  1. Thought about that but the barrel is marked 9X19 so I did feel like that was a good idea if I ever sold it.
  2. My new gun is an STI Eagle in 9mm with Dawson CRP package. I also have another 1911 in 9mm besides this STI so I really don't "need" two single stack 9's. I do agree with you having a 9mm and 38 super don't really seem like the best idea. I always wanted a super, don't know why. Guess it was a cheap way to get a super, just don't know if I would use it that much either with the cost of factory ammo.
  3. I have a STI 1911 in 9mm. Don't shoot it much anymore since I got my new gun about a year ago, so I started trying to figure out what to do with the old one? Here is what I came up with so far: 1. Convert it to 38 super. Cost about $325.00 for barrel and fitting. Then I'd have both 9mm and 38 super barrels interchangeable. 2. Convert to 40 SW by cutting a new breech face in the existing slide, new barrel. Cost about $475.00. Permanent conversion to 40. 9mm barrel/bushing excess. 3. Convert to 40 SW with a new top end fitted to the bottom end. Cost about $780.00. One gun 2 calibers. All these prices are from one place, so I haven't really shopped around to see if I could get it done by someone else for less. What are your opinions and experiences? Thanks
  4. DVC is 9mm are 9x19. The limited gun will probably run in the 9mm off the shelf. But the DVC 9mm open guns are geared to run 9mm "major" which is a higher pressure 9mm load. That being said many open 9mm guns don't run well with factory off the shelf 9mm ammo unless you change out springs and such for them to do that. So if you are looking at an open gun in 9mm reloading, careful reloading, is your best alternative.
  5. Sounds like the Sig is a good one. I've been looking at several different makes of 1911 in 40 cal. Sounds like the Sig will run out of the box with factory length ammo. Any modifications that you made and want to share would be good to know. Thanks
  6. Anybody own one, shoot one, or have any experience with Sig Sauer 1911 Traditional Match in 40 S&W? I'd like to get a 1911 in 40 S&W just wondering how this one stacks up as far as reliability, accuracy, etc. What kind of experience you have had either good or bad. And does it like factory ammo or is this a reloads only gun? Thanks
  7. Measure your front sight height above the slide with a dial caliper. Then go to Dawson's web page. You'll need to decide what width you want but there's a lot of combinations of heights and width's. And if you want fiber optic, black, or night sights. Since your rear sight is adjustable it shouldn't have much trouble.
  8. No it's not Steel Challenge. It's more of an USPSA style match, walls, fault lines, barrels, barricades, etc. Kind of a run and gun thing with plate racks, texas star, individual plates, static steel, poppers, etc. Usually anywhere from 25 to 35 and up steel targets per stage. Seems like there are a couple of ranges around here that do these kinds of shoots. I appreciate everyone's experiences. Sounds like any of the mag choices would be good. I realize it's a personal preference to some degree. I'm just wanting a mag that will hold and run with 22 or 23 rounds. For me those extra 5 or 6 rounds above my 126mm will help eliminate a mag change on some stages. Still looks like cost wise it's pretty close between MBX and a tuned up STI mag. Thanks you all for your incite.
  9. I appreciate all the input. I am interested in the 9mm mags and round counts. Reason I'm looking at mags is because I have been shooting some local steel matches that allow for up to 140mm in limited. I get 18 in my stock STI 126mm, so when I saw that the stock 140 in 9mm show a gain of 2 rds to 20 I didn't feel that was a big increase. I knew some of you more experienced shooters were getting more rounds by modifications to the mags. Best deal I can find for STI 140 mags is about $64.00 (tubes only at $59.00). Grams Spring and followers about $17.00. Dawson S.N.L base pads $32.00. Total about $113 assuming I use the spacer in the STI factory mag. That's from a couple of dealers so with shipping about $16.00 I'm at about $124.00 to 129.00 for one mag. Of course more mags would be a little less per mag with combined shipping. Would there be some "tuning" required to the STI mag? I have read something about "salt shaker" in STI mags, I guess that's where the bottom round rolls off the follower jamming the mags. How big a problem is that? At first I thought the MBX mags might be high but if my pricing is close there is not a lot of difference after you build up the STI mags. Thanks for helping a newbie out.
  10. Looking at getting some 140mm 9mm mags for my STI gun. All of a sudden it's quite confusing. You have STI, MBX, and SVI. That all I know so far. STI shows to hold 20 rds, while MBX has 23-24, and I'm not sure about SVI. I know you can change followers, springs and base pads to up the round count on some mags. Price for "stock" mags start at $60 up to $130. My questions are what is the best bang for the buck? Buy the MBX that's already tuned and ready to go or buy the other two and replace parts? What are most of you doing and what kind of parts are you using in rebuilt mags and what kind of round numbers will they hold? Thanks for the help in advance.
  11. Hey thanks for the information. I'm kind of trying to get other peoples opinions on the grips before I spend my money. Especially how they stack up to the stock STI grip. I appreciate it.
  12. I'm looking for someone with experience on both the Extreme Shooter Grip - The DVC Advantage - STI Grip and the standard STI factory Grip. On the extreme web site it say that these grips have the full reduction and are for the medium to small hands. It also says these are the same grips that are on the DVC. I know they make an extra small grip and I am not referring to that one. I am wondering just how much smaller these grips, or the DVC Advantage grips are than the factory STI grips. I am think about changing out my factory grips on my STI Eagle for a set of these. I don't really need a lot of reduction as the standard grip size is about right. I'm just looking for a little more aggressive texture mostly and a slight reduction would be ok. Don't want the extra small one. If you have both factory STI grip and a DVC Advantage grip can you give me your impression on these DVC Advantage style grips. How much of a reduction is there over the factory size of the STI grip? Thanks
  13. We call them grease rings. It's caused by the powder residue in the barrel being transferred to the bullet as the bullet passes through the barrel and then rubbing off on the cardboard as it passes through.
  14. Thanks for the info. How do you all like them compared to the original grip that comes on the STI 2011?
  15. Are the extreme shooters grip legal in IDPA divisions ESP and CDP? In reading the rules I think they are but I'm not 100% sure. Second question does the Dawson Precision Tactical 2011 mag well fit on the extreme shooters grip or has the grip been reduced to much for the mag well to fit tight? Thanks
  16. Thanks guess not many people use them. Do they have steel followers and removable floor plates?
  17. I have been looking for some 8 rd mags for my .45 acp. On Dawson's web sight they have blue STI 8 + 1 rd 45 acp mags. These appear to be less expensive than Tripps or Wilson or the rest on the web sight at $29.00 each. Anybody use these and have a comment as to how they have functioned, held up, etc.? Thanks
  18. If you really want to know how lined up it is, you can try this. Size and deprime and empty case. Remove the firing pin from the slide. Load the empty deprimed case in the gun and put a light on one end and look thru the other. You can see how well it all lines up. But basically from looking at the pictures your off by about 1/2 the diameter of the firing pin. I wouldn't be overly concerned as long as it shoots good. And if you really want to know which way it's off you will have to mark the edge of a loaded round and reference the mark with how it is loaded into the barrel. Shoot it and see which way it is off.
  19. Thanks, I kind of figured you could but wasn't to sure. Not worried about 120's fitting more interested in getting the 126 in and them being flush. Plus if I can find one in 9mm I've got the mags covered.
  20. Thought I would ask but can you put a full size grip (for the 126mm mags) on a STI VIP? I'm pretty sure the VIP grip is shorter since it comes with 120mm mags. If so is it a direct swap or requires gun smith fitting? Thanks
  21. I have both an STI Trojan and a Dan Wesson Pointman in 9mm. Hands down the PM-9 Dan Wesson is the better gun. Best out of the box trigger, better fit and finish. Add a magwell and some 10 round mags and your ready to play. I haven't shot any Springfield's but I have played with dozens and all of them could use trigger work out of the box. Fit has been hit and miss on many. As for the Taurus, I'd probably steer clear if your are planning on shooting a lot as in 1,000's of rounds. I just don't think the quality is there over the long haul for a competition pistol IMHO.
  22. Sound more like a binding issue with the trigger. There shouldn't be that much difference in the trigger pull on a 1911 unless something isn't fit quite right. I'd take it back to the gun smith that put the SVI trigger in it. Even if you want a curved trigger I'd get it fixed before I swapped trigger shoes.
  23. Do these have the full size grips that flush fit (somewhat) a 126 mm mag as opposed to the 120mm in the VIP?
