  1. No problem at all through my tanfo or g34, these are already I buy now.
  2. Thanks for the info. At what point during load & make ready do y'all go about this? Early on? Right before reholstering? Any requirements? Also, once it's decocked do I need to use the safety? My understanding is no but I want to be sure
  3. Hey all, I'm making the switch from my M&P Pro to a Tanfo for production USPSA. I fully understand the load and make ready process for my striker fired rig, pretty straight forward. The Tanfo doesn't have a decocker (I don't think any of them do), so at what point do I lower the hammer? I know there are allegedly three methods to decocking, support hand pinch, strong hand thumb or support have thumb roll. Is any inherently better than the other? Any other advice/words of wisdom to someone making the switch other than dry fire the hell out of it?
  4. Glad to see the positive reactions people are having to this. Been really considering it and pushing me towards it. Thanks to all who shared experiences. I have been seeing a benefit shooting my rimfire open setups so a cloned setup of my production rig can probably do wonders.
  5. Meant to follow up on this thread. We tried every base plate we could find on the factory mags and nothing fit right, even after shaving the mags down a bit. Interesting thing is, Magpul mags work like a dream. Drop free and fast, no issues using Arredondo base plates.
  6. I shoot a 5" pro as my competition gun for production USPSA. I'm looking for a backup production gun, but also interested in carry optics setup to try to help speed up my irons shooting. Was considering getting a core to use for both purposes, slap a dot on it unless something goes sideways with my primary, then can rip off the dot and run it in production. Question is: how different are there sights? I know I'd need to flip out the sights to get black rear/fiber front, but is the height difference dramatic? Any other differences I may be overlooking? Is it a dumb idea?
  7. I've had my best luck at gun shows if you have any local. Been able to talk to the sellers and get some good deals by buying 5-10k at a time. Cabela's also has a modest sale currently.

    Carry load

Awesome, thanks for the advice @armydad. I know people disagree on doing this but I get my legal advice elsewhere. I'm really just looking for load data or generic information relating to the topic. While I appreciate the input, I'm really just wanting information on load and bullet types. I'm not looking for a flame war here so please, if you disagree with making your own defensive ammo, just let it go. I'd like this to stay on topic to be a resource for myself or any other who may undertake this arguably foolhardy endeavor.

    Carry load

Sure, planning to try a good handful, just looking for the starting line. I have some 115gr XTPs that I got as a rebate from something or other so may start there
  10. Anyone have a recommendation on the actual projectile, particular brand or anything? Any powder workup?

    Carry load

For those who do reload their carry, any particular brand of hollow points better than another?
  12. The podcast can be found here: http://www.shannonsmithshooting.com/category/podcast/. He mentions it a number of times, sorry but I can't remember which episodes. Overall if you have the time and like podcasts, I find his pretty good so worth listening to overall.

    Carry load

That is all pretty reasonable. Do you somehow make a load similar to your factory defensive round to use to get more acclimated to the recoil and such, or just shoot the gun and don't worry about it? Probably overthinking it all more out of boredom than anything, but curious nonetheless.
  14. I'll preface this with "I know it's probably not the right tool for the job". My dad has bear on his property and was looking for something larger than his 9mm shield to help defend himself. He decided a 45 shield was the right move, even with me saying it probably isn't the best move. Fully aware that if engaging one could be avoided, would anyone have recommendations on load data for a round that can be as effective as possible against a bear? From what I see, JHP is probably not the right move and velocity is king since there is so much fat/tissue. I know there are a small handful of rounds marketed for this purpose but looking for thoughts/advice. Thanks
  15. Hey all, Been reloading for a bit now and am now looking to get into reloading for my carry gun as well as my competition. I know these will be different loads, so looking for input. I like carrying JHP and I shoot a m&p shield 9mm (only saying it because maybe the short barrel matters?). Any suggestion on what bullets and powders are appreciated, specific weights for both really appreciated. I know I can grab some bullets and go by book loads but just wondering what others use. Thanks
  16. I've been thinking of doing a carry optic rig that mirrored my production rig for just this reason. I was listening to the Shannon Smith podcast a few weeks ago (catching up, not sure how recent an episode it was) and he says that to learn to shoot production faster, shoot carry optic. The reason, he says, is because you'll learn what is acceptable and what is not faster. Thinking through it and playing around with my rimfire open stuff for steel challenge and NSSF Rimfire I do think this makes a lot of sense. I have yet to get a second m&p, one that can accept a dot, but I think there will be value in doing it.
  17. Hey, Got a Gen 4 G34 for limited. Have a SJC Magwell and it seems to be having issues dropping factory mags, but it'll drop the magpul ones no issue. Looking to get base plates to do the +5/6 on the mags, but with the stock ones not dropping and the magpul ones not able to accept the fit from aftermarket base plates, figured I'd turn to the collective experience here. Anyone have suggestions for a base plate/mag combo that will drop free with this well? Don't want to cut away at the frame, but if I need to take the dremel to the magwell a little, so be it. -DJ
  18. I have tried out the new mag, and it does work really well. I haven't had a ton of time, but I will be continuing to use it. My main issue is that I can't get the pull weight down all the way to the 3lb that I run in my competition gun, but it is between 3.5-4 on the lighter spring. It feels like a legit trigger pull, but the clicking noise it makes is a bit annoying. All in all, worth the money if you dry fire.
  19. I have a ~3lb Apex in the gun I intended it for, but I do have a few M&Ps that still have stock triggers that I can test on.
  20. Anyone who may have been interested in this, they just released a dry fire mag for the M&P a day or two ago. Have one ordered, will report back one it comes in.
  21. This is a very quick read that I think has a ton of useful information about how you should go about the mental game. Anderson seemingly swears by this book and I agree with him.
  22. Been a bit behind on my training and practice, but as we all know life gets in the way. No excuses, it's on me. I've started to figure out the dot issues I've been having, still not fully there but I'm getting there. Shot my first USPSA match today (the rules, not an official one) but I'm still mostly one handed, but landed 5th overall, 4th in limited (limiting reloads with my support hand out of commission). Shot well, would have done better if I trusted my shot calls more. Got 4 alphas nearly touching each other on one stage because I wasn't trusting my eyes. Shooting NSSF Rimfire Challenge tomorrow, hoping for a better showing than last month.
  23. Thanks for the additional podcast recommendations all, got a ton downloaded to see how I like them. Appreciate the insight, still open to more suggestions especially around books
  24. The ones I load for the Glock shooter in my house are 147gr Xtreme over 3.2 titegroup at 1.16 OAL. Accurate, cycle well, about 133PF or so. I personally like the 147gr Blue Bullets a bit more, but they had an issue cycling at the same load with a stock recoil spring in the Glock, guessing due to the 147s being 150s, but switched springs and it runs those on same powder/OAL
  25. I have some RCBS, some Hornady Americans and some Lee dies. I'm not a very experienced reloader but they all get the job done.
