  1. You can download the 2014 Alliant reloading manual. There is data for both powders. It is for JHP's and Alliant only lists max charge. This should get you in the ballpark. At least a starting point.
  2. You guys are making some pretty good points. I think that I'll aim a little closer to the 172 mark.
  3. I have seen more of the Alliant stuff lately. My local shop had some 231 but it was $29 a pound and $118 for 4lb's.
  4. Thanks guys. Until now I have only shot local matches. This July we're going up to Ryan Rocks which will have a chrono stage. I went through 8lbs of Unique in what I "thought" (just a guess really, no chrono) was a major PF load. Not so much. Now that I have a chrono I thought I should probably use it. On the flip side, I don't want to spend all of my time shooting through it. These loads have to work in 2 different guns as well. A Glock 22 and a Glock 35. I only ran these Promo loads through the 22. My earlier tests say that 35 will be 40-60 fps faster. I will verify the 35 when I'm happy with the 22. I will also pull the chrono out when it's warmer/cooler out. For now I think I'll try another 20 rounds of the 169 pf load to see if there is enough consistency to be comfortable.
  5. How close to the minimum PF are you guys comfortable with? Working with Promo for 40 major, I loaded up some 4.4gr, 4.6gr. and 4.8gr. with an OAL of 1.135. PF was 169, 172 and 180 respectively. Would you be ok with a 169 PF?. The lowest velocity was 928, so all of the rounds individually made the minimum. How much chrono work would you need to be confident at the chrono stage. I got my data from 1 session at 70 degrees. Should I be testing at different temps?
  6. Your WSF numbers for the 40 major loads look like the ones I got with a midrange charge of Unique. I tried American Select and Titegroup and they were both noticeably more consistent over the chrono. The Titegroup load only had a 10fps variation and the Amer Select was 15 fps where the Unique loads ran around 30 fps.
  7. Better safe than sorry. I wouldn't feel safe shooting them. I would pull them and recharge to the correct weight. I'm sure that I can pull 300 rounds faster than I can get to the ER to get stitched up.
  8. Did they have WST? I'm traveling through there next week. Sorry for the slow response. No WST that I saw. This was the Middleburg Heights store. The Ashland store might have a bigger selection.
  9. I would be interested in the results of both accuracy and power factor of the different weight bullets. I would separate and load up some and see what the chronograph and targets say.
  10. I got an 8lb jug of Promo today. Fin Feather and Fur had several powders suitable for pistols. Lots of Unique, Green Dot, Clay Dot. They had 1 pounders of almost all of the Alliant stuff. Lots of 700X as well.
  11. I'm going to assume you don't live in a place where you can usually count the number of days on one hand in a year where it is below 50 during the day .... if you did you'd understand how terribly cold 50 deg really is .... This winter was a little tougher than normal in northeast Ohio, but we had a couple weeks where the daytime high was barely over 0. The local matches run from March through October. I try to make it to all of them, regardless of weather.
  12. I am surprised by the amount of people who feel that 50° is cold. Unless it's real windy, I probably wouldn't even have a sweatshirt on at 50. Our first match this year started out around 25° and "warmed" up to around 38°. The 2nd match started around 38° and warmed all the way up to 55°. Both were dry though. While I'm not a fan of shooting in the rain, it doesn't stop me. As long as I can feel my fingers, I can live with cold and wet. Without shooting in inclement weather I don't think that I would be able to fully appreciate a 75° and sunny day at the range.
  13. 4.3 grains of TG gets me 172PF in the stock barrel with 180 Bayous. I got the ones with no lube groove. I'm not sure how much that changes things.
  14. I can't help out to much with the 165, but the I run 5.3 grs of Unique and a 180 plated bullet. I have loaded 165's with Power Pistol and Blue dot. The Power Pistol was noisy and flashy.
  15. The actual slide broke? How long does that take? My 35 is new and the 22 is a little older but hasn't been shot too much. I'm pretty sure at that point I will just get a new gun.
  16. My LGS had 1 and 4lb jugs. 1lber's were $29 and the 4lber's were $119. At first I thought it was $120 for 8lb's but it was only 4. I passed on it in hopes of finding a better deal. It was kind of scary though. Their prices were always one of he best around. Maybe that's the "new" price?? Ouch
  17. About 2 years ago we lost our Emma. After about a week, I dropped a potato chip on the floor. My heart sank realizing no one was there to get it. It does take a while for things to even back out when you lose a friend. My condolences
  18. How many cartridges do you make in an average loading session? 200-500 How many cartridges do you make in an average week? 200-500 some weeks and nothing other weeks The most I have loaded at one time was 1000. My son was helping so it went pretty quick. Which press do you use? Lee Loadmaster How many cartridges can you load in an hour? 400 with a small break every hundred or so to fill up the primer tray, brass and powder How long is your average loading session? 1/2 hour to 1 hour Knowing what you know now if your reloading equipment was lost or stolen what would you buy today? I'm torn here. I WANT to upgrade to a nicer press but I don't NEED to. That said I would probably get one of the Square Deals from Dillon.
  19. Good point on the different lots. I am nearing the end of an 8lb. jug of Unique and have been trying to get powder as it's been available. Occasionally I find 1lb. cans of Titegroup. So far I have picked up 4 of them. I will double check the lot#'s. For my first try I was only recording 5 rounds for each load. More than anything I just wanted to get a starting point. I was close, but still a little slow. I have pretty much burned about 5lbs. of Unique running 5.3 grains under coated/plated 180gr. bullets. With the plated bullets I averaged 882 fps from a Glock 22 and a little better in a Glock 35 with 910fps average. I assume I would be closer with a coated bullet. Once I get dialed in I'll run a bigger batch to verify the power factor.
  20. I have been reloading for about 5 years now. I have always aimed for middle of the road charges and velocities just to be safe. Other than the 45 ACP, I have stayed away from the quicker powders. Recently I have been shooting mostly .40 though. As I get a little more serious about shooting, I wanted to get more serious/particular about reloading. I've known for a while that I NEEDED a chrono to make match quality ammo. I did a lot of reading on this forum and a lot of reviews online and ended up with a Shooting Chrony Alpha master. My first session turned out really well. This last Saturday was a beautiful day. 65°, blue skies and calm, a rarity in northeast Ohio in April. I was able to test out 4 different loads in 3 different guns. I did get a couple of missed shots and a couple of ERR 1's. I didn't consider it unacceptable. After reading about light conditions and consistency I have a few questions. How many sessions in different conditions would you consider acceptable to average out? How many rounds/data would you consider "enough" to be comfortable at the chrono stage? Thanks for any advice.
  21. Welcome from northeast Ohio.
  22. I didn't even think about my carry gun. It's a gen 4 27. Good call. The only trigger work is 3.5lb connectors in both. Sounds like a couple of spring kits, extractor and a striker assembly and I should be good to go.
  23. Thanks guys. I usually just shoot local matches and don't take any extra parts. We are headed up to Ryan Rocks charity this year. After a 3.5 hour drive and a hotel room I would like to have some cheap insurance so that I can shoot. As far as the recoil spring goes, I was already thinking about converting the dual spring to the simpler more adjustable set up. I have seen these little rings that convert the double spring to the older style. Are these durable enough or is there a better way? I'm pretty sure that my sons gun needs a recoil spring any ways so I'll probably get a new one and hold on to the old one for a spare for now.
  24. This season both my son and myself will be shooting Glocks. What should I have in my range bag for emergency repairs? His is a Gen 3 RTF 22 and mine is a Gen 4 35. What parts will need to be gen. specific? Right now all I have is the little Glock tool Thanks for the advice
