  1. I'd have to agree with you there.
  2. When the 44 Magnum was first released there were many S&W M29's that came onto the second hand market with a box of cartridges that had only 6 missing. But Elmer Keith regarded the recoil as nothing to worry about. Stance, grip, sight-picture and get used to the recoil. And above all, as Flex reminded us, stay safe.
  3. What about "O Brother where art thou". ??
  4. I wouldn't think it would do the carpet a lot of good either.
  5. Pistol shooting, like Golf, is a fickle mistress. But that's what keeps us coming back.
  6. Totally forgot about this one. Great depiction of one the most awesome small unit actions in history. Michael Caine does some of the best work in his career, and his career had just barely begun. I saw Michael Caine interviewed on Parkinson and he recounted his surprise at being selected to play the part of a foppish British Officer when he was actually "a little cockney git". There was also a fine performance by Nigel Green in the role of Colour Sgt Bourne.
  7. I think this is what makes it more likely that it was an accidental double load rather than an overload, but if it were the first in a series of failures, the precautions you are taking should ensure that you don't ever have to find out. Stay safe.
  8. I've used 452AA and WST, which was supposed to be 452AA renamed, but tightloop is correct - the same powder weight does not give the same performance. WST is also inversely temperature sensitive. 452AA was a very good powder and, provided it hasn't deteriorated, I think it would be worth using. I'd agree with Dick, start light and break out the chrono.
  9. A movie that no-one has mentioned is the 1964 film “Zulu”. It recounts the battle of Rorke’s Drift where about 100 British soldiers held off an attack by 4000 Zulus that had decimated the main British column of 1200 men. There were 11 Victoria Crosses awarded for this engagement. It has all the ingredients of a “guy” movie and my wife usually sleeps through it.
  10. Married with Children: Marcy derides Al's favorite program, Psycho Dad, because it had 75 shootings in the first 5 minutes. Al's reply was "A man's got to reload."
  11. I'm not an armorer or a gunsmith, but at one time I considered buying a Beretta and paid particular attention to magazine articles written about them. Their method of locking and unlocking the slide and barrel tends to scuff the top of the barrel. This is much more noticeable on a blue gun than a stainless and is considered normal. However the marks should be on the top, not off to one side. I would be inclined to be telling Beretta that the gun has a problem and asking them what they intend to do about it.
  12. And the SV is made of METAL, not plastic. Stay with the SV.
  13. Not to mention excellence in the martial arts.
  14. Makes perfect sense to me too. But the anti-gun groups push the idea that if guns are banned then criminals won't have them either. In Australia there is no right of carry or even a right to use a gun for self defence, but Prime Minister Howard is now confiscating guns from heavily regulated sporting shooters on the basis that in if law abiding don't have guns then the criminals won't be able to steal guns from them and therefore the criminals wont have them either. So while people are dying from underfunded hospitals and lack of subsidisation on life saving drugs, Howard is to spend over $100 Million dollars buying back low risk registered handguns from licenced law-abiding sporting shooters. If I were feel the urge to slip from rant mode to paranoia mode I could point out that little dictators whose names start with H usually remove guns from the law abiding to remove any likelyhood of resistance should there arise any serious opposition to their dictates. But I'll resist that urge.
  15. On my Hornady Projector there is an adjusting screw that alters the height of the plate in relation to the primer seating pad. Don't know about the Dillon. Some of their users could comment on how they acheive it. It has the effect of crushing the primer and making it more sensitive and is normally used for highly tuned double action revolvers in combination with Federal primers to achieve reliable ignition. It is not normally relevant to autos.
  16. Had to look that one up So did I. Definition was "Churl". Had to look that one up too. Pete, I agree with your reloading strategy and the philosophy in your last post.
  17. Pat, Thanks for sharing your experience. I was one that thought a ricochet would be reduced in velocity and tumbling and therefore reduced in range. 500 yds is a lot more than I would have guessed. Thanks to all for the input on a subject on which we all need to be informed.
  18. I have recently increased the seating depth of my Federal primers to 6 thousandths so I am particularly interested to hear Brian's comments on this aspect. Brian....if you're out there.
  19. It would be unusual to have an accidental overcharge that wasn't double. The usual cause is a distraction of some sort so if you double your attention following any interruption you'll (hopefully) avoid any more mind blowers. By reducing your powder load you've also reduced the risk of a recurrance due to a hot-load/brass-fatigue combination, but I'd still be backing the double charge theory.
  20. Oh yeah, and since Vince has deregulated the 10 movie limit, almost any movie starring Clint Eastwood.
  21. I'll chalk up another vote for The Man Who Would Be King and Jeremiah Johnson and add a vote for the 1952 movie "The Wild North" with Stewart Granger and Wendell Corey. And let us not forget Kevin Costner's tribute to male egotism, Tin Cup.
  22. I have read extracts from John Lott's 1998 book called "More Guns, Less Crime" where he mounted an extremely persuasive argument against gun control with statistics showing a worldwide trend to an increase in gun crime following gun confiscations from the law-abiding. This principle would appear to be self evident to any rational person, but the words rational, media and politician do not often collide in the same sentence. In such debates I always keep in mind the following quote from the Pulitzer prize winning historian, Barbara Tuchman, from her book "The March of Folly". "Wooden-headedness, the source of self-deception, is a factor that plays a remarkably large role in government. It consists of assessing a situation in terms of preconceived fixed notions while ignoring or rejecting any contrary signs. It is acting according to wish while not allowing oneself to be deflected by the facts. It is epitomized in a historian's statement about Phillip II of Spain, the surpassing wooden-head of all sovereigns: "No experience of the failure of his policy could shake his belief in its essential excellence"."
  23. Hmm, I stand corrected. Curious that the Lee website should list the 9mm die on one page but not on the page which was found via their search facility. It appears that Skywalker67 has provided your answer.
