  1. Weekend warrior mountain traffic from Denver
  2. I'm probably running a little different scope than most of you are, but any advice/confirmation about getting the 2" for a Viper 2.5-10? Thinking 3" may be tough to use with the higher mag settings, but hoping 2" would be ok?
  3. Do you know the offset of the arrow precision spr? Think the vortex is 2" or 3" depending which model and PEPR is about the same?
  4. Good info - I've heard vortex will send you the upgraded torx screws. Think EGW will do that too for their bases. If I had to guess based on my other vortex products Philippines may be a possible origin?
  5. Just wondering based on personal experience what is your experience with these mounts. Seems like a lot of people use Burris, the vortex is 2 oz lighter but has 4 less screws on the rings and maybe less substantial bolts to attach to rail? Let me know what you think or if there's another option that I should strongly consider that's not double the price. Use all xtr 30mm rings in my precision rifles and love them, but this is my first AR.
  6. If I got a jam in a gun like that in the first 100 rounds I'd sell it immediately - for half price - to me thanks for sharing though, one day soon hoping to own one like that! Report back on the progress with your loads/reliability.
  7. Lots of good info in this thread, and its nice to see no arguing yet! Really like this forum. My opinion is anything 6 or 6.5 mm would be hard to make an ethical kill on big game with at 1500. Probably could tip over an antelope! If there is something out there I'd love to see the load and ballistics though. 7mm are the most efficient bullet till you get into the bigger chey tec's or 50's of course. A 7mm 180 Berger is quite a beast coming out of a 284 mag and 30" barrel but don't see enough energy in my loads to kill a big deer or elk/bear at that range. The 7 RUM is one of my favorite hunting guns (probably favorite actually) and shooting 180's with a 28" barrel may get you very close to what you're looking for, but at that point you can run almost everything the same cost wise and shoot the 338 edge (dies may be slightly more but that is so minor it's hardly worth considering). Brass, bullets, powder, etc will all be so close, and gun component costs will be pretty much identical as well. I shoot mine with 300 gr Begers and wouldn't hesitate to take anything I hunt (up to elk) at the ranges you're talking. I'm doing 2950+ out of the barrel and feel very safe with this load. I do have a mag system for it but generally am single feeding for max length on my long throated chamber. Keep us updated on whatever you get, and most of all have fun! Remember there is no one perfect gun, so I prefer to build specialized pieces of equipment that do one thing really well (my 338 edge has a 33" barrel with the brake and weighs in at the max western hunting weight so not exactly a carry gun but it shoots).
  8. I'm a big fan of bore tech products as well for my long range precision rifles. Use eliminator pretty religiously (every cleaning on my target rifles), although am also a big fan of the c4 and may end up using that more (carbon remover). I only clean with carbon fiber rods and undersized nylon brushes wrapped in 1.5 or 2" cotton patches. 1 wet then sit then a few dry and repeat. This is how I learned from my mentor (a bench rest shooter) and it's always worked. After my barrels are broken in I only need a few passes with bore tech to come out copper free, and one or two fowler shots seems to recoat the inside of the barrel (although more often than not my first shot is dead on too). I do believe carbon (powder) is much more detrimental to accuracy and good match barrel doesn't seem to get copper fowled too much in my experience. For the record I'm a guy that cleans too much -- every 20 - 50 rounds depending on the gun, which is every range session or few. Also if my gun will sit for a week or more before it hits the round count it gets cleaned before storage. I'm also shooting mainly wildcat calibers (lots of powder and small bore) with sierra match kings or berger vld's.
  9. Hi guys and gals, Just joined this site and already I've gleaned so much information. I appreciate all the friendly and knowledgable people that seem to frequent this forum. My name is Luke, from central Wisconsin originally and after much bouncing around I've settled in Colorado (Boulder to be exact). I've been a hunter since I could get out into the woods, but had not spent much time with pistols until the last few years. Got into target shooting with polymer frame 9mm's. Recently was bit by the 1911 bug and that's how I stumbled onto this great site! I still shoot long range rifle (targets and hunting) and shotguns (trap and hunting) and do all of this for enjoyment not competition, but am transitioning into the pistol world for recreational shooting. Again, I don't have intentions of necessarily competing, just shooting for enjoyment. That being said, I like quality gear and enjoy being committed and competent at whatever I am doing, so I look forward to learning more about the sport of pistol shooting and the gear that's involved. If anybody is a front range colorado shooter send me a pm as I'm always looking for new places to shoot and people to go with. Luke
