  1. You can't go wrong with carbon arms or taccom. Both good companies run by good people .
  2. Ahhh the famous load ten. Quad load in both hands while holding the gun with your neck then a dual load with your WANG! BOOM ! Load 10
  3. Don't go Rock Island for 9mm . I did that and regretted it . Also don't go Rock island if you ever plan on upgrading the parts. The frames are not made to mil spec and i had a smith do a whole bunch of measurements for me when i wanted him to work on it. Every single part has to be hand fit , no drop in anything because of the variances in their tolerances . They're fun for a little beater 45 but i wouldn't trust them further then that
  4. I have the carbon arms and the Tac Com, both are great options for load 2 . AP custom makes some real fancy ones, but i've found i can knock shells loose from those too easily . I'm the same way with 4up , i can't reliably load those on the move, and tanking a quad load is a major f'up . I almost never tank a dual load
  5. Lee carbide sizing die , does the job very well .
  6. Trojan trumps them all by far . Just get reliable mags like Tripp or Wilson Elite , that is going to make or break a 9mm 1911 . Also the 9 round metal form seem to be pretty reliable too
  7. Pin the safety and take the bump off like the above pic. I just had that done on my newest gun and the grip feels really good .
  8. I use the Dillon one , but mostly i just plunk in the barrel. No better test
  9. Thanks Scott , i'd probably err on the side of caution and not coat the hammer either . I'm going to do a little break in this week and then i'll be sending you the gun soon.
  10. Ok one last question is ion bond PVD a DLC coating ? If so what is the micron thickness of IONBOND. i"m looking to get the external of the barrel and the non contacting portion of the hammer coated as well. Basically the whole gun is going to be blacked out excluding non visible internal parts and the fire controls . But everything else all black. Which version of ion bond seems to be the favorite for people ? I'd like a finish that isn't too shiny to reduce any kind of glare from the top of the slide . So i was thinking satin as opposed to matte .
  11. Hi Guys I"m getting set to have my new 9mm 2011 ion bonded / pvd / dlc coated . Just curious who you all think is the go to shop for this. Good customer service , decent lead times etc. I know of a couple right now , Springer Precision , Club Custom Gunsmiths and Techplate . But i'm open to anyone who you guys think does a good job and is reliable. thanks for the input Aaron
  12. I have the multi cal egw chamber checker and have the same issue . If you load long it'll bump the bullet and not look like it drops. I've switched to just plunk testing all my rounds instead . Plus it makes that nifty noise too =)
  13. Right now the cost will be closer to HK prices , but they know that's going to drop. So first volley may be 100 more then a glock but they expect that to change when the market gets pissed off.
  14. Do you live in an area where bears would be a problem ? Or would you use this gun more for handgun hunting ? Bear protection a .44 mag would be a better choice . If you're not as concerned with larger animals like that a .357 is just fine . A 4" .357 would be the best of both worlds . Velocity and concealment . If i went 4" for a .44 mag i'd get it ported or have a comp installed , unless you find a ported factory gun.
  15. I got to mess around with a few at SHOT this year and have a long chat with a couple of the guys who did the R&D and the designer . The newest of the prototype guns would have been the closest to the production model. The trigger is crisp and short and the designer said that the reset on the production model will be shorter . Also the front serrations will be moved back slightly . The design is really impressive and works on many great physics properties that should make the gun easier and flatter shooting . Now it all will come out in the wash when people start shooting them, but i have high hopes for the gun. From all inspections the poly and alum frame model both look great . They said we should be getting them by summer time.
  16. What's the finish on that guy? Black Nitride ? Ionbond ? Unobtanium?
  17. As reliability goes in 9mm 1911 variants. The mag is more then half the battle. I had a nearly stock STI Trojan in 1911 and it ran flawlessly with Tripp Cobra Mags. Generally the FTFs you get are from nosedives which are all related to the follower and spring. That 9mm was my go to bedside gun for years. I wouldn't hesitate to get an sti carry 9mm any day of the week. Do the due diligence and test it out with your desired loads . The guns themselves really don't make it run more or less reliably ( within reason of course ) Most of the small metal form mags with the hybrid followers are good to go. Any of the new wilson elite or tripp mags are good to go too.
  18. Agreed , a better question would be how many 2011 competition shooters carry the same gun for their CCW ? I've been leaning hard to that direction myself, going away from my g19. But who knows, i may just be getting all snobby about shooting a carry gun and not being as pin point accurate with a glock then i would be with a 1911 variant.
  19. If you carry a single stack with full or wide grips , a 2011 isn't actually any wider diameter wise. That being said a single stack carries much easier. I carry a g19 right now but i would absolutely love to start carrying an STI 3.0 tactical lite or the 3.0 tactical SS in the near future.
  20. I say the biggest help with a gun like that would be a comp on the end. Really improves shootablility . Other then that shoot it like ya stole it! I just spent the better part of a year tinkering with longer barrels , adjustable gas blocks, low mass bolt carriers , low mass rifle buffers and the like and you know what , my old school bcm 16" middy runs just as fast with a good comp and a full mass bcg. I'm actually selling my 3 gun upper soon to put money towards a fully built dedicated light weight low mass tuned rifle …..eventually . Unless you're going to be doing some of the more demanding competitions that really have you stretching out to 400 yards or so, that rifle will do everything you need it to. After the comp like Therealkoop said, a trigger would be my next buy. Throw a decent comp and a good trigger on a rifle and you can run it way fast . Affordable options include the miculek comp ( around 50 bucks ) and CMC trigger ( around 170 ) and you'll be smoking em. But the age old adage of more trigger time and matches is more valuable then any piece of gear .
  21. That's what i had read as well. The most reliable gas length on a 16 " barrel for what we like to do is a mid length , especially if you're going a2 tube and buffer . If you can talk to Tim from Taccom about it , he's a huge wealth of knowledge about this specific question. I was just asking him about it the other day.
  22. Very cool show . Must have melted some ears on that one
  23. Def a good bet. I would go mid length gas system though. I"m starting to go to the 16 " barrel camp with a 1:7 or 1:8 twist . That will easily stabilize the heavier bullets an give you enough to get out as far as we need to in 3 gun.
  24. I know a lot of you guys know a lot , but i'm inclined to side with Mr. Cheely on this one. Since bluing costs nothing to remove usually it seems like it would be a good idea . Since i'm in super humid florida stuff can rust really easily . Out of curiosity Matt, what top slide cuts do you like for the most grippiness ? I want to keep the barrel completely closed in so not really your normal cuts with the " speed holes " . Mostly for over the top slide cocking . Thanks for your insight
