  1. I want to know why the 'over 55' And who voted for that option.

Some of the Rio guys keep asking for "old fart" tees @ RM3G, basically start closer, so what the heck. No idea who voted for it though.

i am not from Rio. but if you ask Denise who started the 'Senior Citizen Shooting Boxes' request, you find it was me. all in fun. i use a scope nowadays because i can't see the doggone iron sights anymore, but i used to shoot heavy metal iron sights. i do not think we should allow bipods in anything but open class.

  4. I handled some 21" and 24" guns at the Rio Salado Multigun match this past weekend. The 24" didn't seem too much longer, and met the right combination of availability and price for me. Hopefully it will show up at my dealer by the end of the week.

    have you tried Gunbroker.com ?

  5. Just got my z6i BRT. It came with a throw lever from Swarovski. It the installation instructions it specifically mentioned it was for 3-gun use. For those looking for a lever, I'm sure it could be purchased seperately.

i was wondering where you bought yours? i just got mine in last week and it did not come with a cat tail. let me know where you got yours and i will give them a call. thanx,

  6. I did some dry firing last night to try out the push-pull method with my Mossberg 590 and the first thing I noticed is that the stock is too long. There is no way I can comfortably reach the fore end in a squared-off stance with the butt firmly against my shoulder. I'm 5'10" and, assuming that the she is shorter, Lisa is probably getting beat up because she has to use a bladed stance and can't securely set the stock against her body.

I was looking to get a semi-auto but now I'm on a mission to make the pump work first. I'll have a shorter stock before the match Saturday so I can try the push-pull method correctly (or as correctly as I can understand it from a internet video) and I'll see how it works.

    bdpaz,

Exactly...I'm shorter. I have the shortest, legal barrel I could have and put an adjustable buttstock with a good pad. Benelli is definitely the way to go but can't afford one right now.

What is your opinion of the bladed stance? I thought the rear leg helps with the recoil, no?

rear leg helps with recoil. keep your shoulders more squared to the target and keep the buttstock in the pocket of the shoulder, more onto the collarbone than out on the shoulder muscle. that keeps the recoil in a straight line backward, not in the direction of the bladed position.right handed shooters who blade off have the gun recoil more to the right. with the shoulders squared more into the target the recoil goes more into the whole body, travelling down the back into the leg and not just into the point of the shoulder.

    i hope this helps.

  7. Okay, times they are a-changin'. The discussion about 1X optics in tac irons has got me thinking, and I've come up with a division concept I want to run by the 3-gun world here and see what sort of discussion it creates. Here goes:

Open: Let the arms race begin. Open means open. Saiga drums, Xrails, lasers, monster muzzle brakes, whatever. If someone wants to build a 1919A6 in 20 gauge, go for it. This division should be the lab where gear is grown. As long as it’s safe, legal, and meets minimum caliber/gauge requirements, bring it, run it, and make us all want one.

Modified: Tactical Optics under a different name. The same equipment rules would apply. This division makes up the bulk of the game, leave it alone.

Limited: Here’s where things start to get different. Pistol rules same as Modified. 1X optic or irons on the rifle. 30rd mags only. Same comp/brake limitations as Tac Optics. PUMP shotguns that otherwise conform to Modified rules. This is the “stuff I have in the safe anyway” or “stuff that’s cheap to get and I should have in the safe anyway” class. You could buy all the gear you need to win this class for under $2K, probably well under.

Heavy Metal: Now things are starting to get complicated. Heavy Metal isn’t a stand-alone division. If a shooter chooses to compete in any of the 3 divisions with a rifle of .308 caliber or above (20rd mag limit), a pistol of .45ACP or above (8 rd mag limit), or a revolver of .38Spl or above, the shooter can neutralize paper targets with the “heavy metal option” (1 shot only on target with an A or B zone hit). The “heavy metal” gun must otherwise conform to the requirements of the chosen division.

The number of targets neutralized using the heavy metal option can be totaled for the whole match and used to recognize/reward the top HM shooters. (such as highest number of “HMO” targets in each division, total match time divided by HMO targets, etc.)

Here’s the advantages I think this system would bring to our game:

Makes fewer, but larger divisions: As much as I would love to see it, I don’t think Tac Irons (without 1X optics anyway) or HM is going to get any bigger than it is now. Shooting against 6 or 7 folks is still fun, but shooting against 60 or 70 is way more fun. I think I’ve come up with a way to fold iron sights and HM into larger pools of competition while still allowing them to remain competitive.

Gets pump-guns out of Heavy Metal: It seems in my talking to HM shooters, and shooting a few matches in HM myself, that the pump shotgun is the least favorite part of HM. It also encourages the use of the lightest 12ga loads one can find, which IMHO kinda defeats the whole purpose.

Gives pump-guns a bigger place to play: The pump shotgun needs a place in 3-gun, because it’s cheap, and everybody already has one. I would venture that in looking at “defensive” type shotguns alone, pumps outnumber autoloaders by at least 20 to 1 in the US.

Limited is a great entry-level division: Most “gun people” these days seem have an AR with a dot on it, a pump shotgun that either already holds or can easily be made to hold 9 rounds, and a good defensive pistol. A zillion new combat vets are coming back from durkadurkistan with time behind a 1X optic, and a ton of them come home and immediately buy one for themselves. Dot-sighted patrol rifles are becoming more and more prevalent in law enforcement. I personally carry all the gear I would need to shoot in this division in my car everywhere I go.

What say you, 3-gun? (flame suit on) Like I usually say when I'm throwing out my addled musings; I'm not trying to change the world, I just try to think about ways to improve and grow the game, and encourage everyone to do the same.

    DanO

Flame thrower is lit. not one whit of sense in changing heavy metal. you might not be used to stroking something that long, but a pump shotgun is the way to go.

  8. There are a couple things that can cause this, the lightweight carrier may be some of it, but may not be ALL of it....

Check your magazine and make sure the feed lips are in good shape and aren't damaged. That can cause a lot of drag and remove energy from the BCG.

What kind of condition are your gas rings in? If they're way too tight it can cause resistance inside the carrier. you should be able to hold the BCG by the bolt and it not "unlock". If it takes some significant pressure to unlock the bolt in the carrier I'd suggest replacement of the rings just as I would if it fell free under the weight of the carrier. When you replace, make SURE the groove is clean!

Once replaced, clean and lube the whole assembly according to the manual. AR's don't like to be dry.

Also, make sure you're not riding the charging handle home. Pull it all the way back, and let it go. Or, use the bolt release. (that thing could be dragging on your carrier, but highly doubtful)

Next check your extractor, it may have some burrs or a lot of crud built up in it causing it to bind and not slip over the cartridge rim.

    Hope this helps!

    Ken

plus 1. ARs like lube and cleanliness. also SLINGSHSOT the charging handle in a manly manner. case check ammo.

  9. I have taped a round to the gun before. Was barely on there but technically all ammo was on the gun/belt.when the gun came up, ripped the shell off the tape on the mount so it was in hand

That's some real gamesmanship!!! I like it.

with my luck, i would have loaded the tape with the shell. what fun! Safariland makes a two round holder that fits the belt. i put mine right in front so if i think i need it, i can reach right away and load them.

  10. Kurt, what can be done different w/ the 5x5 targets to keep them from shooting back?

Cheryl- good thing Michael can shoot a rifle better than a camera!!!! :)

I was about to PM the same thing Bryan. Ours are like everybody elses as far as I know & they were new. I'm thinking slope at abou 15 degrees is all a guy could do different. I think a couple things came into play, we let ppl get pretty close due to no fault lines & spectators were allowed close to the action too. I'd say in the end nobody would choose to change that as it was a matter of "free will" & I'm all about that.

    Ruf

weld a lip on the base that covers the horizontal base thus presenting another vertical plane for the bullets to impact and divert from. this also prevents them from turning sideways.

  11. I found this place by accident, a pretty good price for Federal xm193

    http://www.glensoutdoors.com/Federal-XM193-5-56-x-45mm-55-Grain-FMJ-BT-500-Ro-p/xm193f.htm

    Jeff

This deal worked out to be 310.00 shipped to the las Vegas area. A great price for XM193 hot ammo.

They are showing out of stock, been that way since someone posted this a few days ago.

    MLM

i picked up some Hornady at ammunitiontogo.com for about 280 per 1000, plus shipping.

  12. BTW ,Anybody know what happened to the guys rifle/mag that "blew up" (for lack of better word) on stage 6??

Looked like it split just under picatinny rail from the front about 3" back and the mag was bulged pretty badly in 2 places, with ALOT of smoke comming out of the mag.

Seemed to me maybe a cartridge may have exploded in the mag, how is that possible?

Could have been an over pressured round, the brass was still stuck in the chamber after it was all said and done. The top of the receiver just under the rail was split all the way back to the charging handle on one side and about an inch or so peeled up in the front, but looks like it was stopped by the scope ring. The bottom of the bolt carrier also split and peeled down about an inch. The magazine was bulged out where it comes out from the magwell and above the extension (Tripp Super 42) and a few of the top rounds in the magazine were damaged from the bolt carrier.

it was a round in the mag that went. the round that was being fed into the chamber was creased pretty bad. Steve is still scratching his head trying to figger it out.

  13. When you say Battle Rifle, that specifically excludes the little tiny Black Rifle. Wiht that in mind My choice would be an M-14/M1A. .308 will take anything on earth, although bigger than Elk gets dicey! It has great penetration for when the Zombies hide behind cars and such...(although the same can be said for any good .308) It has a great sight radius, it is very reliable and very robust, it can take a bayonet, and of the Battle Rifles out there it is one of the lightest and has the least bolt mass so recoil is very managable. Make Mine and M1A.

BAYONET!?? "Sergeant, if i have bullets, why is there a human on the end of my rifle?" (in response to instruction on how to remove stuck bayonet.)
