  1. Can't comment on the Mag Blueprinting tubes as I've never used them. I use stock STI 140mm tubes or those tuned by Dawson.

I use the Dawson +1 basepads, but also have a couple of tubes that I can use with the Dawson SNL basepads and still be legal. But it wasn't until I got my hands on the EGW mag gauge that I could tell if the SNL basepad with a certain tube was under the 141.25mm max length.

I'm using the Grams followers and 11 coil springs.

With the above combo I can get 20 .40SW rnds in the mags. FWIW, the ones with the SNL basepad are easier to seat than the +1.

  2. Will your 2211 work with GSG mags? I have a Marvel Unit 1 .22 conversion that runs great with GSG mags, and I added some aluminum basepads from CWA since I'm running a Techwell SP magwell on my 1911 frame. http://www.cwaccessories.com/Products.html

Some minor fitting is needed to get the basepads to fit on the GSG's and it basically replaces the stock basepads. The GSG mags fall free from my 1911 as well.

  3. The first thing I tried was beveling the slide, but I think would have needed to take quite a bit off to avoid getting bit 100% of the time. The Ed Brown BTGS keeps me from getting bit 100% of the time, and on two of my other STIs that I replaced the GS I found that I didn't need to bevel the slide. For me this was the fix, but hard to say if our hands are the same or if we even hold the gun the same exact way.

  4. I had this exact same problem on my Eagle. I resolved mine by changing out the STI beavertail grip safety for an Ed Brown. Its subtle, but the relief cuts in the STI BTGS allow the gun to sit deeper in the web of your hand. But in my case it sat deep enough to allow the slide to cut into my thumb. I have a scar more or less in the same location as yours.

The Ed Brown BTGS doesn't have the relief cuts but still allows me to get a high grip on the gun. Its also a match for the frame cuts, though some minor fitting to cosmetically blend everything together may be needed. I also noticed that once I replaced the BTGS I also stopped getting hot spots from extended firing sessions from the corner of the thumb safety. All three of my STIs (1911 and 2011's) now have Ed Brown grip safeties on them.

  5. This might help if you're thinking about buying a stock Eagle then having it tri-topped later.

http://www.freedomgunworks.com/services.html Scroll down to the part about tri-topping.

If you have it built from parts, you can order the slide tri-topped with the dovetails cut to the right dimensions from STI or some place like Dawsons or Shooters Connection. (My uneducated guess is they cut the dovetails after they tri-top it).

+1 to all the comments about the STI Eagle. Love mine. Not sheep-ish.

  6. I think I've had the same problem. The way you describe the slide not fully going into battery and requiring some force to extract the bullet sounds like the same problem I had with a new Kart barrel in one of my 2011's with a moly-coated bullet of a similar profile. It turned out my barrel needed to have the forcing cone lengthened very slightly. I think my gunsmith said he barely did one full turn and then the bullets would drop in all the way. Its been feeding great ever since.

I think it is the shoulder of your bullet that is making contact. The chamber is probably fine. When you forcibly extract a round, is there a mark on the bullet's shoulder where it is hitting the forcing cone? I normally load to 1.180" OAL, and I could run the same bullet only when I loaded to 1.130". If I used a different bullet that had a shorter shoulder with a more round nose shape they loaded fine even at 1.180".

  7. I just had that done. I started with a 5" Eagle in .40SW, and purchased the 9mm slide, barrel, bushing, FP, FPS, extractor, and front/rear sights. Total cost in parts IIRC was just under $650. Add to that the cost for having a GS fit everything together and finish the slide. The .40SW ejector is OK with 9mm, ditto with the slide stop, FLGR and plug. So at the end of the project you could be into it anywhere from $800 to $1,000 depending on a few things such as what kind of finish you want on it. Cost of a new 2011 is $1,700-2,000-ish?

I still intend to use the .40SW top-end as my back-up Limited Div pistol, so my GS only fitted the 9mm slide to the frame and did not mod the frame in anyway that would cause it to be sloppy when I put the .40's slide back on it.

I forgot how much fun a 9mm in a full size 1911/2011 could be! Don't forget about getting 9mm mags.

  8. I liked how they paid homage to the past (car). Now I know what "Q" means. Still not sure what "M" means.

I read somewhere that Ian Fleming selected "M" as the title for the Chief of MI6 in his books because in real life the one of the original chiefs of MI6 was referrred to as "C" which was short for his last name of "Mansfield-Cummings", not not "Chief".

However, in the first Daniel Craig 007 movie there is a scene when he is in Judy Dench's appartment and made a reference to "M" being short for her first name -to which she cuts him off before he can say the name by threatening to have him shot...

I recently saw From Russia With Love on Netflicks, and early on in the movie there is a scene in M's office where they refer to Desmond Llewellyn as "Quartermaster". Come to think of it, in one of the Pierce Brosnan 007 movies he refers to the John Cleese version of "Q" as "Quartermaster".

OK, I guess I've seen a few 007 movies... One thing I like about the Craig 007 movies is that he actually bleeds. In the old Roger Moore movies, I think maybe he got his hair mussed up once.

  9. I had the same problem where the corner of the thumb safety was rubbing my thumb raw. Coincidently, my thumb was also getting slide bite. Turns out the relief cuts in the BTGS were the cause of both problems because it allowed the gun to sit really deep in my hand. So while it resulted in a high grip, it was causing me sore spots and blood from where the sllide was nailing me.

I changed out the BTGS for an Ed Brown, and both problems went away. Now all of my STI's have the Ed Brown grip safety.

  10. I'm shooting Limited not Open, but I do have a couple of Rick's COM Race Holsters.

    IMG_0336.jpg

I like them a lot. Very sturdy and secure. The offset is created by a block of delrin and you can set the holster up for different cants and height. Here's a side view: IMG_0095.jpg

I think lead time is about 6-8 weeks to get your order. Generally best to give Rick a call at COM. Great guy, and he's also a competitor.

As far as belts, the belt shown in the pics is one of COM's as well. I also own CR Speed belts, and I like Rick's better. They are made from multipe layers of scuba webbing and is very stiff.

    Happy hunting!

  11. Looking on Shooter's Connection's website:

Stock 140mm mags: $54 (ready to shoot with the tube, basepad, spring, and follower, but you also get the stock capacity which is usually 2-3 less than what you can if you upgrade some parts)

Basepads, such as the Dawson +1 or Dawson SNL: $28.50 each

Followers and springs, such as the Grams 11-coil kit cost $16.90

    Total: $99.40, not including S/H

    http://www.shootersconnectionstore.com/Magazine-and-Magazine-Parts-C314.aspx

Or you can also buy tuned mags with upgraded parts from Brazos, Dawson, or Shooters Connection ranging from $120 to about $150.

  12. My curiosity is how do you shoot USPSA/IDPA/IPSC and justify spending all day setting up, taping targets, sitting around...for a whole 4 minutes of shooting?

Its easy when you compare it to hunting big game or upland birds... I typically measure it in miles walked (or feet in elevation gained) per shot fired. And it's NOT a high shoot factor.

  13. Scores from this weekend's 2012 IDSC Match are posted: http://idahouspsa.com/results.php?match=502 They are also posted on USPSA's website. Congratulations to our top finishers!

A big thanks to everybody that came to Nampa Idaho to shoot! Its been a while since this club has hosted the Section Match, and it was possible thanks to support from the NRGC board to expand our program in the last couple of years, a Friends of the NRA grant that allowed us to build the neccessary additional pits, and a lot of really great volunteers that worked hard to put this match together.

Huge thanks also goes out to TimE as our RM who kept things running smoothly with minimal hiccups.

Lastly, please take a moment to thank our sponsors:

  14. I can confirm that the MGM Switchview intended for the DMS Millett works on the Burris MTac. I did have one problem though, the screws are a tad too short since the diameter of the MTac is a hair bigger than the Millett. One solution is to get longer screws from a screw shop, or the other option (the one I did) was to countersink the screw holes slightly.

  15. Two of mine are Dawson-tuned tubes with Dawson basepads but I replaced the guts with Grams follower and 11-coil springs. My other two are stock STI mag tubes with Dawson basepads and Grams guts. I get 20 reloadable in all four.

Here's the crazy part: On three of them, using the Dawson SNL basepad the mags fit the EGW mag gauge. But on one of them (a non-tuned mag tube) the SNL basepad is too long for the gauge so I run a Dawson +1.

  16. +1 for Rick at COM. I use his "race" holster for Limited, and have new one on order for a 6" that needed to be a custom build since it uses a STI Tactical Frame. I know at least one guy who uses the COM in 3-gun with his Open gun, and has nothing but good to say about it. Rick is good people, unfortunately his website doesn't do him justice. However, I think his Facebook page has better pics. Best to give him a call. Plus he is often a sponsor at major matches.

  17. Hi. I'm the MD that Tim is referring to, and my day job has been keeping me kinda sorta busy lately. Just got home after 21 days in fact.

Today I finalized registration, awards, stages etc... and sent everything off to NROI and various vendors. Last year I was on a fire 10 days prior to MD-ing the 2011 A1MG (on A fire, not ON fire...) and I figured that this year would be similar so I set the deadlines early enough to give myself a cushion to get everything ready for the match. So I appreciate your patience and understanding in this as I juggle work and fun/work at the same time. Oh, and my lawn needs mowing really bad after being gone for a while...

That said, we still have room in the match for another 15 people or so. If you (or others) would still like to shoot the match, we can accommodate that. Its just that the award count will be based on the registration as of Aug 24 (divisions, classes, and categories).

Registration info is posted on the www.idahoUSPSA.com website. Last day for cancellation with full refund is Sept 1.

BTW, provided NROI has no issues with the stages we turned in, the minimum round count will be 260 over 9 stages plus a classifier. We're hoping everyone will find the stages fun/challenging, and not cuss us too much for being devious.

  18. My preference is to shoot a 2011 in 3-gun, and I voted for the "drop mag and completely empty pistol". I think my thumb instinctively flips the safety on anyway (or at least it always tries to engage the non-existent thumb safety whenever I shoot my Glocks) and to my knowledge I've never had the safety swept off from carpet. However, at my skill level in 3-gun I'm not going to set any records, so the extra time it takes to unload beats heck out of being DQ'd in my opinion. Quite often it seems that I have to take a few steps to get to the dump box, so I'm clearing the gun enroute (but depends on the stage).

I worried over what design to use for pistol dump boxes when we were prepping for A1MG last year, and ended up making dump boxes out of 10 qt plastic wastebins with a couple of 2x4 blocks screwed into the front half of the bin's bottom to form a ledge for the grip to sit on. The barrel went all the way to the bottom of the bin. Seemed to work, and to my knowledge we didn't have any issues. I deliberately avoided carpet in the dump boxes, but could concede that maybe some cardboard as a liner in the dump box may have been a nice touch.
