  1. I've got an idea for a stage. My grandfather was part of a group of Marines that went swimming after securing an airfield. They got caught in a riptide and most of those who made it back ended up well behind enemy lines. So he and a few buddies had to make their way back toward their own very heavily defended lines while avoiding the enemy, at night. My grandfather was one of the lucky few who made it to shore with his skivvies still on. So who's with me for a repeat of this event? ;)

    skivvies or no?

  2. Using a Garand in 3gun id going to make it tough for you to run. Because it takes big brass balls! I love the idea. I'm not shooting the WWII division at LaRue mainly because I don't have a Garand but I think you should run the gun!

Ummmm...you should be using an Arisaka for that match. :roflol:

Dan, Don't tempt me. I've got a couple. I wonder if Sheldon will let me run one with one of those god awful long bayonets on it? lol

i still make my offer of borrowing my extra M1. bayonet is shorter tho.

hey smoof! you wanna borrow a garand? i got an extra one with a new barrel.

  4. I thought I would try HM Class this year. The two barrels that have caught my eye are the Lothar Walther LW 50 barrels (20 inch, can be profiled to desired weight), which features a 1x11 twist, or the Fulton Armory/Criterion lightweight (18.5 inch, 2.4 pounds), chrome lined, 1x10 twist. I plan to use bullets in the 147 grain to 155 grain weight. Does anyone have any experience with these? Any other suggestions regarding barrel length, rifle twist would be welcomed as well.

I have shot a JP 18" for several years. The only drawback i have noticed is the velocity loss with the shorter barrel. it is very accurate. This year i am shooting a JP 22" that has been turned down. I wanted the extra velocity. My standard load for the 18" averaged about 2650, with the 22" i am getting an average of 2820.

  5. I shot one in New Mexico a few years ago and shot "patrol". I wore my sam brown with a Safariland 6280 holster and mag pouches with snaps. This setup is how the "spirit" of the rules were written. There were plenty of guys who showed up with their STI in a "no retention" holster with CR Speed pouches. (they claimed that they worked UC and that their gear had no retention required.) They brought JP CTR-02s and their 3 gun Benellis. Everyone knows that is not really duty gear, but the match director didn't have the heart to turn them away. I think the top 3 or 4 guys in "tactical" all had competition gear.

Back then, they allowed shotshell caddies, but I've heard from a friend that they are no longer allowing them, due to the unfair advantage they offer. I hear everyone now has to use a "dump pouch" for shotgun shells.

I guess you'll have to decide whether you want to "game it" or shoot it they way it was meant to be. Don't be surprised to see some very interesting "duty gear".

at the Albuquerque match this last fall there was one stage that required that everybody use a dump pouch, which they provided. on the other shotgun stages i used shell caddies and the side-saddle on my shotgun.

  6. I am going to one of the NRA Tactical Police Competition matches in LA next month and wondered what people who have already attended are running gear wise? I have a Safariland ELS setup for Outlaw and figure my 771 pistol mag pouches are out but I can make due with some 74's I have (I think they past muster) but not sure if my ELS belt and clip set up will work.

What are you running, even if it is straight duty issue stuff? Thanks for the input.

i have shot several of these matches. the holster must have one 'active' retaining device. i use a blackhawk serpa. as to mag pouches i use open top blackhawk ones. be sure to check the length of the shotgun barrel they allow. i use a 21" Benelli M2. you cannot use magazine extensions to expand mag capacity. Most of the stages are not overly long. I don't remember using more than two rifle or pistol mags. of course, you never know. take a close look at the targets and remember where the scoring zones are. they are a little different. they (the NRA) score "down". i.e, if the shot hits the line it registers as the lower score. they are fun matches but you may run into some ROs with little experience as ROs.

    go forth and have fun!

  7. Ok, I've found many threads concerning specific scopes. What I would like to know is what is the preferred or most prevalent scope out there in Multigun?

What scope are you using and why?

Actually, i am using two different scopes. 1) a Swarovski Z6-1-6X with BRT reticle, 2) an IOR 1.5-8X with horseshoe tactical reticle. I like the Z6 for the true 1X and BRT reticle which i finally figgered out how to zero. It is much lighter than the IOR which i previously used as the #1 scope. The IOR is a really good scope but heavy. Once i figgered out where to zero it, it has performed well. (Notice i said "it" performed well.)

  8. After 30 years of carrying a badge and a gun i am inclined to fall back on what a very famous and noted old Border Patrolman said: "Don't trust your life on any weapon with 'automatic' in its name." I have an 870 SG, a Model 70 '06 and a Ruger Security Six .357 magnum.

Now those are not the guns i play the 3 gun game with, but those are my 'go with' guns.

  9. I agree with SPQR476 but I'll add that I shoot 3 gun for fun. I seriously doubt I will ever be in a "real life" shooting situation & if I do, it probably won't involve 3 guns at once. I will not shoot 3 gun matches with "creep & peep" rules. If it becomes training for real life, I'm really not interested. I have a job, it gets serious & even life threatening sometimes so I personally don't want to have a "serious" hobby. As a game, for fun, I'll shoot it till I can't carry my own guns or see the targets, I guess.

you mean we are supposed to see the targets? uh-oh.

  10. Hate to break up this love fest between Smokin and landshark45, but there are some who actually disagree with you and feel that 600 yard targets are not "practical" (whatever that means) in the game of 3-gun.

I appreciate and enjoy the occasional target at 500-600 yards (preferably a bonus target if over 500), as long as the target is clearly visible to the naked eye and doesn't rely on RO interpretatation (in other words, the target should fall down when hit). Too often we have LR targets not visible to the naked eye (especially given changing environmental conditions) OR subject to RO's calling hits (ROs with varying degrees of vision, ability, and precision). Just because you've got a mile of land at your range doesn't mean you have to shoot a mile.

AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! HALLELUJAH! AMEN! I do believe a shooter must be able to see the doggone target with the naked eye at all times of the day. Be that through wonderful backers or painting. We are playing a game. anybody who tries to put tactical on this needs to stop it.

  11. Age is almost 60. MAY be a factor, but then I would have blurred sights all the time. IMO.

Of course my memory may be shorter and I could forget to focus on front sight. :)

Trying to run irons as long as possible. Had a young man tell me I shot irons really well, said I must have had military training. Yup...no optics then.

i started losing my crisp vision at age 60. sometimes it was ok, then sometimes it wasn't. i got some glasses that have .75 diopter correction. works pretty good for most things, but i need more for precise shooting. i just gave up and went into scope for rifle.

  12. this is the garand clip pouch that brownell;s is carrying.

How are you planning on carrying it?

It looks like it's about the right size, maybe add more straps to turn it into a chest rig?

Please try whatever rig you have at a match, and remember there will be stages with all 3 guns. To make room for enblocs on my right (strong) side, I am turning myself into a weak-hand shotgun reloader to move the shotshell trays to my weak (left) side.

Side note: You will not need 12 clips for any stage at this match. Not sure what the max count per stage is, but it is way under 96. That is too much reloading for the max stage times we have to run. Of course, never know, Sheldon may give WW2 division more time. The club matches are not a perfect representation of the big match, but I have only needed more than 2 reloads once, and the MD acknowledged that stage would not work unmodified for WW2 division.

Yes, this image is that of an M2 (my M2) but my Super Nova wears a similar unit.

I believe I know the answer but is ANY rear sight prohibited?

I may have to rethink my WWII entry as it would now entail the price of another barrel, or at least removing a perfectly set and zeroed sight :(

    Patrick

Patrick, he reads the forum, but you might shoot the MD an email and ask. There are some shotguns out there with 10/22 sights, too.

    Lee

you obviously haven't seen me shoot!
  13. Thanks Wynn! I totally forgot about their LE matches that they really do oversee. I totally forgot about them because I'm not LE and we didn't talk about them much at this year's meeting!

The NRA LE Multigun matches were how the NRA kind of found their way into 3-Gun and from what I hear, they're going really well and there are more of them all the time!

Wynn - you keep me honest!

    Denise

    i thought JJ did that!

  14. NRA sanctioned means just that! They sanction the match. The rules are up to the match keeping within some general safety guidelines. You need to check with the MD for rules for this match!

The NRA is supporting 3-Gun but not taking it over.

There's a package out there from the NRA to help new 3-Gun clubs start up and they're also adding some 3-Gun stages in their new NRA National Defense matches and in their...they're like postal matches, but I can't think of their name right now. They have stages you shoot and then send you a package to set it up and give awards. I'm sorry I can't think of it. Really tired after driving back from Michigan today!

Anyway, check with the match director for the rules!

Boy, that was the long way of saying that! :roflol:

    Denise

You are correct in that they just sanction the match. The NRA Tactical matches are hosted by various Law Enforcement entities and the rules for those matches can be found on the NRA website under Law Enforcemnt activities. Their website takes a little effort to track down everything, but go to law enforcement comptetitions, then to tactical matches (Just below Gunny's video.)
  15. "So its HM for me at least for another year, although if MD's insist on not painting targets, or not using contrasting backers, or going with smaller than 4moa targets, then after trying to beat sense into heads for the last 8 years or so, the thing to do may be play with a magnified optic, a mouse gun, and cheaper ammo.

    trapr"

amen brother! the one match i really love to shoot WILL NOT paint the steel. i liked the contrasting backers at the Ozark match, however they were not used on all steel. ???? i like the idea of having a special bunch of people who tape, paint, re-set and have tip-jars at each stage.( like 4H, Boy Scouts, Future Farmers, etc.) un-plug those deaf ears out there!
