  1. The Mod 41 would not be legal for SC. The gun has been altered and made unsafe by disabeling the safety. Normally when shooting SC with a .22 the safety does not have to be used but has to be operable and do what it was designed for. In all shooting competitions all safeties must be operational. NO EXCEPTIONS!

I let the lower thumb inside ride the top of the safety and the top tip inside ride the top of the slide release. You get the highest grip and no way to push the safety up. You are always starting from the ready low position so the initial grip does not change.

    What's your source?

  2. Oh, if you already have it, you can still run it but I would just have it re-barreled to 9mm and then you don't have to worry about brass and finding load data - the two biggest issues with 9x21. Other than that, I used to love it but that was before 38 SC and TJ - which solved the rim issue. However, I went over to 9Major totally and really enjoying it. Can be a little finicky and you are stretching the loads but it's cool so far...good luck!

  3. Are you serious? Why? My first Open pistol was a 9x21 back in 1997 when it was becoming big news about that and 9x23. They both quickly died and the 38 Super kept it's pace but now 9mm Major seems to be taking some from 38S.

I didn't know they even sold them anymore, where did you see one at?

  4. I really doubt you can get much softer than a 9mm minor load. You can get heavier bullets and run them slower but I haven't seen where any of my .40s are softer than my 9mm with comparable loads.

As far as your loads, seems like TG at 3.2 is a good load, here is a chart:

  5. First major match for me and the kid. I finished solidly in the lower third. The friendlyness and amount of learning and help was amazing. Made a real impresssion, think my kid is hooked - he has hope. The best thing besides that is that I won the Springfiled XD-9!!!

Sweated the Chrono, we made 125 PF by 2.086, Yikes, don't trust the F1 Chrony, wait, I shot it to pieces last week. Five or six of us were close - we were the poofy load squad. Also had a squib. The very first stage (12) first shooter's gun fell out of his race holster after tossing the ball and pivoting. From Alabama Shooters, great guy, took it with grace and hung out the rest of match with his buddies.

Hey guys, this is the RO from Stage 11 - glad to have you out there! Your son did great, I was really impressed.

You won an XD-9 and I won a PINK belt, PINK mag holders, and PINK brass bag, wanna trade?? :)

That pink gear is top of the line CR Speed equipment, and I am sure you can find a buyer, so that you can get the same set in black or red.

Yeah but I would rather have the XD-9 :)

  7. NCBoiler, can I add another question here?

How does HS-6 compare to 3n38/3n37? Feel? Clean or dirty? smoke? etc? I have not tried either of them but I want to. Before I go buy pounds of it, just wondering about the HS-6 since it seems to be one of the most talked about for 9Major.

    Thanks and love the avatar!!

  8. I put 7.0 to 7.5 grs. of Auto Comp in new Starline cases, using Hornady HAP bullets OAL 1.165 out of a New MatchMaster. No cases split but they all are junk after one firing. I started using 9.3grs. of 3N38 & now most cases can be reloaded. These are the only 2 powders I have tried so far.

Have you tried Power Pistol? It's a decent powder so far for me. How did you like the 3n38? I am going to get some soon and try that, what are chrono results?

  9. We use orange cones that are about 1' high. I'll be looking around for some 2' tall cones to start putting out soon. Safety is off and finger outside the trigger guard.

The old way stated that that a aiming point be 12' from the shooting box but now it's 10' out and 2' high.

Does that mean the "provisional rules" are now in effect?

I would say so. What does Provisional mean? It is, "providing or serving for the time being only; existing only until permanently or properly replaced; accepted or adopted tentatively; conditional; probationary.

Since it is serving for the time being and adopted tentatively, that would lead a reasonable person to believe so. I will contact SCSA and see what they say...

  10. How does the DeltaPoint compare to the C-more STS? Has anyone had both to make the comparison? (from shopping results it looks like the STS would be cheaper) If so, which did you prefer and why? Don't have to write an essay about the pros and cons just a simple reply would be greatly welcomed. I'm looking at getting a Limcat mount from Johnny to use on my Razorcat 9mm major pistol to replace the Quinn 2 C-more that I'm currently using and would appreciate any input offered.

I have both right now. The STS is mounted on my wife's Ruger 22/45 and I have the DP mounted on my Ruger Rifle, both are used for Steel Challenge. I have shot both for a while and although it took a while to get use to the triangle over the dot, I love the DP now. In fact, we are talking about selling her STS and getting her a DP also. We both prefer the DP for 1) very crisp and clear glass, 2) wider FOV, 3) sharp triangle that adjust quick and perfect to light, 4) Triangle is good for speed and precision using the center to cover or tip, 5) lower profile, 6) the cost was very close to each other. If you search around, you will find these sights within $20 or $30 of each other so the cost difference is trivial. The one advantage the STS has is the the intensity is auto or manual - I like that feature. Since you didn't want an essay, I will stop here but I am a firm believer in the DP product.

  11. The stop plate can't be hit twice...well, it can be but only the first time around counts and penalties, if any, are recorded. The timer can only be backed up once, that's it. See the following rules from the 2011 Provisional Rule Book:

6.1 "...Each of the standard targets must be hit at least once before hitting

the stop plate, and the time stops when the stop plate is hit."

"6.3 Misses (Standard Plates): Any standard plate which has not been

hit before the stop plate will count as a Miss."

Section 7. "...Once the stop plate is hit time stops and all appropriate

    penalties apply."

"D.3.1 If the RO verifies the stop plate was hit prior to the last shot

displayed by the sound timer, the second to the last shot

time will be recorded as the competitor’s sound actuated

time The timer may NOT be “backed up” more than one

    shot."

Now, in a local match, I would not be as anal as to not back up a few times to get the correct time if it was purely because the shooter didn't hear it or so forth. If it was out of frustration, well, they are S.O.L.

  12. We use orange cones that are about 1' high. I'll be looking around for some 2' tall cones to start putting out soon. Safety is off and finger outside the trigger guard.

The old way stated that that a aiming point be 12' from the shooting box but now it's 10' out and 2' high.

  13. Has anyone broke one of these yet, mounted to the slide? I just ordered one and an Arredondo mount, but would really like it on the slide, and am leery of killing a $325 sight needlessly with 9 major slide velocity. What's the warranty on these?

Supposed to be a full lifetime warranty. I only have mine mounted to my M41 so I have no idea if it will withstand the force from slide mounting. I just saw Jessie shoot hers at Area 6 but it is frame mounted. Let us know how that goes...

  14. Just for the record...

The load I put together pulled a 171 PF at Area 6. It was between 170-173 at home so it was right on. It is a Zero 147 JHP, 7.0 gr PP, New Win Brass, CCI SP, with a OAL of 1.111. I tried to load them out longer but my 9 Open shorty would not feed them reliably until I shorten up to this length...odd, huh? The Zero bullets have a very long ogive so loading them short makes sense. This was shot out of a 4.15" KKM barrel, 2 popple holes, 3 chamber Ti comp. It shot pretty decent but now on to some 124s coming soon. The 147 is not the preferred load but it will work in a pinch.

Thanks for all the help and advice working up this load...

  15. Yeah, I have. I used Berrys 100 and 124 in my 9 Open Shorty for some steel loads. Compared them to some MG 95gr, all using N320 and the accuracy was much better with the MGs. I have some better data at home but off the top of my head, I remember the accuracy was almost twice as good with MGs at 25 yards. At 15 yards and less, not too much of a difference. It's okay for practice and local stuff, I think, and when you compare the price of the MG 95 to the Barry 100, you can really save a lot with the Berrys. For example, 4500 MG 95 JHP bullets go for $367 and 4500 Berrys go for $265 plus shipping (should be about $16). If you are shooting a lot, that's a good savings - if you can make it work for you. Hope that helps...

  16. Do any of the VV powders have some volume to them or are they pretty dense. Looking to get into 9mm loading and looking for something for a zero 124gr FMJ that isn't a tiny charge. In the 40, I use tightgroup which is a small charge but its easier to see deeper in the 40 than the 9mm. Will probibally be shot in a 1911 or a glock 34

Yes, I"ve been loading N320 and N350 lately and they are "fluffy" powders. Even at low charge weights, it's nearly impossible to double charge a 9mm case. I've been loading up some really light bullets (95gr) lately at 5.5gr N320 and the case is almost full. Even at 4.3 for my heavier bullets, it was still pretty full. N320 is a great powder!

  17. I was just looking in my Lyman's manual and it said for a 125gr jhp 4.5grs of Bullseye, with a 1.075 OAL Does that sound right? The OAL seems short!

That would be fine for a "normal" gun like a Glock or something.

In all reality when it comes to 9mm major, there is nothing in a reloading manual that is going to be applicable at all. Most 9mm open guns are 2011 platform guns, which will accept much longer OAL ammo and will run more reliably with longer ammo as well. And as far as powder charges, you'll never see anything in a manual that even approaches 9mm major.

Have you seen the VV manual? There is a 3n38 load that is major...

  18. Topic pretty much says it all.

I'm looking to try some different powders in 9mm Open Minor for USPSA minor and open Steel Challenge. I started with my standard HP38 load (great powder to start with, IMO) but then moved to PowerPistol. At the same velocity, I was surprised how much better the PowerPistol worked the comp compared to HP38. My 9mm major powder choice has lead me to Blue Dot -- which I love the way the gas works the compensator.

Is there another powder I should try? I don't mind being above 125pf as long as the dot moves less. :)

Could I try a much reduced Blue Dot load with a standard OAL (I'm using 1.160 for Major) ? 5.0 gr or so at 1.090?

    Thanks!

You should definitely mind being above 125pf for open :D , you go below 125PF at the chrono stage and you are shooting for fun. Your scores don't count.

I think he's referring to his Steel loads, not USPSA...

  19. Blue Dot was my choice for years with my 38SC but I never knew how dirty it was until I tried some other powders.

For 9 minor, look at VV N320. A little pricey but you won't find a better, cleaner, softer powder for some minor loads. I run MG 95 JHP and 4.7 N320 at about 1.078 with FSP and it's like shooting a .22 rimfire. That is a really light steel load and I had to change out the recoil spring down to 6lb to work reliably.

I just found a great Major load with Power Pistol and 147 Zero JHP. Hey...no laughing - I only had 147s and had to get a load together quick. I can't wait to get some 124s and try PP with that.

So, anyway, try some N320, I'm sure you will like it...

  20. What I did for my Steel Matches is I put Stage Score Sheets at each stage. Since there are five stages and I almost always have five squads, I print up 25 sheets per month. Then when all the shooters go to Stage 1 (for example), all shooters put in the shooting order. If they run two guns, I make it clear to always shoot the first signed up gun first and the second one as the second gun. Makes it simple, no numbers to remember, etc., etc. The other advantage to this is when a stage is done with say 12 shooters, it's only one sheet of paper (so saving paper there) and I get the advantage of starting the score keeping within 30-40 minutes of the match starting. Makes it more efficient, less time at home doing scores, saves paper, and shooters don't have to remember any numbers or abbreviations.

I started the matches at my club 19 months ago and they have ran flawlessly like this. I do have Stage Score sheets and Match Signup sheets if you are interested in doing it this way. Let me know....

  21. Is there a Sportsmans warehouse near you? I have bought 3N38 there before. I know there is one in Columbia, SC....

Also look into some 3N37...For that matter, N105 max load is 1108FPS with the 147, and it's a great powder.

Yeah, I tried the Warehouse and they didn't have 3n37 or 3n38. They did have N105 but I read several threads on here about problems with loading it. I'm not opposed to driving up in the morning and picking that up if you know of a great load with a 147. Thanks for the advice!
