  1. Interesting my main action pistol sport is IDPA. I started with a Walther PPQ 4 inch barrel, its a great pistol shoots straight and I love the grip. The only reason I moved to a G17 4.5 inch barrel was I could customize the trigger group in the G17 a lot easier than the Walther. I lust after the Walther 5" PPQ M2 but I think I'd have the same problem with the trigger group. I've got a modified trigger group in my G17 that results in a 2-3 lb pull and man does it break crisply and have a short reset. Thing is there is so many after market parts to modify Glocks, nto so for Walthers. However the Walther pistol line has the best ergonomic grips out there. I still have my PPQ QA and its a keeper. Now if I can only learn to shoot those long barrel things
  2. I usually sell a gun to buy a gun, I'm selling my tried and true Ruger Red Label 12 ga over under (an American Classic) to buy my Beretta 1301, at least thats what I told my wife. My real new gun is my JP-15, my first rifle. I have not told my wife about that yet. I usually use the excuse I buy quality weapons so I can sell them if we need the money. Then there is the old home defense excuse. I think besides the weapons you can spend a lot on the "extras" in three gun. Thats where I'm going to hold off, maybe I'll hit an Army/Navy store.
  3. wow that depresses me I just started I decided to start with great equipment and just bought a Beretta 1301 and ordered a JP-15 ready not go out of the box (ouch on the price). I'm set on the pistols as I shoot IDPA. I held off on the optic and all the rest. I'm going to learn the game locally first before I buy any more fancy stuff. Here in NE most of the matches are 100-200 yrds max.
  4. Thanks I think I'll stay local for now and just learn the game.
  5. I'm gearing up 3 gun, just dropped a lot of money on a JP-15. I deliberately did not buy and optic until I get some more experience. I'd be interested in what some more experienced guys think about this product
  6. I'm gearing up for 3 gun this season, your post was a good motivator. Hear in New England 35 degrees is like summer. I can't wait to shoot one. Got to get my gear together first. Action pistol and skeeting shooting are my hobbies, but the whole AR thing is new to me. thx
  7. Well I guess I'll join the club, just ordered a 1301 and im planning to get into 3 gun.
  8. Thx, it will be interesting to see what you get when you chrono the 124s. Please post your results. 1245 seems fast for a 9 mm 115 gr, that gives you a PF of 143. To meet a pistol PF in IDPA for a 115 gr bullet you need at least 1089 fps. Since I am not familiar with rifle loads and there is no info on using 9mm in rifles I'm wondering what the best weight bullet and load is for ARs for 3 gun since the PF limitations do not apply. I would guess for close up (<50 yrds) it will not matter. I think I read somewhere the bullet speed increases about 20-30 fps per inch of barrel. If pistol loads are tested in a 4.5 inch barrel then I would guess you expect a higher velocity for the same load for a 21 to 26 inch barrel or whatever the JP-GMR length is. I would interested if you load to max load or close for your 124s to get a higher velocity. Maybe I should just call JP and ask them;
  9. I am intrested in getting into 3 gun. I shoot a G17 in IDPA. I also reload 9mm. it seems like the JP-CMR-13 is the same way to go if you want to match your AR to your pistol and you shoot Glock. One commenter indicated he questioned using the 9mm round and the lack of blow back power compared to the heavier rounds. Anymore views on that. For the pistol I reload 147 gr to a low power factor and a 890 fps vel. What is the typical velocity expected for an AR 9mm? Anyone use coated lead bullets in an AR? thx
  10. As a relatively new reloader/shooter (started reloading in Jan 2012) I'm up to about 8000 rds of 9mm 147 gr in a Dillon 550B. I started reloading during the mess when you could not get components so I did not have the luxury to start with a consistent set of bullets, powder or primers. Now that I have finally got my training wheels off I'm getting more selective on my chice of components. My bullet choices started with Berrys or MG and now Bayou. While my initial selections were driven by avaibablity rather than perfomance I just got my first 1000 of Bayou and chronoed them last weekend. They reloaded great and I did not have a single failure using my case guage over 300 rds. Typically I'd get 1-2 failures on the Berrys per 300 rds (don't know why). For my skill set Accuuracy was fine and the recoil seemed less at a lower powder charge. I'm sold on Bayou as long as they are in stock. For the Bayou I dropped by powder charge by about .3 grns compared to the Berrys/MG and still get the same PF. I use 231 for practice and I'm going to use Tite group for matches but I have not used it yet. and yes Donnie is a great guy he spent some time with me on phone and did not give me that "attitude" you get sometimes when you ask new shooter/reloader questions. He also said spring is there, the gators are stiring. if that could only happen up here.
  11. Wow, jealous bunch aren't they? Nahhhhhhh. people just bein petty... did'nt you mean people just being pretty
  12. What I have noticed is that when I am in the open I am usually moving, if I can dump a few extra rounds and go to slide lock I will and reload in the open. I usually fire a couple of extra rounds anyway when I am on the move. Otherwise I just go to the next postion and reload there.
  13. I am relatively new action pistol shooter, and I just returned from my second club match under the new rules ( I have about 15 matches under the old rules). I had a good time no PEs, the COF was clear but challenged your skills. There were no big arguments only some reminders to reload from cover unless you go to slide lock in the open. The match was full and everyone had a good attitude, I did not hear much bitching at all (I did hear a lot of that at a regional). I also joined USPSA and went to a few local club matches in 2013, I told some of the guys in my USPSA squad I shoot IDPA and I was loudly told IDPA "sucks". I kept my mouth shut after that but I have noted that many of the USPSA guys I meet seem to very vocal about their hate of IDPA, I do not see it the other way around. I'm going to shoot both but so far I have enjoyed the IDPA matches more than USPSA, IDPA makes me think harder about what I am going to do, I enjoy that. I'll just stay away from the haters and enjoy myself.
  14. I recieved my order of Bayou 9mm 147 gr FN and chrono them today. I measured the volume in the case with seated bullets at the same die setting volume=OAL-bullet length. I left the die setting on the Dillon 550B at same length I had set for my Berrys 147 grn RN (1.14 OAL). The Berrys gave me a volume of .465. The Bayou seated at a OAL of 1.10 at this setting and the volume was .423. So Increased the OAL of the Bayou to 1.14. I chronoed the Bayou at a OALs of 1.10 and 1.14. I was happy with the accuracy and noticed a differnce in recoil particulary with 3.5 grns 231 vs my std practice rounds of 3.8 grns of 231 for a Berrys CMJ RN. I noticed a slight but not unpleasant smell and little if any smoke. I think I'm going to like these bullets, no feed problems at either OAL. I'm loading for a PF of 125 with some safety margin added. Here are the results string 1 OAL=1.10 ave=975 SD=21 231=3.8 grns string 2 OAL=1.14 ave=963 SD=20 231=3.8 grns string 3 OAL=1.14 ave=905 SD=12 231=3.5 grns
  15. Thanks we are on the same page. I have heard they take abt 0.3 gr or so less than the plated bullets You are literally on the same page. Actually on the other side of the page my seating die is the standard Dillion 9mm. With my MG flat nose it gave me a 1.10 OAL, with the Berrys RN it gave me a 1.145. I'll have to see what the Bayou Bullets seat at. I believe most of the difference in OAL is due to the diffence in the bullets length between the RN and FN bullets. BTW I bought a vacation retirement house near Southport NC, I cannot wait to get out of this gdam state/weather and have the freedom to purchase competition pistols to my liking.
  16. Thanks we are on the same page. I have heard they take abt 0.3 gr or so less than the plated bullets
  17. I shoot a G17 in IDPA and I load my Berrys RN to guess what 1.145! So maybe I can load these bad boys with no adjustments, sweet.
  18. I realize this is an old thread so I hope the folks on it are still around. I'm thinking of buying some Bayou bullets a number of the guys that I know in IDPA load them to low PF and seem to love them. The price is right and there is minimal smoke. I reload 9mm FN or RN 147 gr I have been using MG or Berrys. Powders I use Win 231 for practice and Tite Group for matches. Any experience with these regarding OAL and crimp. I treat lead exposure seriously so I want to minimize the smoke. Thx Much
  19. I have been careful when upgrading my external parts to use OEM equipment. The drop in trigger group I used from Glocktriggers.com uses only OEM equipment. my extended slide release and extended mag release are OEM's parts. The only internal part that is non-OEM is the extended striker. I have been told that under the new rules that is legal (in IDPA). As the other poster cited above I consider that internal reliability work.
  20. I just document the drills in a bound log book where I also put my notes down. I think writing up notes right after the session is very important i.e. I was not shooting well until I re-focused on the front site, I was shooting low and left because I was pulling the trigger too hard or I've got to get a good grip and a good site picture and stop worrying about the timer. I could go on and on. I was thinking of drawing up a log sheet based on Seeklander's but I know I'll keep my log book with me. Its a running narrative of my shooting events, I'm going to start documenting the results and impression of matches in it too.
  21. Thanks I use my 550B only for handgun. Right now only for 9mm. I was think of selling my 550B and getting a 650 but I've only loaded for a year and I'm finally really used to my machine. If I add the casefeeder I'll be a production rate that's acceptable even if I am manually indexing. I might get a revolver and try 38s but that's in the future.
  22. Ok after reading thru these posts I noticed they stretch over a couple years. So what I wanted to ask, are the problems with the case feeder for the 550B 9mm ironed out? I have a newer 550B, I have loaded about 6000 rds, I pretty much have all the bugs worked out. However I'd really like to increase by production rate without sacrificing quality. I load about 150 rds/per hr and I need to increase my production for this next shooting season.
  23. Welcome to action shooting I'm from central Mass and belong to Harvard sportsman club. Hopkington is a great club you will find some experienced guys down there. I started reloading and action shooting (mostly IDPA) in 2013. Its a lot of fun and despite the anti gun laws threre are a lot great clubs and IDPA/USPSA events in New England. Good think is with an hour drive you can get to most of them. This forum also is a great place to get answers on reloading, training, and pistol modifications. welcome
  24. about internal trigger/striker work? I'm using a extended striker to minimize light stikes in a glock
  25. What is grains of water? obviously its the weight of water for a certain volume. I have never heard of Noiser. BTW weight/volume=density or specific gravity. In my field we use the density of liquid chemicals relative to water to determine if its a floater or a sinker. I'm curious to learn how it is used in reloading thx
