add a very interesting and challenging dimension to shotgunning/3gunning.

  6. The US State Department considers Jerry's Rifle CDs a security risk and put an export restriction on it :roflol:

Whats next banning Hollywood Action movies outside of the US? Making YouTube illegal? :goof:

I guess they will take away his passport. What if he competes internationally and someone watches :P

Did you happen to get the final determination from DDTC? I'm a little surprised that it wasn't determined to be EAR99, much like the Panteao DVDs.

    Maybe they watched the videos?

  7. Personally I prefer a reticle with a mil based tree for wind and elevation holds (like the BRT, or EBR-2 reticles) over a bullet drop based one. It just seems easier to learn the distances for the various mil marks rather than trying to tailor a load to match a certain BDC reticle.

What would you rather have in your favorite scope, mils or drops?

You don't have to tailor the load. If you know your dope, whether it is MOA or MIL, or SBR, you just correlate that to the right tick mark on the tree and press the shot.

Sure, but if my ammo doesnt line up with the calibrated reticle, I dont really see the point of a calibrated reticle?

Which is why I kinda prefer a mil based one, if I have to learn my dope for each tick, I'd rather have them spaced out evenly in mils rather than in a somewhat arbitrary fashion.

But yeah, not really a big deal either way.

  8. With Firebird hopefully releasing their all US built Tac12a1 later this year the supply of parts should be a thing of the past. It also sounds like it would be quite a bit cheaper than the R&R and hopefully with better QA, Jim will be able to make a high performing comp for it.

The Rhino Arms AR10 based gun also looks really interesting, though quite a bit pricier, but I havent seen a single video of it running yet, so hard to tell if its vaporware or a serious contender yet.

Personally, with potentially two exciting new products slated for release later this year I would wait a few more months before deciding. I'll be following both closely to see if its worth upgrading/switching.

If you really need one now, see if you can find both an MKA and Saiga and try them out next to each other. I have owned a Saiga and currently own two Firebird MKAs, so I obviously prefer the MKA, but I'd say that the choice is more personal preference than anything. Both have pros and cons and either one will most likely serve you well.

  10. Well that is sorta, kinda not really the same. I'm not talking about accessories. In all divisions we allow detachable box magazine fed weapons as far as the pistol and rifle are concerned. There was never such a choice with the shotgun when 3-gun was started, so we were left with the tube fed bird gun. Now that there is such a choice the powers to be decided it should be an "open" gun based only on the fact it has a detachable box magazine. It's inconsistent with the firearms in all other divisions. I would have preferred to see a cap on magazine capacity (like 10 rds) and retain all other stipulations of TO. If the MKA and Saiga were around 20 years ago we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

The Spas 15 a magazine fed shotgun was out over 20 years ago. I like mag fed shotguns as well but the shotgun is kind of dying as a tactical tool other than for breaching so development on it has pretty much came to a standstill so I am not so sure about your comment.

Actually, even the Saiga has been out almost 20 years now, since the mid-90s if I remember correctly

  11. I love my R&R Saigas but I think tac optics should be left alone. No reason to obsolete everyone's shotgun overnight. Want to run a mag fed shotgun and its fun that is what open is for.

    Pat

The shotguns used in TO are already obsolete by a tactical weapons standpoint. The archaic rules we continue to go by force us to keep using them in TO. I would gladly buy a new shotgun and put my Benelli back to service as a bird hunting gun if the rules would allow it. Many other sports out there have constant revisions to rules based on improving technology, why such an aversion to such in 3-gun? I have no desire to convert to open.

With that reasoning one could also argue that lasers and optics have obsoleted iron sights, so why not allow lasers and red dots on pistols and shotguns in TO?

  12. Simpler terms not everyone is but some are and some times the net may get a little too wide but that is an acceptable consequence in a situation like this.

    Pat

The only consequence here is Jerry losing out on money.

I'm sure the crafty terrorist can figure out how to download it. Which is probably what they'll do anyway, since it's cheaper, easier and leaves fewer tracks than buying something from overseas with a credit card and an address.
