We had 20+ people drop out in the past 3 days. I feel bad for turning some of you away now. Next time we will require pre-payment.
lots of pics and vids were taken today, those should be up soon too...

I think the slide release is located inconveniently on the Nova for lefties. Otherwise it is a pretty cool gun.
-
That really doesn't impress me since almost none of the dirt actually gets in the gun...

Anyone want to throw down with carbine sight radius guns in tac iron at SMM3G 2010? If so, I'm in.
....
Clamp on front sight at the comp of a 16"
Note I said carbine sight radius, no extra sights on the end of the barrel unless you have an 11.5" gun.

Finally took it apart to clean it last night. There was a lot of loose debris in the buffer tube. Given that the CAV-15 has more clearance in the buffer tube due to its structural rib system than a traditional AR15 tube, it could have aided in reliability:

Good point, one can be fairly competitive in Tac Scope with an M4 and any optic that can hold a zero. Try shooting an stock iron sighted M4 against a full on Limited/Standard/Tac Iron rifle and you are going to get an ass whipping.
Maybe I should shoot some matches with the 14.5" carbine I ran over with the jeep to prove that point LOL.
-
....By offering a cheap low cost division? NOPE, iron is gone. Now you need a $800 rifle and a $400 optic just to start ontop of the other stuff.
....
The most popular selling ARs are carbines with short sight radius that most people here would regard as non-competitive. We sell something like 50 M4 handguards for every one rifle length handguard if that gives you any idea of what type of guns are selling.
As it is, the average AR owner thinks he doesn't have the right equipment for 3 gun. I deal with this constantly trying to get new people out to shoot.
-
just give it to me Russel, I know you won't be able to load it with out a magazine.....
Well I may have to get one of these then:
-
I agree with Trapr. It is the stage design that drives equipment. It is almost never an advantage in 3 gun to use Iron sights, and it is never a disadvantage to use a magnified optic.
An example of how to show advantages and disadvantages of various equipment; I have stopped using my 3 Gun rifle with CQT at the AZ ACTS matches. Lots of non-conventional firing positions made using an optic with limited eye relief a disadvantage. I now just use an aimpoint because the stages make it an advantage to do so; I would be better off using irons there than something with limited eye relief because at least you can index to some degree when doing weird positions.
See this video for examples:

Soo......when are you going to bury some shotguns
Jim
I can get new ARs/fix ones I mess up a lot easier than I can get a new Saiga, Benelli, or whatever

Allow no magnification red dots

My argument is not that it is impossible for the AR15/M16 to malfunction in combat conditions, only that it is more reliable than people believe it to be.
Parma, ID has some nice moon dust type sand. Unfortunately testing there will have to wait until June 2010.
-
the dissent on the other forums has moved away from my AR test being too lame to all the excuses as to why the AK didn't work.
Apparently having the dust cover open on the AR is required, but we should have left the dust cover/safety on the AK closed L-O-L
-
Thesis: The AK type rifle is more reliable than AR15 type rifles
The Test: Fire one mag to confirm function, load rifle and bury in sand with dust cover/safety down, fire one magazine, repeat.
Results: The open areas of the AK type rifle allow dirt/dust to get into the action in large quantities, preventing them fire control from functioning. While a gas piston MAY be more reliable, the AKs fire control are more prone to outside fouling than those of an AR15
-
Thesis: The AR15 rifle is more reliable than people believe it to be.
The Test:
Part 1: Dust cover open and up, cover the rifle in sand and run 5 magazines through it.
Part 2: No cleaning conducted after part 1, Dust cover open and up, cover the rifle in sand and run it over with a Jeep, then run a magazine through it.
Results:
Part 1: The rifle functioned flawlessy with no malfunctions. The action was somewhat sluggish towards the end as oil cooked off and more dirt entered the action.
Part 2: The rifle did suffer two malfunctions that required combat racking, but otherwise ran. All lubrication was cooked off and there was sand in the action. The larger particles; small rocks, prevents the bolt from going all the way into battery twice. I honestly did not expect it to work at all at this point.
The CAV-15 receiver and C4 handguards survived without damaged. The CMMG upper was not damaged aside from finish wear.

dust cover open and running over test to be posted later...
-
the debate now is that I didn't leave the dust cover open, that shooting prone and roll over prone at the match didn't kick up THAT much dirt, and that it was ejection port down for the final segment when it was open....LOL some people will never be happy.
-
I just use rem oil and CLP most of the time and I generally run it pretty wet
-
I elected to make this video after numerous internet debates.
Thesis: The AR15 is more reliable in desert environments than commonly believed.
The Test: 4 repetitions of burying the rifle and firing 30 rounds, Shoot the match with the rifle without cleaning, Bury in the sand one more time with dust cover open and fire 30 rounds
Results: No malfunctions.
Video from camera angle 2 will be uploaded once I get a program that can edit quicktime files.

Kurt, if you write it you know it will be read. I hate losing knowledge because we don't ask for it. Besides it sound like a good reason to pour a scotch, light a good cigar and see where this all started!
That may end up something like this

Someone should really do a history of the sport wiki before this lore is lost to the ages

I have a Benelli M1 on the way that I couldn't pass up because it was super cheap and NIB. It has the factory rifle sights on it. I've used these before and I thought they were too low and you couldn't really zero for use with slugs. So what are the better options for iron sights?
Before the haterade drinkers pile on, I still have 3 Saiga-12s

How high is the clay launching? I've seen some of those things launch the clay 30-40 feet, and others only about 10.
