  1. I am actually building the same thing this weekend. At the Ironman this year we had to shoot at some steel that was about 25 yards away or so underneath a car. They where small 3-4" plates that flew off the stands when you hit them. Kind of a tough target since you have to figure where to hold since your gun is sideways. Anyways I have decided that 6-10" seems about right for shooting under a car. I will do some more measuring but I am leaning towards 8".
  2. No we were trying to be tactical class. I figure if I can turn into Superman then I can see through walls and am bulletproof so like regular tactics are thrown out the window. Too bad Superman had never been taught how to load a gun fast before and hit the first two targets with something more then just his laser vision. Next year he should do better since he has been shown how it works.
  3. Yeah thats me. And Bryan was there going for the Tinkerbell look. There is a chance that you see a freak in blue spandex with a red S next year running a stage. And I hear Tinkerbell is thinking about being Peter Pan green tights and all. -Dave
  4. My suggestions look like they have already been discussed but here is my take on it. I think that the penalty or bonus should be a lot more than 60 seconds for using the Zipline and the Tower. Any big thing you guys build should either be mandatory or a huge penalty like maybe 120 seconds or even the 300 second penalty for slug/rifle on pistol steel. I also wouldn't mind some style points for my Superman cape on the zipline. This was my first Ironman and it was awesome. Thanks for the match and I look forward to being there next year. Happy Shooting, Dave
  5. I really like Shooting From Whithin by Plaxco
  6. I do not know if mine is the quicker detach or not (I think it is the slow detach) but I do have the extended bolt catch and I like it a lot. Without it, its a pain to use the bolt catch. Overall I have been very happy with my redi-mag for the past year or so and will soon be putting it on my other ar-15's as well. -David
  7. The last two weekends I have flown into Ontario, CA and Houston, TX out of Salt Lake and like everyone else has mentioned every airport/airline employee handles it differently. Most of the time they just have me open the case right there and then they have me show them the weapon is empty and then I sign the form and put the slip on the top. In Houston they have me take my luggage back into a private corner and show the guy. As long as your weapons are empty and are in a hard locked case with no ammo then you are fine. If you are afraid of an employee stealing your guns make sure to get extra insurance. It is cheap and it is worth it. As for ammo I learned a lot. The TSA/FAA has no limit as to how much ammo you can take on a plane BUT every airline has a very tight limit. Southwest was 11 pounds Continental is 12 pounds if I remember correctly. Basically plan for 10 pounds and under. That is of course assuming they know their employers rules. In the past I had never said anything because I didn't know the airlines had their own rules and I have taken a lot of ammo several times without a problem. Once I told an employee and everything fell apart. I had to have my sister drive back to the airport and pick up my ammo and once I got to California I had to buy more ammo. So in the future I will just ship it ahead of time. But if you forget to ship it and want to give it a chance just don't tell the airline employee you have it. After you check in your luggage wheel it over to the TSA and tell them instead. As long as it is in factory packaging in a seperate container from your guns you will be OK. The best way is to plan ahead and ship your ammo ahead of time. And by ahead of time I mean plenty of time for it to get there by truck. Overnight only works on FedEx after you pay an additional $30 for hazardous material and then the weight of the ammo takes the price up a lot more. -David
  8. I like the Tangodown Battlergrip.
  9. His visit to the FBI is one of the funniest thing ever. Ali G is one of the reasons they invented Tivo.
  10. I love mine. I have had it for a few months and it shoots great. The trigger is excellent and the gun is accurate. I run an EOtech on a Larue mount and freefloated it with a Larue rail. If you are using it only for competition you would probably want to build a dedicated gun but if it is to serve as an all round carbine I think it is a great choice. -David

    Books

Books that I read and re-read regularly. The Scriptures Literature Screwtape Letters Atlas Shrugged Fountain Head Enders Game Huckleberry Finn Without Remorse Shooting Books Surgical Speed Shooting Principles of Personal Defense Practical Shooting Shooting from Within Trading Books Hedge Fund Edge How to Make Money in Stocks Trader Vic Trader Vic 2 Reminisces of a Stock Operator Market Wizards New Market Wizards Stock Market Wizards Fooled by Randomness Education of a Speculator Practical Speculation Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets Winning on Wall Street I read a lot and have read all of these books multiple times. No, I am not an amazing shooter but I do practice a lot and everytime I get in a slump I read shooting books and I find that they help a lot. I am not amazingly wealthy but I have a lot more money then I used to and keep getting better at my trading. I am also a stockbroker so one of my two biggest interests is also a big part of my job. As for fiction there are not many that I go back and read multiple times because I don't get a lot out of them very often the second time. Whereas a good book that goes over what to and how to do something and helps you to build a framework to be successful at it are very good the first time and get better as your understanding of the subject matter grows. -David
  12. I would also suggest videotaping some of your dry and live fire. I find it useful to catch bad habits from developing too much.
  13. Our local club does 2 fun shoots a month with 3 stages each and round count varies from 80 ish to about 120. Everything is scored IDPA but you are allowed any type of handgun and accessories. When we do our official IDPA matches we do anywhere from 3 stages to I think 8 stages. Our fun shoots are indoors and our official matches are outside so the real matches have a whole lot more shooting stations. -David
  14. I am looking at buying an extension tube for my 870 and am wondering what people have found to be the best company or if there is even a noticeable difference. I am looking at Wilson, Tacstar, and Choate. Thanks, David
