  1. I live in Arkansas and am planning on going p-dog shooting with a group of friends in SD this summer, so it won't be a frequent event or I would buy a 220 Swift or 22-250 bolt gun (I had a mildly stroked VSSF Sendero that I could shoot 4" groups with at 600 yards that I should've kept). I love shooting AR's and the anti's hate them, not to mention the "hug anything that's cute and doesn't hurt my living" crowd. What better reason is there to get another one? Oh yeah, a lust for new guns.
  2. D'oh, I forgot about that. I just have to find my Front Sight for the password. Thanks.
  3. I really would like to have the thumbhole stock, but alas I shoot a rifle left-handed. Some of the thumbhole stocks I have tried on for size have been fairly comfortable for me, but I'm afraid after a long day of shooting the edge they have in the hole might make a helluva raw/sore spot.
  4. I know this doesn't really fit in the 3-gun forum, but I don't know where else to put it and since there are more people here than anywhere else I know of that have seen and shot JP AR's and I thought I'd trouble you guys for your opinions. I'm looking to get a varmint AR (I've been pining away for a CTR-02 for a couple of years) and I'm wondering who you guys would buy from for a really accurate p-dog bustin'/bench AR? Is there anyone else out there that I needed to take a look at before I plunk down $2350 for a rifle? I called JP last week and they gave me a build time of about 4 weeks depending on options. I've got an RRA Varminter ordered for a second gun, a guy can't have too many AR's. I've posted a similar thread over at AR15.com, but have received little response. Thanks.
  5. Grams did some mag work for me about 2 years ago and I'm sure they'll see my next set of mags. I won't be carrying anymore than 4 mags on my belt during a stage. I use 4 mag holders and hand carry my starting mag to the line. I've never shot a stage that took 60 rounds and if I get 2 mag malf's during a stage I'm pretty well done anyway. I may go with a couple of 170's, 3-140's and 2-126's to keep my options open.
  6. What length mags you are guys using? I'm going to get a shorty 9 built, but I'm stumped as to what length tubes to get besides one 170mm. I'm going to use Dawson basepads, Grams springs and followers and SV tubes. Here is my thinking: 170mm to start with 140mm for second 126mm's for the last two Or should I skip the 140 and outfit with 126's to eliminate the chance for over insertion?
  7. Mine has a tri-glide trigger and is less than 2lbs from the factory (tested using brass weights).
  8. Thanks for the input. I'm kind of up in the air since I load for a .40 and a 38 Super. I've got a lot of 40 brass and bullets and a lot of 38 Super brass and bullets, but I don't have any 38/9 SV mags, but I have .40 SV mags. I'm leaning towards getting a shorty built, but I may stick with a regular length gun, just depends on if I can find a shorty to shoot. I'm not to keen on Major 9, blowing up a gun gives me the jitters.
  9. Is anyone making one or has anyone used one? Trying to decide between 38 Super, 38 Super Comp and a .40. I know the .40 kind of fell out after a while for open guns, but has anyone tried it with a shorty? Does a .40 make enough pressure at the lower PF to even effectively run the comp on a full-size .40 much less a shorty?
  10. I've been looking at Bedell's work on Chuck's site and I've heard good things about him, from his work to his turnaround time, his prices are attractive. He might be the fit I've been looking for in a gunsmith if he'll make the couple of changes that I want. He's pretty high up on my short list.
  11. Therein lies the problem, they don't offer an Aftec and I don't want an interchangeable breech face on my open gun. I built my current SV on the gunbuilder, I wish more companies had one. I don't want to drop 3 or 4 grand on a gun and not have it built my way. Why pay that much just to have something that isn't exactly what I want?
  12. Thanks Monster, but that link isn't working. I tried searching for other links for Hawley's website to find a backdoor in but something must be down.
  13. Anyone know of a gunsmith that will build an open gun my way? I have a few things that I am used to and that work for me, but I haven't seen a gunsmith using them on their guns. Here's the list: SV Scotts Grip Aftec Extractor SV Trigger Group SV Triple Xcelerated Hammer AET Barrel The grip feels good and I've been using one for 2 years. We all know the Aftec works I like the inerchangeable trigger to experiment with length and contour Just looks and they are durable despite what they look like, I've also been using one of these for 2 years. I've got one in my .40 SV, it feeds, no torque and its accurate. I don't want to argue over the merits of my choices, they've given me great service, I'm used to them and I want them. So who can I get to do it? Price is not much of a concern (young, single and no kids). I have mags, springs, holster, belt, mag pouches, etc. already, I just want a good gun. My shooting has really fallen off, I'm tired of IDPA, have more fun at USPSA and I want to dedicate myself to the dot. I've owned an open gun before, so I know what I'm getting myself into, but I'm ready to go for it. My work conflicts with shooting for part of the year, but I have 6 months a year off to shoot and I figure I might as well try to make something of it. I'm quitting smoking, I've adjusted my diet to lose some weight, starting to work out and want to get full bore into shooting like I was a few years ago. It's time for me to crap or get of the pot. Thanks for any input. Sorry for the diatribe and I'm not sure if this post needs to be here or 'Gunsmithing'. I apologize if it needs to be moved. Gabe Kirshberger
  14. If you shoot IDPA the grip safety must be operable, if he carries this weapon it is a good idea to have it in working order. There is more to shooting than IPSC.
  15. I regularly shoot, am on a first name basis and know a lot of the same people as one of the long standind Team SVI members and can't get that kind of stroke. This is a very busy time of year for SVI, don't expect too much.
  16. Unless your buddy is pulling some strings for you it will be a while, mine took 4 months.
  17. A hybrid comp barrel only actually has about 2.5" of actual barrel, I've never directly measured a hybrid comp barrel. Where the ports start you don't get effective burn of the powder and lose the pressure behind the bullet because of the ports, resulting in less velocity over a standard non-ported or even comped barrel. Which means you have to increase the pressure/powder charge of your ammo that much more to make power factor, even at the new lower power factor you must be extremely careful when loading your ammo. A hybrid comp gun is extremely efficient in reducing recoil and muzzle flip but it can be a risky alternative to a standard comp or a regular barrel.
  18. Hydracomp? When did Wil come up with a water compensation system? Sorry, I couldn't resist. The hybrid barrels are too scary for me, I don't like pushing my ammo that hard. I've seen what happens to a hybrid when it goes boom and I don't want to be holding one.
  19. I've ordered some Lasercast to try. I'll report back with my findings, it will be a while as my work season is starting and I won't be home until December, more airports and hotel rooms than you can shake a stick at.
  20. S&W is only producing the 686 in 38 super as a Performance Center gun. I saw one on gunsamerica I believe for $839, I am going to have my dealer check on one for me tomorrow.
  21. My SV didn't come with any instructions for the barrel. I've ordered some laser cast bullets to use, midway will start carrying them at the end of the month, and I'll see how the accuracy is. Here is Wil Schuemann's response to my email. So long as you follow the conventional wisdom and shoot lead bullets that are a minimum of 0.002, and preferably 0.003 inch larger in diameter than barrel bore groove diameter you will be fine. All the barrels I've examined which have shot lead bullets with a black coating, which is usually indicative of moly disulfide, have shown signs of extreme abrasive wear. Finally, there is a brand of bullets, the name eludes me at the moment, the manufacturer is located in eastern Oregon or Montana, which produces a line of bullets that contain some silver, which increases their hardness. That might not be necessary, but would probably be desirable regardless of what the type of barrel. Now I remember their name; Lasercast. Wil Schuemann
  22. I had a Wilson sight break on a custom gun I had built. My gun ate one of the springs and locked the gun up tight. Rather than trying to literally tear into myself I sent it to the gunsmith, when I went to pick the gun up he handed me a sliver of chewed up metal that was lodged in the gun, he couldn't tell me from where because when he took the gun apart it fell out on his bench. After we studied on it for a few minutes it he went and pulled out some parts from another Wilson sight and the sliver of metal matched the small springs underneath the upper half of the sight.
  23. I purchased a ticket for it earlier. Ross and Diane live a couple hours away from me and I figured if I was going to buy into a raffle I would just as soon the money stayed in the state and help out some people I know.
  24. I just wondered if any of you guys were shooting lead through your Schuemann AET barrels? I have heard it is a no-no, but I wondered if their was any truth to it. I've lost all my bullet suppliers, but I can still get Precision Bullets at a good price and I know they are hard, but still lead. Thanks for any input you guys and gals can give me.
  25. Matt, Since I'm home for a while you can add another to the list that will be shooting both at CASA. I guess since I'm not around all year to provide comic relief the club falls apart. I'm going to try to hit Linker this month. See you in a couple of weeks. I found out that I won't be able to shoot the IDPA Nat's, I'm leaving for work on Sept. 10th and I won't be home until at least Nov. 22nd. I can't take it!!!! It looks like I may be nailing down a full time job in Florida, I should know by the end of the summer so maybe I can get back into shooting regularly and start molesting some new clubs.
