That would be my vote, no more divisions or classes
I concur with this, if it were an option.
The only useful purpose of divisions is to help attract new shooters that are worried they don't have fancy enough gear. Other than that, who cares.
-
This does strike me as somewhat logical. Another organization I participate in was recently discussing doing pretty much the same thing.
I have no problem shooting in open with a variable power optic, I already do often. And I still manage to place in the middle at national matches in Open when my only real open gun is my Saiga-12.
If Red Dot Sight-Tactical Whatever was a division it might give me reason to shoot a t00ber shotgun again.
While we are making changes, lets add a MOR Division, manually operated rifle, 1911 max 8 rounds in mag and pump shotgun. The cowboy action forum is that way ------>
2 more years and the 1911 will be 100 years old, maybe then they will include it as an antique for SASS

So it is an individual competition but there is a team shoot off?
Yes it is an individual competition. Team shoot off is at the end while scores are being calculated.
Are the teams random?Neal in AZ
I believe we are going to let people pick their teams so you can call yourselves "The Undead Enforcers", "Colonial Marines", "Camp Crystal Lake Staff" or whatever.

Open pistol is probably the least advantage in 3 gun of all the open guns. The functional difference between a tac scope rifle and open rifle is also minimal much of the time. I think you can be successful with an open shotgun, an open or tac-scope rifle, and a tactical pistol. In any case, using the Saiga-12 is a lot more fun to me.
-
We offer a 2 point and a 3 point sling for the CAV-15
-
...and I thought I was going to upset people more with 100 yard dash in 105 degrees
-
That is pretty wicked for an entire stage to be like that.
If I understand correctly, the head or the 'ittle bitty hole in the body can be engaged? If that's the case, would anyone even bother shooting at the small hole in the body?
Both the head and the hole had to be hit with one round each. No-shoot penalty was 10 seconds per hit.

stage 3
more pics HERE.
Who would put little holes in no shoots like that and then expect you to shoot through them!?!?! That is EVIL...like FUITS OF THE DEVIL!!!
Adios,
TG
I admit, I got the idea from the Ironman a few years ago. That stage at the Independence Day Action Rifle match shook up the results quite a bit.
-
I hope they don't bring out the roller coaster again.
+1... I went out and bought a Beta mag SOLELY on the basis of that stage. Now its pretty much a doorstop unless I want to make the move to Open
You have a Saiga-12....now you just have another excuse to go to open.

Thanks for everyone who came out and braved the heat to shoot this. I was very pleased that this match ran so smoothly thanks to the help of my ROs/Squad leaders and to all the shooters that helped keep the match moving effectively. I appreciate everyone that helped me on stage 1 so I didn't have to do the hundred yard dash 55 times. Also thanks to everyone for helping us tear down the stages and clean up so effectively.

Special Thanks to MGM Targets for donating all the paper targets we used at the match and sending us the parts we needed to refurbish our steel targets we use at the match every year.
This match probably had the most physically demanding and technically challenging stages yet. Congrats to all the division winners, I will be mailing out certificates.

There were generally two types of stages at this match;
Relay Races where one team member had to complete the course and come back and tag his next team mate to go do it.
Mega Stages with obstacles/physical challenges that required the team members to coordinate to move past them and engage target arrays.
Long guns were always cleared before moving or doing any obstacles, pistols had to be holstered when moving.
Some examples:
Attic Escape: Shooters begin on the ground underneath an 8 foot tall platform with a hole in the center. All team members must get through it. Once on top they must climb down the ladder. They then run about 50 yards down hill to a bay with rifle and pistol targets (usually breaking up into 2 two man elements). They then move to the next bay about 50 yards away and climb an 8 foot tall wall to then engage rifle and pistol targets. They then run another 50 yards and have to get through a window that is about 4 feet off the ground to finish engaging 4 plate racks.
Get to the Choppa!: One shooter starts by engaging 200 yard popper from roof prop. The teams then move out generally splitting into pistol and rifle elements. The rifle shooters have 10 targets to engage at 100 yards, the pistol shooters 10 as well from a position farther down the range. The team then moves the 200 pound dummy into the chopper and rifle shooters engage 200 yard poppers from inside the chopper as it rocks on the springs
Surprise Stage: Precision rifle shooter begins by shooting 500 yard sentry target. team splits into rifle and entry elements. Entry team breaches door with shotgun and engages pistol targets. They then search dummy for intel for who is not supposed to be shot (shirt color). Entry team comes out tells rifle team who they are not supposed to shoot, rifle team heads up stairs and engages targets. Entry team moves large food container back to start point. time ends with all team members back at start point.
To give you guys an idea of how tough this was, myself and one other shooter on our team attend the Ironman 3 gun every year. We both agreed that we were more fatigued and beat up after one day of this match than 3 days of Ironman. Both of us also do the Pecos Run-N-Gun Biathlon that is 6 miles of cross country race in the desert with 4 shooting stations in 100 degree temps. This match was harder; Pecos is over in 2 hours or so if you just shamble through the desert like I do, this thing we had to keep performing in the heat/humidity for much longer and more than one day. The shooting in and of itself was not more challenging than other matches; however when combined with the constant physical exertion and heat fatigue it became tough for a lot of people.
The main thing I would do different to prepare for next year is more physical training leading up to it, and now that we know what type of obstacles will be used practice getting over/through similar ones.
While this match was very hard, it was also one of the most fun I have shot. And there certainly isn't anything else like it in the country open to the public.
-
This was a truly unique shooting experience. No other match in the country is anything like this. The physical challenges and dynamic environment made this a great match, and great training opportunity. This was great fun even though we are all covered in bruises, sun burned, and sore. This match raised the bar for the types of challenges I want to see in action shooting events.

We have a round count yet? I hope I can find some reasonably priced .30'06...
Round Count Minimum: 107 (single hits on paper), 134 (double hits on paper)
-
coming up on 30 registered shooters. For a smallish match we are going to have some nice prizes for everyone that participates...

Shoot me head to head and I will spank you with my "Clear" magazines. Yeah, that is a challenge!!
Regards,
Jack Travers
JT Engineering
How'd your clear magazines do at Ironman? At least one shooter I spoke with had problems with his at the match.
As for your heads up challenge, I got 16th overall, you were 29th. Unless its because your mags malfunctioned, I'll readily admit it doesn't prove anything. If equipment functions all it proves is someone shot better at that time and place than someone else.
-
I am adamantly opposed to any new classes. As far as I am concerned let them into Tactical. If they get developed up to the point where I need to get one, then I will get one.
You still beat me by a few seconds at the local matches when I am using my Saiga with 20 round drum. So you're probably safe for now

Here's me on stage 7:

I think a Tactical-Mag Fed Shotgun class with 9 round magazine limit and iron sights only allowed would see increasing popularity. Most people getting these don't like shooting in open division. Tactical Scope has the most shooters at any competition. Usually 2-4 times the amount of other divisions. What's wrong with breaking this up a little bit?

The FLC isn't the most comfortable thing to load down and wear. There are a lot better options out there if you want a vest set up.
If you are going to use it for 3 gun the most practical thing would be to put some shot shell carriers on it for longer shotgun stages and throw it on when you need it. Run your rifle and pistol mags on your belt.
