There's a lot of talk in this thread about if new shooters have to compete heads up against the big dogs, that they will be intimidated and never come back...I really don't think that is the case.
These are the things that discourage n00bs from getting involved:
The mere existence of the big dogs and their widely publicized exploits discourages John Q. Gun Owner from becoming involved. I often hear, "I will never be as good as (insert name here)"...I tell these people while neither am I, just get out have fun, and do your best.
The perception that they do not have the right equipment to even try competing...I tell these people skill will hold them back longer than equipment, bring out your gear and see if it works as well as advertised
and the big one...
EGO! In the past several years I have met quite a few individuals who have talked a lot of smack before even shooting a match, go to a match totally sucked, then come up with all kinds of excuses as to why they did poorly. Some people just can't handle the fact that there are others out there who are better than them.
Classification based on skill seems asanine to me, and a good way to make people complacent. If you win D class, well 60% of the people there are still better than you. Getting beat by people who are better than you is a character building and learning experience.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with several of the posters. If your mindset is such that you are using 3 gun as a venue to practice gun handling and marksmanship, I would suggest using your iron sights (if that's all you're issued). If the rifle/carbine has inherent short comings using it regularly will help you develope skill and perhaps techniques to work around those short comings. Start out with the flat top M4 with detach carry handle...buy optics later if you feel you need them or if you end up getting issued them, you can outfit your rifle to be the same.
On the other hand if you feel Uncle Sam is giving you enough training ammo and range time with your M4, by all means build whatever you feel you need to have more fun shooting 3 Gun in your free time.
It all comes down to what YOUR goals are, and what YOU are trying to accomplish by competing.

At the Ironman you need one A hit or two hits to neutralize on the paper targets for rifle and pistol.
I called MGM today and the published round counts are for 1 A hit ONLY . If you dont plan to shoot all A hits double the round counts for rifle and pistol. Then add ammo for misses. A word to the wise.
Glad you found that out...

Glock just came on board as a sponsor with 2 certificates good for any Glock Pistol!

Rain isn't so bad...cold isn't so bad either....combine them and they test my patience. SMM3G this year was pretty brutal, but I stuck it out.
I need to get some cold/wet weather shooting gloves, the nomex gloves I have didn't cut it at all...but then again I never expected 35 degrees and rain at the same time in the Phoenix Metro area.

I wonder what I am then when I shoot in classes that put me at a deliberate disadvantage. If I want to shoot with the light on my Glock I have to shoot in Open. I carry the gun like this every day so its to my benefit to shoot with it on there. I use limited length magazine, and a carry holster.
I shot open in 3 gun for a while with a dot sighted pump action shotgun...no speed loaders. If I managed to beat anyone in the same division, I considered myself to be doing ok.
After all, we all enjoy taking our ass whippings like a man, don't we....?Well I shot the fort Benning 3 gun last December in Open. My only true open gun was my rifle with dual optics and a bipod. My Pistol was a "limited" gun, and the shotgun a Tactical class gun except for the optic on it. I shot against the best people in the country with equipment that put me at a disadvantage in that division...unsuprisingly I came in last place. I still had a good time, shooting and hanging out with people, and I learned some things.
I think the no classes - run what ya brung will really help the sport of shooting. I am sure that the average Mr. Everyone will really be thrilled to know that he will never in his entire shooting life be able to win a damned thing or get any recognition whatsoever. THIS seems really fair and smart to me.What will help people to get involved, and I am actively doing this, is putting on free intro to competition shooting classes to take away the intimidation factor. I tell people flat out that unless they are funded and all they do is shoot for a living, and have innate talent most of us are incapable of acheiving, they will never "win." Winning can be defined as achieving one's personal goals an objectives. Even if someone comes in last place every time, if they learned something about their own abilities or equipment through shooting competitively, they will not have "lost". The new shooters' goals, and I dare say the goals of most of us who fall somewhere in the middle most of the time, should be to have fun and better ourselves through this discipline.
Attendance at local multi-gun and pistol matches is steadily rising...

Got the gun back from Tromix today...
I was having a friend time me how long it took to change mags, and it was around 3.5-4 Seconds depending on which pouch I got it out of. I'm going to have to practice a lot to be able to get smooth with it.
I'm finding that hiting the mag release with my weak hand thumb after I've drawn a mag out already and swiping the mag out then rocking in the fresh mag seems to be the easiest most efficient way.
I had been trying a technique I learned for regular AKs, of hitting the mag release with the fresh mag and swiping it forward then rocking in the magazine...this method was faster for getting the empty mag out but harder to consistently get the fresh mag in due to the position of my hand on the mag.

I would like matches with no divisions but the gun and accessories you used are listed in the match results.

So would you all charging onto the range blasting the Team America theme song be considered unsportsmanlike conduct?

So here's the rig I put together for carrying Saiga, AR, and Glock mags for Ironman this year...
I can carry up to 13 Saiga mags on me. The lowest number of shells required on any one stage is 26 (all types), the highest number of shells required on any stage is 52 (all types).
Springfield M1A is on the line for first trooper class shooter...
My Saiga is going to be back from Tromix at the end of the week, w00t!

We're planning on having 2 night stages this year, one dark house and one 100 yard rifle (lights may or may not help you on that one)
There will be one moving vehicle stage
More zombie head shot action
More weak hand only shooting, even using your shotgun if you want.
Return of the dreaded 300 yard 60 rounds in 2 minutes stage...the past 2 years this stage alone has changed the outcome of the match., so know your hold over at 300.

Good luck guys...I'll come give one of your matches a try so long as the rules aren't too out there. I'm all for matches having different rules so long as they're logical and accomplish the goals the directors wish to achieve.
That said, I think the core IMGA rules are the most logical and can be easily modified to suit the match; i.e. MGM Ironman and Cavalry Arms 3 Gun.
This is a grassroots attempt at trying to get a true practical combat organization. The goal is to get a place that is less restrictive and encourages development of combat shooting.Based on this statement, there should be no equipment divisions whatsoever...life isn't fair, the bad guy isn't going to care if you're using various accessories and mag capacities. Scoring should be straight heads up with all equipment and shooters all judged against each other. If someone is using gear that is a dramatic advantage, well others should start using it too.
If you want to discourage heavily modified guns and practical equipment have a penalty for every time the firearm malfunctions during the course of fire.

Cool. hope you can make it!

I don't see a problem with being a sport...based in a martal art. There are lots of those.

Well a quick search on google of "practical shooting olympics" turned up this link.

Boy does this get the blood boiling

PS I was not looking for a fight. REALLY, I just wanted to see if in fact Practical Shooting was allowed to be a non-medal game in 2004. And this is the first link I got from google...
If those people hate us, we're doing something right....you will never be able to change their minds or influence them.

Cavalry Arms makes the only non-metallic AR lower out there and it's a great rifle, they are grreat guys and they support the sport too.
Just wanted to add that we now have a Practical Carbine Package that would be a good starter kit for someone wanting to shoot Tac Scope; http://www.cavalryarms.com/CAPCP.html
You can always add a match trigger and free float tube later.

Apparently a couple people are working on +2 extensions for the factory 5 rounders. A guy over on the saiga forum told me he is supposed to have some done by the end of May.
-
So I tracked down a source for 5 round Saiga mags...I have 15 on the way. FBMG in Utah has a few dozen more if anyone happens to be looking for them
I also have open topped .308 Tac Tailor mag pouches on the way, so I will be able to have at least 6 ready for fast access on my vest.
My Saiga should be back from Tromix in 2-3 weeks.

So even with the longer pin, if your hammer doesn't have the j-pin in it what keeps it from Walking out?
How many people would be interested in a run of long hammer pins meant to be used with C-clips to hold them in place? A friend of ours is storing his lathe at our shop, and he's looking for projects.

Here's what a shooter from Finnland did with his:

Actually I have gotten a lot more gun owners involved in shooting competitively, when I tell them it is a good place to practice their martial skills (gun handling and marksmanship), wring out their equipment, and have fun...everyone treating it like "bullet-golf" turns a lot of people who own guns off to it. I put on an intro to multi-gun class for free at our shop every month. Most of the time this class is full. I see many of these people at our local matches, some more often than others. Attendance at our local multi-gun matches is up at least 10-20% in the past year. If you want more people involved in the sport, make it appealing to the people who already have guns and gear.
The government does not recognize IPSC/USPSA or others as "sports", they are "shooting competitions that utilize military style firearms."
You won't convert hard core anti-gunners. Simply having an organized sport in which you use firearms, regardless of the stage design props etc, is enough to make it seem legitimate to most fence sitters.
I think knowing the audience you are designing the stages for is key...if you want to accomplish something with your match, and in doing so it offends some people, well they won't come back next year.

I shoot better with a sub-gun than with a pistol. I dunno about GMs, but shooting a sub-gun against people who are better than me with handguns I can usually do as well or better depending on the course of fire.
If you are forcing the sub-gun shooter to shoot on full-auto, of course they will be slower on most courses, particularly on things like plates that take only one round to neutralize.
Apparently I shoot weak hand only subgun, a lot better than most people shoot week hand only pistol; http://www.cavalryarms.com/3gun/2005results-2.jpg look at the results from stage 7

I should note that the 3.5 to 4 second time was mag pouches with retention; flaps or bunjee cords. With the bunjee cords undone, its about 2.5-3 Seconds
Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'm going to get to use my Saiga at the Texas State 3 Gun match next week. I'm sending it back to Tromix to get the gas ports dialed in so it will run with lighter loads...as it is, it will only cycle with 3-3/4 dram reliably on the high gas setting.
