  1. If we can get back on topic...how would you calibrate this target?

Should the threshold be two perfectly timed hits, top then bottom, with a ounce and a half of #6 from a full choke at 15 yards?

    Probably not, right?

    So what is the criteria?

I own one and know that greased and un-greased makes a BIG difference.

What about piss poor copies made by the local welder?

I am not "afraid" of this nor any other target at a match. This question is...if the target's function comes INTO question

how does a MD prove the target works as it should?

Some of us travel many miles at considerable expense to play this game we love. Having a target of ANY kind that is not

working properly makes for a bad day. Target that can not be seen with the naked eye fall into this realm as well. Targets

that are built wrong or set up wrong, have the same effect.

You can't really do it in two shots, since timing would come into play and figuring out and applying some calibration device seems way too cumbersome.

If you really want to calibrate it, I'd think that the only practical way of doing it would be to calibrate it with something that spins it in one shot. That, or you just live with the fact that it's a target that might not be very consistent.

  2. how do you calculate how high you need to aim? ballistic calculator? where you get BC for 9mm bullets?

JBM has quite a few 9mm bullets available in their database.

For a 115 @ 1200 fps the drop at 100 is less than you'd think, its actually only around 7" depending sight height, zero etc...

  3. With the new rules about complying with local capacity laws, it sure seems that L10 should go away to me. Open, Limited and Production are far and away the biggest divisions and I think a PO division would come in 4th in pretty short order.

I am sure this must be discussed elsewhere but I agree with this and think L10 is useless. The people who I usually see shooting L10 are doing so only because they want to compete in a smaller pool of shooters to try and get closer to the top of the results.

And we'll replace that with a division for people that are upset that they're handicapped in Open with their current setup and want to finish higher?

    Makes sense ;)

  4. There's another thread from a few weeks back about the same thing.

I could never get FPs to run reliably in my .40 TS. I tried everything from max length to really short (cant remember exactly how short though, but short...) and nothing worked. Tried a few different factory FP loads without any luck either, so I finally gave up on FPs and switched to JHPs.

  5. 115gr MG CMJs and 5.4gr vv340. OAL 1.135"

    Very accurate, sub 2" 10 shot groups @ 50y from a rest. 137 pf

The load is pretty soft, but I bought some 3n37 to try with to see if I can get something that shoots a little softer with the same accuracy. My buddy shoots the same 115 CMJs in his, but he's using 3n38 (7.4gr) and just above 140 in pf, if I remember correctly.

    ETA: Guns are Czechmates....

  6. I have to agree with Eric here. I dont really have an issue with any match official shooting for score, no matter if they're stats, RO, MD, RM or whatever.

Similarly, I do have an issue with people shooting the match for score and walking the prize table if they have spent considerable time testing and proofing stages, no matter what role they play in running the match (assuming it's not a club match)

  7. Gose,

That's hard to pin down since I used different parts from different guns and may have the largest parts cache this side of AZ!

I guess if someone wanted to start from scratch and build this, they could buy the following:

-short dust cover SA Shadow - $850 http://czcustom.com/CZ75SHADOWSABLACK.aspx

    -Czechmate comp - $245 http://shop.cz-usa.com/ProductDetail/19207_Compensator-9mm-4-Port

-TS barrel (CZ USA had the CM barrel in stock at one point but I don't see it now, plus it's about 0.18" too long) - $145 http://shop.cz-usa.com/ProductDetail/047004940706_Barrel-Tactical-Sport-9mm

    -Czechmate hammer - $90 http://shop.cz-usa.com/ProductDetail/40108_Concealed-Hammer-Sa-Only

    -Czechmate racker - $36 http://shop.cz-usa.com/ProductDetail/550047000001_Slide-Racker-For-Tsczechmate-Only

-Czechmate CMore mount - $150 (I used the Cheely mount, but they don't seem to be in stock now) http://shop.cz-usa.com/ProductDetail/40100_Czechmate-Scope-Mount

    -CMore Slide Ride - $260 http://www.shootersconnectionstore.com/C-More-Slide-Ride-Railway-Black-CLICK-P1313.aspx

    -CZC mag well - $75 http://czcustom.com/cz75magwellidpa.aspx

    -Mag well mainspring plug - $35 http://czcustom.com/cz75fullsizemagwellplug.aspx

-(3) sets CZC springs/followers/base pads to get the Shadow mags to 25rnds reloadable - $165

-(1) 25 round mag complete (to compare to the 3-20s and 1-26 you get with the CM) - $104

    -Tax/shipping/FFL fees ~ $300

-Gunsmith labor to drill/tap frame, cut/thread barrel, fit comp ~ $500

    Grand total - $2,955

    Wow that's depressing :eatdrink:

Granted, you would be left with maybe $200 worth of parts to sell, plus you could save money buying parts used and doing the work yourself; $2K would be about the cheapest anyone could get this done.

That confirms what I gathered when I was looking into building one of my CZs into an Open gun. I ended up buying a Czechmate as I didnt see it being worth the hassle, though I would prefer a gun built on an "unmolested" TS frame as I prefer the TS grip to the Czechmate one. ( Though not strongly enough to have my top end fitted to one of my TS guns, maybe if I can find a second Czechmate :) )

  8. Like I said, if the gun shoots POI=POA off the bench, then changing the zero off-hand is only masking problems in you shooting technique.

You can't correctly call your shots if your gun is not shooting where it's pointing IMHO.

Calling your shots is the best way to know if your gun is zero'd :)

I never shoot off a bench because I've never shot off a bench in competition. When you shoot off a bench you're looking through a different part of your eye and your body mechanics are all different.

Yes and no. In theory youre absolutely correct, but it's also something that can be overcome with practice.

Case in point, PPC. You shoot off hand, kneeling, strong hand against a barricade, weak hand against a barricade, sitting and prone and a lot of it is done at 50y. Quite different body mechanics between the carious positions, but I still had the same POA/POI for all positions and I even used my left eye when shooting left hand barricade.

If you just sit down at a rest once/ year to test your stuff, yes, it's likely that you'll see different results from your off hand shooting. However, with a bit of practice, its not too hard to over come. Though, I doubt too many action shooters want to spend any time trying to figure it out :)

  9. Can you use one of these in Cali? Not a rifle, not a pistol.attachicon.gifimage.jpg

It requires a decent understanding of CA law to do the AR pistol thing, so I'm betting it's not a pistol, either. It's not old enough to be C&R, so it's NFA.

Not necessarily. See this letter to the Franklin Armory owner from the ATF (btw, I was wrong about AOW and NFA also).

    http://www.franklinarmory.com/XO-26_Letter__c_.pdf

Again, if one is really interested I'm certain Franklin would be willing to help out. Otherwise more detail could probably be gotten from Calguns.net.

That letter is worth about as much as the cost of the bandwidth needed to download the pdf here in CA. That brace is pretty much guaranteed to end you up with a felony state SBR charge and a letter from the ATF isnt going to help your defense much.

  10. The A1s look awesome! The only drawback is that (AFAIK) you can't get them with a comp.

I have two Firebird MKAs and I might replace one, or both, of them with A1s. However, I'm in no rush since I have two guns that run, so I'll hold off until the comp situation has been sorted out.

I'm also keeping my eyes on the Rhino, which looks pretty darn good as well.

  11. Okay i'll throw this out there. What about when AD's happen while RO's are unloading a previous ditched safe weapon, for the sake of saving time. Seen it happen 3 different times at 3 different matches over the years.

Cant be on the shooter-but i think i'd sh$t myself if i heard a shotgun go off behind me.

Let me tell you this, it's still nothing like walking a stage when you hear the beep and realize one second later that it wasnt just someone testing the timer...

  12. FWIW, 7mm-08, 6.5 CM, .260...the 6.5CM is the ticket for the .308 AR pattern rifles...except maybe for the .243. :) I shot the "Massive Penalty Phase" of Iron Man with the .223. You have to shoot from a downslopeing hill, from further away. Even switching guns to another .223 would have been significantly better. But a decent bolt gun is what I would choose next time.

Bolt gun? I specifically went with a semi for this. The targets are so close to each other it's nice to not have to manipulate anything and just bang away on the targets.

I remember Keith lugging some really nice and fancy AI .308 up there one year. The next year he was shooting a semi with the rest of us...

Especially with the wind often howling, walking them in with a bolt is just going to be way too slow. I dont think I've ever seen any top guy shooting a bolt on those targets, but maybe Mark will be the first one :)

Come now. You know I will never be a threat to win a match. But I do get some lucky squirrel nuts on a long range stage here and there. When I was playing with the .308 pattern ARs, I shot my bolt gun at 3 10" steel gongs at 600 yards. 15 rounds, 15 hits, one mag change. I was halfway through the 3rd mag when I got my 15th hit with the gasser (47 rounds). The bolt time was 30% faster than the auto time.

It is like I get on the semi-auto trigger and my sight pictures are not perfect, but what they hey, send it anyway. With the bolt gun, I become more patient. What is the line about knowing your limitations? :)

When I get the .308 AR-15 upper running, I might try again and do an upper swap on the clock. That will be a first. :roflol:

If it was a no wind - small target set up, I agree that the bolt action would be a more viable choice, but this is quite the opposite.

In your test above, I wonder what the outcome would have been if the targets were twice the size?
