  1. FWIW, 7mm-08, 6.5 CM, .260...the 6.5CM is the ticket for the .308 AR pattern rifles...except maybe for the .243. :) I shot the "Massive Penalty Phase" of Iron Man with the .223. You have to shoot from a downslopeing hill, from further away. Even switching guns to another .223 would have been significantly better. But a decent bolt gun is what I would choose next time.

Bolt gun? I specifically went with a semi for this. The targets are so close to each other it's nice to not have to manipulate anything and just bang away on the targets.

I remember Keith lugging some really nice and fancy AI .308 up there one year. The next year he was shooting a semi with the rest of us...

Especially with the wind often howling, walking them in with a bolt is just going to be way too slow. I dont think I've ever seen any top guy shooting a bolt on those targets, but maybe Mark will be the first one :)

  2. What if it was in his hand?

maybe it was in his holster? I've seen ELS attachad Safarilands come off before :)

Do you mean you've seen the ELS clip cone undone? So the entire holster and male clip came off of the female clip on the belt?

Reason I ask is cause my TMMS mini did that on a mag pouch when I bent it just right.

Yeah, during a stage with a gun in it. Might have been a user error and not attached correctly.

  3. Approximately what ranges are the long range bonus targets? I am very confident in my AR to about 450, but wind drift with the 55s I shoot is horrendous once you get way out there. I have a Rem 700 .308, A custom Savage .300WSM with detachable mags, and a .338 ultra Tactical rifle that weighs about 18 lbs. Which would be most appropriate if it is beyond my AR limits?

Semis rule. If you dont have one or can't borrow one locally, see if there's one in your squad you can borrow.

  4. I was wondering if it worked like that. For me, those might be more accurately described as "penalty stages". It seems like "bonus stages" would be structured so there would only be an upside to shooting them? But I understand the approach being used probably works fine for most everyone. Thanks for educating me on this.

Can you also confirm for me that I am allowed to use a bipod or other support device on the "bonus stages" even though I can not use it on the other stages -- I am shooting Tac Optics class. Thanks for the help

It is my first time shooting Iron Man and I have a question about the long range bonus stages. My buddy shot it last year and he said he didn't even try to shoot the bonus stages. I would like to try but I don't want to make my scores/times even worse. If I completely fail on the bonus stage could my score/time get worse or is there only an upside to the bonus stages? My second question is whether I can use a bipod on the gun I use for the bonus stages? I am shooting in the Tactical Optics class. Thanks

The only downside to attempting the bonus targets and missing them is the time added. Last shot is last shot. The timer keeps running while attempting the bonus targets.

You can use a bi pod on your Long range "bonus" gun. You CANNOT use a bi pod on your tac rifle for that stage. (unless you're ready to graduate to open class)

In the past, you were not allowed to handle 2-long guns at the same time.

Unloading and slinging it should be ok, I'd think

  5. 3 gun nation has a 20 or 30 second penalty for a unsafe abandoned gun as well. Makes sense to me. Make the dump container safe and the gun won't shoot itself once its set down.

    Doesnt make sense to me.

I think I've seen more grounding AD/NDs in 3GN events (including the older shoot offs) than I have in all other 3-gun matches combined and those matches by far outnumber the 3GN ones.

You're talking about people pulling triggers negligently which is different than a gun going off miraculously when they are sitting still.

I've seen both, the latter only in a 3GN shoot off.

So what made the firearm fire with nobody present? Did it fall? Did the trigger get hooked on a piss poor dump container? Was the safety on only it was faulty?

What would solve the problem of firearms going off Unattended or when being abandoned? Match DQ? Jail time? Go back to the old school multigun where we shoot one gun per stage?

The point Im trying to make is no matter what the penalty for abandoning an unsafe gun it won't reduce the number of them. It's an accident when they are abandoned unsafe.

Unless you make it such a harsh penalty that everyone triple checks every gun before they ditch it.

And your point is flawed. If the penalty for abandoning an unsafe firearm is harsh enough, people will triple check and not do it, alas the number of them will go down.

Saying that the penalty has no bearing on the number of incidents is directly opposed to what I have observed, so I dont buy that for a second.

No matter which option is chosen, it will be the same for everyone, so why not go with the safer option? It's not like grounding a safe weapon is really going to hurt some people more than others, is it?

  7. You should have heard the BS lines she gave.
    - Our policy not to give a printed label
    - We don't have a way to give you a printed label
    - We are at the mercy of our supplier on what parts get sent
    - The $10 included a tracker
    - I checked with service and they said the reds "should" work
If you know anything about any of the above... Hogwash!
I sent it back on my dime. In the future I will go to great lengths and possibly even used to avoid them!
At any rate it's a $16 loss for nothing. To top it all off I looked at the replacement follower and it's a dull finish unlike the Hunter follower. Many of the replacement parts aren't as expected it seems.

Kinda late now, but here's what I'd do.

    1. Ask them for a return label, tell them that they shipped the wrong items and that you either need the correct items shipped to you, or a full refund.

    2. If no label, new items or refund show up within a week, email them a reminder

    3. If nothing still hasnt showed up within another week, file a complaint with the BBB in their state and dispute the charge with your credit card company.

The resulting charge-backs are going to cost them money, so if more people did this maybe they'd finally get the point?

  8. If the RO shouted it while the shooter was walking up to the starting position and the guy whips out his gun, sure DQ away.

If the shooter is at the starting position and the RO is standing right there next to him, then it's just a dick move that could have been handled differently.

  9. Registration is now open for the Trijicon World Shooting Championship. Visit link below.

Hope to see you all there. Lots of money and prizes on the line.

This is the official registration invitation link for the Trijicon World Shooting Championship (WSC) presented by the NRA. This match is for the title “World’s Greatest Shooter” on September 10-13 2014. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS INVITATION TO OTHER SHOOTERS FOR REGISTRATION!

Travis might have to chime in here in case there are changes this year, but in previous matches, those long range bonus targets have probably been the most important targets of the match. They have been worth around 200+s on a sub 300s stage, which means that if you dont shoot them, a decent run without shooting them would give you maybe 25-30% on that stage. In 2012, the best score that didnt shoot them was 26%, so there's not much to lose by trying.

  11. I dont really care if there is a prize table or not, if the match is good, I'll shoot it either way.

However, if there is a prize table and its by raffle and not by finish, I wont go, since prize table raffles are silly and unamerican

If you want a better prize, practice.

I like three day matches. Once I've hauled all my crap and ass to some remote godforsaken location, I might as well stay a few days.

  12. This came in my email from Predator Tactical:

    http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dfa81f0d85ff110cdda7b4fb5&id=80b2163a00&e=c5e603974a

Some of their claims just made me shake my head..."World's First 3-Gun Competition Ready Shotgun?" Apparently they missed the Mossberg 930 JM and the Beretta 1301 Comp. And those are just two I can think of off the top of my head.

"Shotguns were always the most expensive and complicated part of a 3 gunner's kit.?" Seriously? My AR upper cost more than my whole shotgun, and that's after I got the thing Cerakoated a pretty color. (And I don't have a very expensive upper, either) And I know there are guys out there whose scope costs more than all three of my guns, combined.

For $995, pre-order price, that thing better be awesome.

Still roughly $2000 cheaper than the Taran version :)

  13. There must be a way to have a steady supply, but I just haven't found it. I really don't hear that much about it in these forums. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Back order from a few different places, if the shipments come in too close, sell the extra locally.

Make sure you have a good stash on hand. Even before the craze I made sure to always have at least a year's worth of components stashed. That should give you ample time to restock.

  14. Must be new if its real. I wrap my boxes totally and never had a problem

I checked out the USPS website and could not find anything that said the whole box could not be wrapped. I think I will have to contact the main office.

    http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm100/flat-rate-reference.htm

"Tape may be applied to the flaps and seams to reinforce the container; provided the design of the container is not enlarged by opening the sides and the container is not reconstructed in any way."

  15. Absolutely. I think there were more FPs that didnt work than did work when I tried out loads. I tried factory as well as reloads, where I played with the OAL to no avail.

In the end I gave up on FPs and went with JHPs and it's been flawless ever since.
