My 1st loads on a Dillon @ the range.(BAD NEWS)
Allen replied to DULLYJAY's topic in General Reloading
Man, you got lucky. I was loading 9 x 21 yesterday with my 550b and noticed the flared empty didn't have any powder in it. Man, that got me thinking ...did this happen another time and I missed it? The kids were watching me a few minutes earlier and I could have gotten distracted from checking every case. I have the 150 rounds I loaded yesterday seperated from my range ammo, and with your thread will NOW only use this ammo in the back yard practicing so I can be intent on listening/ feeling for a light load. Sorry to hear your loss of an upper, and I don't know how to be more cautious in the future with the 223. I haven't reloaded 223 in 10 years, but if memory serves I loaded with near full capacity powder and could see how full each was. Allen -
Thanks for the replies and loads. I just called Dillon and the rep said they no longer sell/ use the black coated charge bar. The fellow said he uses AA7 and has problems also, too bad! I tried again to get a second opinion-ie different rep, and all I said was that my charge bar is galling, and he happily is sending me a replacement bar and some plastic squares for the bellcrank to bar interface. I guess giving too much information for the first guy was a bad tactic. My bar is galled.... But I have been stoning it for some time. Maybe that is part of my problem. BTW, I have always been 110% satisfied with Dillon, as I am sure all of you are also. Allen

Which Has Less Mussle Rise, Light Or Heavy Bullets
Allen replied to Allen's topic in General Reloading
Thanks again. I just ordered another set of dies and a toolhead for my 550B for your reason... I sort of wished I didn't buy the SLM 9x21 now that the PF is 165, but I have brass for both. I started putting colored lines on my 9x21 brass to make it easier to sort when at home. I have seen the 1.250 OAL on some loads ( for 1911 type guns) and thanks for that tip to be carefull using others data when loading at 1.150 OAL. I need a single action trigger for the boy's EAA. Any suggestions? I had my aluminum one installed, so I don't know what brand it is. But I like the shape. I dislike the EAA SA trigger. Thank you, Allen -

Which Has Less Mussle Rise, Light Or Heavy Bullets

Thanks Jody. Are you shooting a compensated P9, and what PF are you getting? My son's is a 9x19 and I am running a 9x21. Thanks, Allen -
I just switched over from Bullseye to AA7 for my 9mm, and on my older 550b the powder measurer sometimes gets sticky, and also sometimes slings a slight amount of powder out the front after the upstroke. I believe the powder dusting on my left arm coincides with a sticking return of the powder bar. Is AA7 not a good powder to run in a dillon? I saw on a powder website that an AA7 equivalent military surplus powder had a note not to use it in a progressive loader, and wonder if any of you dillon users have found my problem to be common? Thanks, Allen

Great links. One question on Jeff's surplus powder. I suspect the 30m1 ball ammo used to pull the powder from is old WW2 ammo? I didn't think the US still would mfg carbine ammo. The reason I ask is, this would make this old powder, ie not as stable as newer stlye powder. My dad used to get H4895 from Hodgedon I believe when they used to sell surplus powder, and it lasted a long time. I am not so keen on this old podwer for my pistol though. Anyone have any information on the age of this powder? The AA7 equivalent looks tempting for my 9mm. Allen

Our club likes Montana gold. For 124 gn 9mm, a 3750 case with free shipping works out to $40/ M. Zero was 47.50 / m shipped. I do like the idea of 135 gn Zero's though, as most don't bridge the 124 to 147 gap. I have used Rainier fmj 124's and they are good bullets in my gun. They are available at Midway around 43/ m? + shipping, or $46/ M shipped from Berry Mfg. I was just thinking of posting this same question... good timing Allen

Which Has Less Mussle Rise, Light Or Heavy Bullets
Allen replied to Allen's topic in General Reloading
Thanks for the information. Some of the guys in my club are saying using heavier bullets (147) allows poof loads, ie less recoil/ muzzle rise. I always thought the fast guys run light bullets fast rather than heavy/ lower velocity, but I haven't shot in 10 years so I am behind the times for technology. Thanks, Allen -
Are you using 771/ 773's? I ordered some and BE suggested possibly shortening them to reduce the tension also. I would imagine the weight of the mag ( longer mags) changes the retention while moving part of the mix too. Allen

I agree with the try-before-you buy idea if it is available. I shoot an EAA and it fits me better with a small hand. The 1911 has more parts to change, but it is individual feel that is important. SOmetimes having the ability to change makes life miserable, and takes more practice. An example: My father in law shoots a perazzi comp shotgun, and was averaging 98-99 birds at 21 yards. A freind had a gun with a stock that felt better, and he dropped to 85-88 right away. Went back to the old stock, and upped to 98 again. Hope this helps, Allen

Slide Glide
Allen replied to CQB Dave's topic in Miscellaneous Topics That Do Not Fit in Any Other Forum
Brian may include instructions in the jar I ordered Monday, but if not, how much do you put on the slide rails? Do you cover the entire contact area, or just the ends and let it work it's way in? Thanks, Allen -
How Do You Become An Ffl?
Allen replied to PistolPete's topic in Miscellaneous Topics That Do Not Fit in Any Other Forum
Good deal. The other advantage is discounts at places like Brownell's, and access to stores that only sell to an FFL holder at discounted prices for non gun supplies and parts. Good luck, Allen -

Sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for setting this up. Thanks, Allen -
Sorry to hear your troubles. Great information for future use. Thanks, Allen

The news media surely abuses us gun owners like we are drug dealers. We need to send letters to the media when they slant articles like this. Allen

I grew up with the Captain, but never liked Mr Rogers. I never would have guessed with their quiet nature that they served our great nation. Good information. Allen

I understand your frustration. Every news article involving guns either says assault weapons, machine guns or inherently makes a gun owner look like a nutcase. Allen

So did you all mess up bigtime for not getting reservations in time? Albertson's had live lobster for 9.99 a pound, and ever since our trip to NH/ Maine we are hooked on whole lobster. We shared a 3 1/2 pounder, with NY steak , salad and asparagus. Excellent results Allen

My son has shown an interest in shooting, and I just ordered another holster setup so he can have his own gear. I have seen young kids shoot at our matches before, and it is great to see someone so young like the hobby. Good luck to you and your son on being able to convince the RO into letting him shoot. Is there a setscrew at the bottom? If it is locktite, use heat, but if you use a torch I would wrap the comp in aluminum foil to keep the flames from damaging any finish on it if it is blued. Allen

Also, the open based jacketed bullets are almost as bad as lead bullets for airborn particulate. I believe many indoor ranges require FMJ or TCJ bullets for health reasons. Allen

#1, I didn't know you could by factory 9 x 21? I agree, buy a reloader and make that a major gun. I too shoot a 9 x 21 on a P9 frame, and it works great for my small hands. Allen

I too have been out of the game since before the ban. I didn't realize that it was illegal to buy hi-cap's now. I remember when you could buy pre-ban Mfg'd mag's. When did they outlaw importation of them? Glad you found a gun. I too want one, and it looks like magazines may be the defining point. What a crock. Allen
