  1. Im transitioning to Open and plan on running an offset reflex sight (Doctor or Burris sight). My main optic is a Swaro Z6i zeroed at 200 yards. I was thinking of putting a 15 yard zero for the offset red dot. What has been effective for others?
  2. How come no one has any of these in stock for a Benelli? I need a few sets for an M1....anyone have any leads?
  3. Does the Safariland have separate compartments for the long guns or do you have to hope that they aren't banging up against each other in the same "padded" compartment?
  4. Thanks, thats very helpful. The wing nut at the end of your screw is a great idea to be able to adjust tension on the fly. I just need to figure out if I can keep my thumb rest.
  5. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could take a few minutes and post a pic of their modified Kydex holster.
  6. Why doesn't anyone have any of these in stock????
  7. From a glass clarity perspective, I think the Leupold Mark 8 is hands down the best glass for a CQB/Medium Range scope on the market. Period. I had one in my hands next to a 1.1-8 Premier, a prototype 1-8 S&B, and its by far the best. Granted, the Leupold I had in my hands did not have the daylight visible red dot (had the mil dot reticle), the only issue with the Leupold is that the daylight red dot is only available with the Horus reticle which IMO is awfully busy. The Leupold also has a list price near $4K. If they offered a mil dot reticle with the daylight visible red dot, I'd be sold.
  8. 1)I don't think its the extractor since it runs the longer ammunition without an issue. Also the extractor was replaced with an after. I know that an after can also cause issues if not installed correctly, but Im doubting that (its a possibility though). 2) Well I don think Federal 180 Gr is fatboy brass, and its OAL is definitely shorter than the 1.180 OAL load that runs perfectly. 3) Not dragging the thumb. It seems that many here also have 2011's that don't like the shorter rounds. Is there something about your feed ramp/extractor thats different than mine?
  9. I have a 2011 that funds perfectly with .40 S&W loaded .180 long by Atlantic Arms & Ammo. Runs without a hiccup,...basically a sewing machine. Well, I ran low on the long loaded Atlantic stuff today so I tossed some Federal 180 Gr FMJ factory rounds in the mag and the slide would occasionally fail to completely go into battery. Happened 2x in 50 Rounds. Ive heard some here say that STI's just like the long bullets and don't even bother to run factory length. Others say that they run fine with both types. Whats the deal here? Should I send the pistol to my smith and have him work the feed ramp a bit or should I just succumb to running the long stuff?
  10. This is the same argument guys in the long range game say to justify their 10x Leupolds against the big 5-25 S&B, Hensholdt, or Premier. Sure you can shoot at 1K and beyond with 10X but fact of the matter is, that the greater zoom makes LR hit easier. I could also engage a steel target at 600 yards using iron sights. Did it for years shooting NRA High Power. Would that be my optimal choice? nope.
  11. The Premier WAS available. their 1.1-8 was a limited production run where they made less than 50 units total. you can't buy one right now except on the off chance that a used one becomes available. They are supposed to be coming out with a new 1-8 before the end of the year.
  12. That's a damned good price especially considering many who normally stock this scope are out. I just received a unit I ordered from amazon this evening. It's already back in the box with another unit from lapolicegear on the way. Thanks for the tip!!
  13. FYI, the S&B has a SFP dot as well. I haven't heard Amy neg feedback about scope-eye dstance changing with zoom from those who have fingered prototypes.
  14. Went ahead and ordered the Swaro Z6i BRT. That thing was hard to find. I ended up paying nearly full price on Amazon.com. So I'll likely take a beating if I sell it in a few months when the S&B 1-8 comes out. At least I got overnight shipping for $3.99.
  15. Well I sent my slide in. Hopefully I'll have it back within the next two weeks. I'll post pics as results.
  16. Alamoshooter. I did consider the Vortex Razor HD. The reason that the razor HD and current S&B 1-4 Short Dot didnt make the list is the 4x mag. The 1x magnification is great, but I prefer a little more magnification if it is available.
  17. TMC, of course "other variables" and practice come into play, but I don't subscribe to the school of thought of buying only the minimal of what is required "to get the job done". Procuring the best equipment is my question here. I am seeking opinions on what equipment helps augment the accomplsihed shooter the most, not how I can "get by" with a "simple scope".
  18. If the purpose of coating bullets with the bore lapping compound is to create some semi abrasive rounds, I believe David Tubb sells Throat maintenance bullets that thy Claim removes some imperfections in barrels that are showing degraded accuracy due to wear. I'm not sure about the application of those rounds in a new barrel. Seems like a few patches, some compound and some bore shine are easier.
  19. I don't imagine that dialing will be required, just a "nice to have" in the rare case that there may be an advantage. Between the Swaro and the Elcan, would many here find the limitation of having only a 1.5 or 6x zoom a disadvantage? I was thinking that having a "flip lever" to toggle between two zoom settings in less than a second could be an advantage. But would thie lack of any zoom between 1.5 and 6 be a severe limitation?
  20. The thought of "breaking in" barrels through cleaning is often debated. Most people that are into long range shooting also have this debate. The thought is that some of the smaller burrs that are present in even "hand lapped" barrels will 'lay down" and get "trapped" after too many rounds pass through the barrel. Cleaning the barrel after a few rounds when the barrel is new is supposed to break these smaller steel "micro fibers" free. The thought is that leaving them there will lead to the potential of greater copper fouling down the road leading to decreased accuracy. In the tactical long range group, GA Precision also recommends this process with their rifles. They dont use a lapping compound as JP doesm but the principel seems to be the same. My thought is that Its a bit of a pain, but we all paid extra money for JP rifles or other precision rifles so that we can get the best accuracy out of a highly tuned system. Spending an extra hour on the first range day with a new rifle wont kill me.
  21. I need to choose from scopes that are CURRENTLY available. That means the upcoming S&B 1.1-8 is not a contender since it wont be available for a few months. Im considering the following: 1) Swarovski Z6i 2) Elcan Specter DR 1.5/6 3) US Optics SN4 1.5-6 4) Leupold Mark 8 1.1-8 So far, for pros/cons: 1) The Swaro is lightweight, and has a true 1x magnification. Cons are that it does not have exposed turrets, so I can never dial an elevation. It has good daytime visible illumination and a BDC reticle. I actually really wish it just had a mil-dot reticle as that is what I am used to on my long range rifles, but a BDC reticle will do. At ~$2K with a mount its not cheap, but in the middle of the pack of scopes under consideration. 2) The Elcan 1.5/6. This MIGHT be my first choice so far. The "flip swich" change between magnifications is handy for stages with targets that range from near to far. Good red dot and fabulous glass (probably similar in quality to the Swaro).Weight is a hefty 24 oz, but considering its mount is integral its about 2 oz more than the Swaro with the mount. Cons are that it doesnt have the true 1x mag for very close targets (although the 1.5 is what I use on my current scope the most) and that the magnification is not infinitely adjustable. Im just not sure how valuable having a magnification set at "4x" would be when I could just go to 6. Like the Swaro it also lacks exposed turrets, so "dialing" elevation is not an option and also has a BDC reticle. 3)The US Optics SN4 with 1.5-6 can be built to my specs. As I come from a long range shooting background, I can configure turrets to a familiar in a Mil based system and have my reticle also with mil based units. The first focal plane reticle is nice, but Im not sure how useful it will be at lower magnifications as you cant really see the reticle at 2x or 3x mag. Cost is at $1500 loaded, but it lacks immediate availability (has to be built) and does not have a flash dot. Its probably a bit on the heavy side weighing in at 24 oz without a mount. It will be likely around 32 oz with an ADM/LaRue mount. 4)The Mark 8 is BY FAR the priciest. At nearly $4K I can buy almost 2 of every other optic. But it is FFP, great glass, and has enough zoom for me to be VERY effective at long range targets. Like the USO, I am a bit concerned that it lacks a daytime visible red dot. That could slow me down in the closer range targets which is the majority of 3 gun. fabulous locking Exposed turrets, great mil based reticle, but a huge chunk of change. Am I missing any scopes to consider? Ive purposely ruled out scopes that only have 4x magnification as the 6x seems to be a distinct advantage. Any opinions?
  22. No there are 2 Tubes essentially on the UBR. The one underneath is a proprietary buffer tube (that's stuck). The other tube which the butt stock slides on, is attached via a screw similar to a rifle stock on an A2 with a screw at the end of the tube. The only thing remaining on the rifle is the "inner" tube.
  23. I bought a new JP SCR11 this month. Ordered it with a UBR stock, changed my mind and decided to change to a PRS. Well JP sent the new PRS which arrived today (Friday after they closed). Well I thought removal of the UBR would be pretty straightforward. Take the spring and bugger out. Did that. Take the UBR butt stock off. Did that. Then it came down to unscrewing the buffer tube from the lower. Damned impossible. Put a 5/8" wrench at the end of the tube, wont budge. Hit the threaded section with a heat gun to soften any loctite that might be there (dont know if they use locktite on this part- shouldnt need to), and tried the 5/8" wrench again. Wont budge. Then I tried a strap wrench, nothing either. Who has a JP? is this normal? I wish I could call and ask, but obviously they are closed for the weekend. Any ideas?
  24. I think that is the dilemma for me now. I already have the extended dust cover on the Edge and added additional weight via a Tungesten Guide Rod to the firearm to help reduce felt recoil. This weight is all at the muzzle end and is "fixed". I guess the dilemma is whether the lightened slide will help reduce felt reocil or if it will increase recoil. It doesnt seem that there is a definitive answer. Honestly, I dont care of the weapon really cycles faster, I am more concerned on reducing muzzle flip. Ive heard some here say that reducing reciprocating mass will help while others are saying that it will make the weapon "snappier".
